(Rant) 24 Hours Of "A Christmas Story"

Fri Dec 25, 2009 2:02 am

Does anybody actually watch this movie? Every year, TBS runs this Movie, starting on Christmas Eve and continuing through Christmas day. The event is called "24 hours of A Christmas Story". Personally, I think showing this movie once or twice would be fine. I scrolled through to next day and counted that they will replay this movie 11 times, in total, they will play this Movie 12 times, starting at 8pm est, tonight and ending 8pm est, tomorrow night. The movie lasts for 2 hours.

There has to be a reason why they do this even every year, could it be high ratings? Because I find it hard to believe that anyone could watch this movie more than once or even twice, in a 24 hr span.

P.S. Despite the fact that they do this event every year, I have never watched this movie in it's entirety because it looks so ridiculously boring. Should I watch the full movie at some point?

I love that movie! I watch it every year, but only once. Luckily I don't watch TV much, so it's kinda like having it on demand without it interfering with my daily life.

you should! it's hilarious, IMO one of the best Christmas movies ever made. I do admit though, the first time you watch it, you're out of control laughing, but the humor wears off the more times you watch it, but i'd still say it's my favorite holiday movie.

Yes, you should watch it; if for no other reason than to see what all the hype is about...

This is just a shot in the dark, but it may have to do something with minimal staff present on Christmas eve and day. By putting the movie on repeat, they probably won't need many people taking care of different things (e.g. like making up a playlist for mp3s, so that you don't have to sit there to change to next song etc.). Add into that the ad revenue, ratings etc. and you kill two birds with one stone.

...but I could be totally off  Silly

I like it, its a tradition for me to be watching it. I wont watch it all the time but when I am on the computer or something its something nice to have on the tv. Its a pretty decent movie too. A lot better then all that other holiday garbage.

I, for one, think the movie is terrific. It's one of those classics that gets even funnier the more you watch it. I have memorized just about all the good lines and know exactly what will happen in each scene, but for me that just makes it all the better.

That said, I don't watch it more than once a year. It just became a family tradition long enough ago that I've grown to love it.

I even went on the IMDB quotes database tonight and had a good laugh reading them to myself.

As the number of TV channels has grown - the supply of available 'special' progamming gets spread more thinly.

Yes it is a marketing gimmic.

One of the problems with holiday scheduling is that you can please almost no one because what every time slot the 'classic' runs - some people complaing about missing the movie.

Lots of complaints to NBC about "It's A Wonderful Life" only available at a time to interfere with church or family plans.

So running the movie repeatedly for 24 hours makes sure everyone has an opportunity.

Plus ratings are terrible anyway for the holiday - so don't bother with anything new or unique.

I love the movie, and watch it every year. With it on 24 hours straight, I usually end up leaving it on in the background, catching scenes here and there as I go about my holiday activities, but I'll end up watching it all the way through at least once.

And if you're not interested in watching it, I have a tip for you - these days, most TV sets come with a method for changing to a different channel, so you don't need to watch it all day if you don't want to... Big grin

Actually Flicks real name is Scott Schwartz. Not to be confused with "Schwartz" the charactor in the movie. Supposedly he worked in the adult movie biz for a short time but gave it up because he didn't like it...How can you not like it???

Who's forcing you to watch it? Go outside, read a book, make a gingerbread house. Do something other than sit in front of the TV all day.

Exactly. I wish I didn't have to work outside in frigid temperatures on Christmas eve/ day. If I was forced to watch all 24 hours of it I would have no problem with it. There are other things to do. If sitting in front of the TV is all you have to do, there are other channels.
By reading through the thread I'm seeing there's more people who watch it than those who don't. Sometimes I'll sit and watch it in one setting. Sometimes I'll take in parts here and there. I think they show 24 hours of it because people have different schedules around Christmas day so it allows a lot more people to watch it. I think its great!

Unlikely...it's not like there's someone there switching out tapes. Most television is run automated anyway -- either server-based playback or automatic control of decks or some hybrid of the two and these "playlists" are configured well in advance of actual airing.

I'd venture that it's no more (and no less) work to add 12 entries for A Christmas Story plus the attendant advertising slots than it would be to plop in 24 hours of any other programming.

There still needs to be some level of staff on hand / on call in the event of technical difficulties regardless of what the content on air is.

Also note that Turner Broadcassting System, Inc. (parent to the channel known as TBS) also owns CNN, Headline News, TNT, Cartoon Network/Adult Swim, Boomerang, TruTV, and TCM -- most likely several [if not all] of these are programmed, originated, and monitored from the same facility (and frequently with the same staff) as TBS meaning even less of a real reduction in overhead.

All that being said... since A Christmas Story was shot largely here in Cleveland, I've made a few efforts to watch the movie since moving here and I never make it more than about 5 minutes without the thing annoying the crap out of me. (It probably doesn't help that the "A Christmas Story House" is a tourist attraction and one of the local theaters, The Cleveland Play House, has made a tradition of putting the thing on stage every year)

Both a "Christmas Story" and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" have become classic movies that represent Americana so well that, if you dont see any aspect of your family represented in these movies...then you simply are not American.

Beyond these two movies, football, and the occasional Discovery/History channel thing...I see no reason to even turn on my TV with the crap that is out there these days. I have 800 channels of crap.

Why is it a surprise to some folk that all the world, including TV programming, does not revolve around them?
A large percentage of people enjoy a show. A network plays the show. Why is this a source for angst for the teenage mind? Find a real issue to concern yourself with!

Why?
From wiki:

Based on 43 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an overall approval rating from critics of 88%, with an average score of 8.3/10.

On December 24, 2007, AOL ranked the film their #1 Christmas movie of all time. IGN ranked the film the top holiday-themed movie of all time.

Television
The film first aired on television on HBO during the mid-eighties and quickly attracted a growing following. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the film began airing quietly on SuperStation WTBS and Superstation WGN. From 1988-1992, the film had a short-lived tradition of airing on the American Thanksgiving night (or the night after Thanksgiving) to open the holiday television season. In 1988, then-fledgling FOX aired the movie the night after Thanksgiving. In 1989-1990, TBS showed it Thanksgiving night, while in 1991-1992, they aired it the night after.

Turner Broadcasting, now a part of the TimeWarner umbrella of cable networks, has maintained ownership of the broadcast rights, and since the mid-1990s, airing the movie increasingly on TBS, TNT and TCM. By 1995, it was aired on those networks a combined six times over December 24-25-26, and in 1996, it was aired eight times over those three days.

Due to the increasing popularity of the film, in 1997 TNT began airing a 24-hour marathon dubbed "24 Hours of A Christmas Story," consisting of the film shown twelve consecutive times beginning at 7 or 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve and ending Christmas Day. This was in addition to various other airings earlier in the month of December. In 2004, after TNT switched to a predominantly drama format, sister network TBS, under its comedy-based "Very Funny" moniker, took over the marathon. Clark stated that in 2002, an estimated 38.4 million people tuned into the marathon at one point or another, nearly one sixth of the country. TBS reported 45.4 million viewers in 2005, and 45.5 million in 2006. In 2007, new all-time ratings records were set, with the highest single showing (8 p.m. Christmas Eve) drawing 4.4 million viewers. Viewership increased again in 2008, with 8 p.m. Christmas Eve drawing 4.5 million viewers, and 10 p.m. drawing 4.3 million.

I watched most of it on Christmas Eve. It is a fun film to watch. The narrator of the film, Gene Shepard was a popular writer and storyteller on NPR and syndicated on other radio stations in the 1960's and 70's, using the experiences of his own life. It is set in a simpler time, about 1939-1940, just before the horrors of WWII. It shows the problems of growing up, from dealing with bulliies, dealing with parents, friends and younger brothers, wanting that special gift and the end the real love between a child and their parents. It also kinda goes after the commercialization of Christmas as well as a moral comment on sometimes what you think you want isn't always the best. It is a great way to show normal family life of the time, that it isn't always perfect. The father that curses colorfuly at the cranky furnace, the pack of dogs next door, and other things just add to the story's reality. Funny - what about how the hounds from next door steal the turkey and the family ends up at a Chinese resturant for Christmas dinner? It is a fun film and guaranteed to make you smile. More power to TBS to show it 24 hours to allow many to see it instead of some crummy, adult themed comedy.

The movie is part of my family's Christmas tradition. We watch it once a year sometime during the season, and then we put it on in the background Christmas morning while opening gifts. It provides great background entertainment on Christmas day.

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation is another tradition in my family. Watch it every year on Christmas Eve.

Bad Santa was also looped all day yesterday. Another family favorite! Lol
