Couple Replaces Wedding Cake With A...Giant Tuna?

Mon Dec 28, 2009 7:38 am

http://www.slashfood.com/2009/12/23/...ces-wedding-cake-with-tuna-fish%2F

"A company in Japan is taking the traditional wedding cake in a very different direction, replacing it with a giant tuna.

In a video on YouTube a Japanese couple cuts a 100 kilogram -- or about 220 pound -- BigEye tuna with a very large knife at their wedding reception, JapanProbe.com reports.

The company has been offering the tuna-cutting wedding ceremonies for about 10 years, Japan Probe reports. A minimum plan costs about 300 yen per person based on 50 guests, which works out to about 150,000 yen or $1,600."

Suuuuuuuuuuuuugoooiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! Most people go to weddings because of cake, but who would've thought about replacing a wedding cake into a giant tuna fish. Well, at least it's healthier then a cake. What's funny is the people's reaction from the video. The Japanese do have a sense of humor. Thoughts? Any stories?

This is Japan we're talking about. At least for the weddings and nijikais I've been to, they're not replacing a "wedding cake" with a tuna, but rather a big, inedible mock up of a wedding cake, with something that's actually real and edible.

Seriously, why even bother with cutting of the big fake wedding cake?

Really? lol most of the time the cake isn't very nice (traditional fruit one) and I've never eaten it. It'd have to be cut before dinner too but sashimi as a starter would be really nice! I don't see why one would replace a relatively expensive cake with an expensive fish though! Why not have both then?

It's a first for me. I'm used to the traditional wedding cakes at wedding ceremonies. Apparently, this was in Yokosuka, and hey, it sounds like a good idea. I wonder if that company have any giant salmon for my wedding.

Maybe the next wacky idea would to be to transport a tanker of water to the wedding reception and to get the bride and groom fish it out - therefore you have fresh fish! Mmm, salmon sounds really nice right now! Nigiri, especially.

The happy couples don't even appear to be cutting the Tuna... More like scratching....

Yum! Sushi! That tuna flesh looked delectable! Pink, fresh, firm...put that in a nice roll and make some makki out of it!

Japanese customs may appear a bit odd to Western sensibilities, but they've got one of the best cuisines in the world!

Man, you would love the rural weddings in the old country! No bar at all, bottles of booze right in front of you at the table. And they keep replenishing...  drunk
