What Was Your Best/worst Buy Of 2009

Fri Jan 01, 2010 2:50 am

What was the best thing you brought in 2009? Maybe it was something you got for a very good price; or something you purchased that you haven't stopped using since you brought it.

Sometimes you buy something that was a complete dud.  Sad

Best. Apple Iphone; can't live without it.  veryhappy

Worst. Some clothes; trousers that faded after 1 month; and a $10 clothes iron; do not buy one that cheap completely useless.

Maybe you brought some flights or paid for something that wasn't an item which left you with some good memories of 2009.

My $1600 self-built nuclear bomb of a computer, and Windows 7 Pro for $30 Big grin

Worse, eh, can't think of any, but the most painful was my most expensive ($300), most gorgeous, best flying, and largest R/C airplane that only lasted 3 flights due to catastrophic structural failure  cry

Best- "The Hangover" on DVD, a headset for my PC to use voice on VATSIM, a blazer that fits me perfectly for $2 at Salvation Army.

Worst- a shirt I bought for my dad at Forever 21 that cost $25 and turned out didn't fit him. And some noice-cancelling headphones that stopped working after 2 months. Luckily those were only $20- no huge loss.

Best:

Worst, either an Archer Farms Cob Salad from Target, or a Mr. and Mrs. T's bloody mary mix. One of the two gave me food poisoning. Diarrhea and Vomit like crazy + hospital visit.

Best: iPod Touch 30GB

Worst: Small 2GB Mp3 player that looks like a clip-on iPod shuffle. I figured I'd leave it in the car so I don't have to worry about taking my iPod in/out. I kept leaving the thing on and forgetting to put the song(s) I wanted on it since it was always in the car. Used it for 3 days and shelved it.

Best Buy; My Trip to Singapore and Thailand including the Qantas A380, Business Class on Cathay's 777-300ER and First Class on the Thai 747-400; not to mention the numerous beaches, the tan I picked up, swimming with the fish. Bliss.

Worst Buy; Probably a kebab that gave me really bad food poising the first weekend in December  Sad

JG  Yeah sure
First Class passengers are my favourites. They can't get any further forward without an ATPL.

Best: A brand-new Nikon 180mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF lens. $900 new, but $360 for me thanks to Circuit City's liquidation sale.

Worst: Every single penny I've ever spent on AT&T wireless "service". This month will be the last month I'm with them. Coverage at home has inexplicably disappeared. I drove 80 miles on I-94 in Michigan with "No Service". And then I drove from the south side of Chicago....through Chicago....and up through (and past) Milwaukee with "No Service" the entire time.

AT&T's network has proven to be completely nonfunctional, even after switching to a new phone and SIM card. I can't wait to leave.

Best buy- Ted Baker shirt in the sales reduced from £100 to £32!

Worst buy- toss up between dinner at Jamie Oliver's restaurant (took ages to get served then my food was cold) or my mobile, £50 on a mobile phone that is way worse than my old one.

Best Buy - 40g aquarium with a glass hood and light strip ... regular price $160, Boxing Day price $135 ... my price due to PetSmart mixing the up the sale price with the savings ... $25  Big grin

Worst Buy - $337 in text messaging over the summer with various members of the opposite sex met online in a desperate attempt to start dating again ... what was I thinking?  Silly

2008 Malibu LS

Best buy of the year (see above) - got a great price by buying the car from a extremely "financially distressed" seller.....

Worst buy of the year - the outrageous Southern California Edison electric bills over the summer thanks to running the air conditioner in my home.....

Happy 2010 to all of you!

The structure failed to withstand you catastrophically flying it into the ground, was it? Big grin  duck

Best buy: a pair of North Face hiking boots that cost me $60 at a store in downtown Boston that weirdly enough was not a sporting goods store (those were, in fact, the only hiking boots they had). Saved my ass in really wet and muddy circumstances in New Hampshire, Alaska and Maine over the summer, I can stand ankle-deep in mud in those things and my socks will remain clean (and dry) as a whistle.

Worst buy: a 3-night layover in Tahiti on my way back from New Zealand in January (ok, it was purchased in 2008 but "enjoyed" in 2009). Never thought a tropical "paradise" could suck so much - rude people, dirty surroundings, sketchy environment, overpriced hotel crap.

My best buy of 2009 was the purchase of my new car - 2003 Renault. Got it for a steal. Replaces my old 1990 Pulsar.

I dont know if I had a worst buy, apart from dinner at Foodstar, cause I couldn't afford anything else as a student.  Smile

Best - a pair of Oliver Peoples Aero sunglasses that I got on sale for $225.00 (normally $450).

Worst - the services of a plumbing company that charged $100.00 to find a pipe leak they subsequently provided me with an estimate of over $1500.00 to fix. Flew in my brother-in-law (who happens to be a licensed plumber) from DEN to fix it, and the repair not only was far less invasive than the previous plumber recommended, it also wouldn't have cost anything over $500.00, let alone $1500.00

Best - Tie between several dirt cheap mileage runs to Europe that got me to 1K on United and the laptop I finally bought after a year or so of not having one. Acer Aspire Timeline with 8-9 hour battery life and ultra-sleek profile, while actually being a real computer and not a netbook. I even negotiated a $50 discount at Fry's, bringing the total to $599.

Worst - Not sure. Probably various instances where I wasted a little bit of money and it added up to a ton.

My best buy of 2009:

^^Specimen of the boarding passes I hope to get when I embark on my trip to Germany this February.

Since the e-ticket was bought in December, it counts as a buy of 2009 even though the trip is in February. I just hope my e-ticket will be in the system, as I'm constantly nervous about using an e-ticket (or basically just the confirmation code of my ticket in the itinerary I got). It's my first time flying alone AND on an e-ticket, 12 years ago paper tickets were still the norm and e-tickets were basically unknown to most of the public. Maybe in time I'll get used to it.

My worst buy of 2009:

Probably a sandwich I ate at Quiznos a few months ago. They're usually good, but that time, the roast beef simply made me gag.

Best: Apple iPhone (resisted it for the longest time, didn't want to be a sheep, but adore the thing now), Panasonic Lumix TZ7 camera, trip to Alaska (oh Alaska, how I miss you).

Worst: not sure, although I did buy various CDs throughout the year that I've listened to once and then promptly forgotten.

The wife & I taking the grandkids to Branson/SIlver Dollar City for a few days. Twice!

A new iPhone 3GS and a new 13" MacBook Pro. (The wife got the MBA)

Medicare Supplement policies for the wife & I.

Worst?

After spending money on the above I didn't have much money for bad buys.  Sad

Best: My fiance and I bought a house in Olathe, Kansas. I gave up my fight to move back to Windhoek for at least the time being  Wink

Worst: Cannot really think of anything specific. Some clothes weren't that great, but I am pretty picky and cheap with my money so I don't buy much without heavy research and "sleeping on it", which cuts down the chances of getting something crappy.

Best: Switching cell phone services from Verizon to Page Plus Unlimited for 39.95 per month.Page Plus is not a 3G network yet,but text and calling is all I need.Saving tons of money.

Also,Sony Blue Ray that was on sale. What made this a great buy was I found a dealer friend who sold discs at cost.

Worst: Software program:Viruses seem to love Norton Security by disabling it or being deceptive about "real" hard drive conditions.CPU crashed 3 times and I reformatted three times and find out that Norton was the problem.Switched to Trend Mirco and hard drive came back fine and no further attacks.

Best buy;

My car and paint job.
Took 20 years to find this. I've had sveral 1977 Lincoln Town Cars in the past but I've always wanted one in black with the rare wide-fixed glass option. Less than 1000 were made that year. Finding one in black is even more difficult. Glad this car was fully loaded with the 460cu" engine, automatic headlights and of course the quadraphonic 8track deck.
Even has the original factory CB radio and external P.A. speaker mounted behind the grille.
I owe a very special thanks to KevinL1011 and Falstaff for help in getting the car up & running again.
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj96/Rush8track/SFOtrip021.jpg

Worst buy;
A 6-pack of Stella Artois beer.
I love all beer an I like most imported beers too. Stella Artois however is the most overrated, wimpiest, snob beer ever!
Stella Artois has no flavor and no kick.
Yet Americans pay a premium for this crap because 'it's from Europe'.  banghead

Best:
Splurged on skates for reffing hockey this year. Dropped $450 on a pair of RBK's, which was night and day to the $140 CCM's I had previously (was only using them for recreation, but then picked up hockey again)

Extra $25 spent to upgrade to a king suite in Banff on my return to YYJ.

Worst:
Commuting between YYC and YYJ. Towing was really fun, and intersting to work at a big airport, but the whole two months were a disorginized mess and I hated the city. Glad to be back in YYJ.

$$ spent getting the car ready for Alberta winter, only to not need it.

My best buy this year: Wedding expenses including our honeymoon for the week after our wedding, which is later this year:

two AA tickets from PHL to AUA via MIA for about $1,060.
a time share at the Marriott Aruba Surf Club.
D.J. and Videographer.
My fiancee's engagement ring
Blue topaz earings to go with her ring
Everything else we paid for our wedding up until yesterday...

On top of that, 3 nights at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Downtown Pittsburgh over Christmas. A late snack at the Tap Room at the William Penn Hotel. Sunday Brunch at the William Penn Hotel as we checked out.

Worst buy... hmm...
Oh, a cheap humidifier we bought the other day and exchanged for something better. The damned thing didn't work right and it leaked.
Do not bring stranger girt into your room. The stranger girt is dangerous, it will hurt your life.

Down here all imports cost more, even if it's cheap piss-water beer. That is partially why many American people think all European beers are better. Put a high price on a product and people will be fooled that they're getting a good product.
Europe does have some awesome beers but Stella Artois is not one of them.  no

I've tried it, at least Paulaner. To me, it had a borderline fruity taste. That being said, if you want REAL beer, you should try an Astra the next time you come to Hamburg:

Thanks.
It's a one-way mirror glass top in shape of the roofline.
On the outside, you only see your reflection but on the inside, you can see out. It is tinted glass. Much like the mirrors in a woman's dressing room at a department store.
I can see straight up and look at skyscrapers, aircraft, tall redwood trees even when it's snowing or pouring rain. It does not open but there is a shade inside that I can open & close.

Wow, that's great. I had no idea such an option even existed. That car must be a blast.

Yes it's very rare. It was only available between 1977-1979 and less than 2000 were made in those 3 model years. Mercury was the first to offer this on the 1954 Sun Valley. They weren't popular because I don't think they had an interior shade. People would bake inside of those things especially since the seats were only in vinyl and air conditioning wasn't standard on those models in the 1950s.
The new Mustang is now offering that feature again today.

And these PlanToys people make all sorts of related buildings and centers (train station, airport, police station...) I want to get him the whole city's worth!!!

Some of my best buys of this past year in no particular order:
1.
Takes the stinky out of the stinky box (litter pan)
2.
Paid for itself many times over; so far this has been a cold winter and my apartment's heating system only profits BGE.
3. Winter boots
4.
Especially in the "Complete Formula" make my generic el cheapo GE dishwasher clean like one of those fancy machines costing 4 figures (apartment dishwasher)
I'll think of more

Worst buy of 2009:

Signed up for one month of Thai dating online. The site was first rate and quite easy to navigate and there are some smoking hot Asian girls but, with a lot of International dating there is that trap of scammers trying to dupe you into sending Western Union money orders. These scammers use pictures of young hotties to try to separate you from your hard earned money. You connect with someone you think is your soulmate and all is honkey dorey until they start mentioning "you need to sponsor me, pay a travel agency, for visas and papers. You do this by sending a Western Union Money Order. You send $440 USD...." Watch out folks the only thing you'll get to screw is a pillow as you bite it. BTW, I did not fall for this B.S.

Best: plane tickets to Barcelona! Had a fantastic time, drove up to Pamplona and ran with the bulls, partied several nights in BCN, went home with a fantastic hangover!

Worst: a Nautica winter coat at Century 21, two of the three buttons fell off in a week!

Worst buy;
A 6-pack of Stella Artois beer.

I like Stella on tap, but in cans it's crap.

I do agree with you on the general point about Americans buying into the whole Eurobeer thing, although Newcastle Brown is the ambrosia of the gods. I've never understood why ANYONE would buy Heineken in the US. Watered down crap. It's basically EuroBud. Coors Light has as much flavor, and is better on the golf course on a hot day. Yet Americans buy it by the boatload.

I've tried it, at least Paulaner. To me, it had a borderline fruity taste. That being said, if you want REAL beer, you should try an Astra the next time you come to Hamburg:

Was there a beer in that picture? I didn't notice...  Silly

There were about 27 bottles of beer in that case (because that's a standard Astra-Kasten, which by default contains 27 bottles).  Wink

Yuck, Hefeweizen?!?!?!

On a hot summer day, there isn't anything more refreshing  Wink

Quoting Superfly (Reply 35):
I like imperial stouts, stouts, porters, barley wines, ales, IPAs and of course lagers.

I'm a dark beer person myself, I love ales, stouts and porters. There's a couple of brewpubs around here that have some extremely well brewed and flavourful porters for their autumn/winter seasonal batches ..... paired up with a good shepards pie or a homemade angus beef bacon and cheddar burger .... heaven  Smile

Quoting Superfly (Reply 35):
Europe does have some awesome beers but Stella Artois is not one of them.

Being German, I'll agree that there are alot of great European beers out there and I do find Stella to be one of the better mass produced ones. Oh well, I guess that just means more for me  Wink Big grin

I actually would rather have a Budweiser on a hot summer day instead of Stella Artois.
As a beer aficionado that has been to 25 countries around the world, I'll acknowledge the American macrobrew Budweiser does have it's place. On a hot summer day, especially after a long workout/bike ride or helping someone move, a Budweiser hits the spot. Especially in a 12oz. glass bottle.

You've described the meal I had at the Kildare House in Windsor, Ontario last spring with Falstaff.  Smile
