Help! What To Do In Orlando

Wed Dec 23, 2009 3:33 pm

You all have been so helpful in the past, so I post another question for help.

My brother (age 25) and I (age 22) will be spending nearly 8 hours in Orlando this weekend. We are coming off a cruise at Port Canaveral, traveling with the family to MCO and then picking up a rental car.

We should get in the car about 11am, and have to return about 7pm for our flight. So my question ... what should we do?

I was thinking about at least an airboat ride in the Everglades. Anyone have company recommendations?

Either way, that would be really short. The amusement parks would be too crowded this weekend so what else can you recommend? We want to make the most of our short time in Orlando. Cape Canaveral? Anything?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide. Happy holidays.

Brian

Definitely doable. The road you'd take (SR528 i think) goes directly from the airport to the Cape. You could do a whirlwind tour of the Visitor Center and maybe a quick facility tour.

One thing to note is that you'll want to be back early. Some of the rental facilities (I use Hertz) are off-airport and it takes awhile to get to the terminal. And the security line was long last time I was there (a few weeks ago). I allowed myself an hour and a half and damn near missed the plane.

Also, don't fuel up your car right there near the airport--there are gas stations charging upwards of $5/gal to hapless travelers.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your vacation!

We went with A-Awesome airboats. They operate from a public slip about 2/3 of the way from Orlando to Titusville on the 50.

Well if you enjoy shopping, I would deffinatley hit up the Mall at Mellinia its about a 40 minute drive from MCO right of of I-4 on Conroy road. It's a great mall with any store you can imagine with great food choices.

Other than that, their really is not too much to do in Orlando as the parks require a lot of time.

Well Orlando is not near the Everglades but I am sure there are some swamp lands. Orlando is filled with tourist traps so just search online for something to do. The drive to the cape is a bit long and really I would not want to take the chance of a bad accident on the way back making you miss your flight because traffic can get bad in the area.

There is some great helicopter tour companies around the area. They will take you through the various disney parks for a good rate. Also there is several great places to eat. I dont no if i would attempt a park visit on that time frame. You will spend 2 hours of that time in traffic at least.

The absolute best thing to do in Orlando is leave.

My best suggestion, since you're only there 8 hours, is do some of the stuff at Disney. Going to a park would probably be a waste, but at Downtown Disney (free parking there), there's Disney Quest, which is a giant arcade (three or four stories), with more than just your typical arcade games. A good way to kill a few hours. All games are unlimited play. You only pay once, when you enter. There's also shopping at Downtown Disney. Another option is going to one of the Disney hotels just to eat. My personal recommendation would be the Ohana at the Polynesian. Park at Downtown Disney. Catch a bus to the Polynesian. Call to see about if and when a reservation is available. Downtown Disney has several good restaurants. I would recommend Ragland Road (Irish Tavern) and then Ghirardelli for an ice cream sundae for dessert. Also at Disney, there is the "Wide World of Sports". I believe the Wide World of Sports is free (but I wouldn't swear to that), but the parking there at the WWS is free.

If you do decide to go to the Disney area. IGNORE THE SIGNS FROM THE AIRPORT ON HOW TO GET THERE. When leaving the airport, follow 528 West and then take I-4 West. DO NOT take 417. This route is both A) longer and B) more expensive but it's how they tell those heading to Disney from MCO to get there. All part of the Florida Tollway Scam System.

Downtown Disney

Thats a great idea, I also reccomend this. And parking is free many shops and places to eat. Its nothing amazing but its a nice place to spend a few hours.

- As mentioned The Everglades are at least two hours south of Orlando, might not be worth the drive. You could go north and see what is happening around JFK Space Center.

Don't try spotting at MCO - we have the worst police in the world

Everglades is a 3-4 hour drive from MCO. There are Airboat companies just 10 minutes south of the airport on Lake Topo.

SR 528/Beachline takes you to another road 418 or something (there will be signs), that will take you to another road that takes you directly to the Space Center - overall about a 30 minute trip

Cape Canaveral is a fair way if you count in travelling time both ways. You'd probably end up with 3 1/2 hours max there, and for what you pay (as I remember, it is rather expensive, I've been myself), you won't be getting the best bang for your buck. Personally, I'd just stay in the Orlando area, do some window shopping and have a long lunch. The airport to the city centre is about a 30 minute drive, and you don't really want to cut it fine for obvious reasons.

The Rainbow Cafe in Downtown Disney is an awesome place to eat, but IIRC it is kind of expensive and the portions are huge (and I say that as a 6 time visitor to the US, and I've seen some big meals!  Silly).
