The Big East Coast Snowstorm

Mon Dec 21, 2009 5:39 am

It was declared a blizzard here on Long Island. I am from Ronkonkoma (which is located in central Suffolk County) and we got about 25 and a half inches of snow from this storm. It took me 3 hours today to clean my car and shovel out of my driveway. Luckily the snow was pretty light and fluffy.

Call me crazy but I've always wanted to experience a genuine winter inferno. I've lived in the dessert my whole life and while I have seen snowfall it's never been more than 5 inches. I think, for one time at least, it would be quite the experience.

Of course you guys that have to put up with it yearly probably hate it with a passion Big grin

You know what else is light and fluffy, is pancakes.

We got about 13" here in CT. I was driving home on Saturday night when the storm caught me and I was shitting bricks. Near whiteout visibility (I could see only about 50 ft ahead). It was kind of like driving in the fog while driving in snow drifts. Other than that, it wasn't too bad.

Nice oxymoron.

Its an experience for sure but in an event like this the best thing to do is to stay inside and watch the show. Trying to get somewhere is a pain and you will be hours late for work even if you plan ahead, in a snowstrom like this you probably won't get called into work unless your job is absolutely essential.

Here in coastal DE, we mainly got rain and flooded everywhere since we still have all the water from that nor'easter that came through. Once it hit freezing, all that water turned to ice and there were areas on the road with up to 6" of ice on the ground, plus the 4-8" of snow that fell during the night as well. But needless to say, its now warm and most of it has melted. Weather on the coastline is so weird

I can at least say I was smart enough to leave school when I did, Morgantown got hit hard with snow.

I feel bad for all those people who were stuck on that train overnight for many hours. Terrible situation just stranded in a blizzard.

Last winter was pretty bad. In mid March our driveway looked similarly. The only difference was that we never received the whole package at once. It was usually around 10-15 cm per snowfall and it accumulated over time.

Calgary has been getting really heavy winter weather this year, and trust me, the past couple of years haven't been that bad (well, 2008 was a toss, but not as bananas as this year):

Nov. 27: Goes from rain to sleet to freezing rain. Roads turn to ice. Fifi (car) nearly gets hit head on by some moron driving in the wrong lane. Cannot get to work due to ice. 12th St. leading to UPS/FedEx hill was just glazed. Abandoned venture and found solace with coffee and donuts at Tim's near Canada Post building.

Dec. 3-5: Winter storm warning posted on the 4th. By 12:00PM, the city was white. By 4:00PM, visibility was down to 1/4 mile. Abandoned venture to go to work due to low visibility. UPS operations (ground and 5X jet) suspended; snow day issued. Numerous cups of coffee and donuts consumed trying to dig car out of snow-bank by 9:00PM. Calgary Transit suspended at 2:30PM roughly, snow shuts city down for 2 days (Dec. 4 and 5).

Now: snow, snow and more snow. We're used to it up here, but December 4 was the taker of the cake. It is...something. Looks like a white Christmas this year. I hate YYC and I hate winter. BAH HUMBUG.

Ya know, I spoke to Gemuser about this already; this is becoming a matter of national insubordination down there.

For you see, it is December, and December means winter yes winter. Therefore, you are required to don furry hats and colorful woolen scarves and consume hot yes hot apple cider (or the cocoa, if you like the cocoa; Starbucks used to sell a peppermint-type cocoa for the 'olidays but this year it seems only Peet's Coffee & Tea is offering that; in any case the bonus thing about cider is that it can be served with a delicious and festive cimmanom stick).

Sheesh. Freakin Aussies....gettin the seasons all mixed up...

Wish I was in Aussie-land, frying some shrimp on the barbie in my Bermuda shorts, tanning my washboard self and gawking at the hot women y'all got down there...

You guys are lucky. Wish I could have Christmas on the beach!

US and Europe get batter and us Irish in the middle and the snow is dancing around us, not as much as a snowflake here.
