Show Us Your Postal Code! -Brits & Canucks Speshly

Sun Jan 03, 2010 7:01 am

It was kinda interesting to see people post their National Health cards. I would have loved to see how the numbering systems work (tho obviously I wouldn't ask folks to divulge theirs).

TQ apparently means Torquay in the British postal service's scheme of things.

NB means New Brunswick to Canada Post.

In the US, the ZIP code is preceeded by a digraph that denotes the state (AZ for Arizone, NE for Nebraska, UT for Utah...) But the letters "B" and "Q" are the only two that do not appear in any of these digraphs.

I have been to New Brunswick (where is the old Brunswick?) but not to Torquay.

If your country uses an alphanumeric postcode system, then I declare our countries allies.

I will start, despite my country's insistence on a rigidly logical all-numeric system:

San Leandro, California 94577

(even though I live closer to the "Estudillo" post office)

Neutral Bay, Australia 2089.

[As an interesting aside; the name was given to the bay in Sydney Harbour that was used to anchor non-British ships from countries that the Empire was not at war with. It's biggest users were Americans, particularly whalers.]

Actually, the digraph is not necessary. The ZIP code is all that is needed to find the city and state. Indeed, for single family homes, all you would need to write is the ZIP plus 4 and they would get you your mail without issue. That said, the USPS prefers that the state be written as the digraph, instead of written out or using one of the older abbreviations. For example, California used to normally be abbreviated Calif., whereas it is now CA.

Anyway, I digress.

Camarillo, California (CA) 93012

Mine is WA (Warrington, the main area) 7 (Town, Runcorn in my case) 4 (Postcode sector) EG (Postcode unit).

So mine is WA7 4EG. I don't really care, you don't know my house number Big grin

You can post a letter in the UK with just for example:

1
WA1 1WA

Each road has it's own postcode as far as I know.

Nagoya, Japan 〒455-0008

Japan has a special character created to denote the post code or serve as a general logo for the postal service. "〒"

DeKalb, IL USA 60115

Calabanga, Cam. Sur, Philippines 4405

Anyway another interesting thing to note would be the standard placement of the post code on one's mailing address.

For example:

Mr. Blah Blah
123456 Street Rd
DeKalb, IL 60115
USA

JAPAN
〒455-0008
Prefecture City Ward District

Mr. Blah Blah
12345 Street Rd, Barangay (Neighborhood)
4405 Province
Philippines

In the Netherlands we use a system with 4 numbers and 2 letters. These 6 digits are a unique identifier on a street level. The 4 numbers identify the area. Usually a city, but it can also be a district depending on the size of the city. The 3 letters identify the street. To give one example; my previous adress had zip code 5213 CR.

If you add the house number to the zip code, then that's all the postal services need to get your letter delivered. Of course everyone still uses the full adress details when sending letters. But some people/companies only list their zip code for as return adress.

Because our system is so detailed, there is even a lottery on zip codes that is quite popular. For security it also helps. A lot of people engrave the zipcode in their bike, if it gets stolen then it can still be identified at the police station, not that they ever find a stolen bike, but that's for another thread.

Here's the English languange site about our zip codes.

But I think you can find it out. When I temporarily "lost" my cousin's house (near Bristol) recently and while the local pub - just about 800 m away - did not know where the street was, they were easily able to work out I had given them the wrong post code, cos it was for the other side of Bristol. They were even able to volunteer what the correct one probably was, and once I had located my cousin's house, I found they were right.

We were transported from 2519 (Fairy Meadow) to 2500 when the exit onto Mt Ousley Rd was blocked off and what is more we then had the choice of living in three different suburbs as far as Aus Post were concerned because all three are 2500.

Just four digits here in Belgium, each city has its own zip. Mine is 4300...

It's five digits in France, the first two are for the department and the three others are for the city.

Yes you are right every single road in the UK has a post code, for instance i live on a loop with five or six small cul de sacs sprouting off it, they have different road names and thus different post codes!

I live in the SL area (short for Slough unfortunately) and my office is in the HP post area which is short for Hemel Hempstead area even though we are in High Wycombe, this HP address extends as near as makes no difference all the way up to the MK area.

Born in Madera, CA 93637

Raised in Temecula, CA 92592 (the same house was 92590 before the city got big enough to warrant pultiple ZIPs)

Went to school/worked at California State University San Marcos, CA 92096 (an example of a "unique" ZIP code -- the area where the university is in is 92069, but the university had a unique ZIP, you could address mail to

Lincoln [My last name]
IITS (my department)
San Marcos, CA 92096-0001

and it would be delivered)

Spent some time in Cleveland, OH 44114, before buying a house in Cleveland Heights, OH 44118.

Something I didn't realize/consider before recently is ZIP codes can span multiple cities -- e.g. my current ZIP, 44118, also covers areas of Cleveland, University Heights, East Cleveland, Shaker Heights, and South Euclid)

It is also possible, IIRC, to identify the state using the first two digits of the ZIP without the state abbreviation.

I'm 99.99% sure each road has it's own post code. It's not done like in the US were a postcode is over a big area. My old house was on one of 6 dead end roads off a main road, and the post codes were WA7 4BF/G/H/I etc depending which one you were on. Mine was WA7 4BL.

Be my guest, and see the crappy area I live in :P For the stalkers out there, punching my name in on a BT residential phone number search wouldn't work either as it's my friends house and they have a different surname to me, so don't try  Wink.

I will be honest, our postcode system is probably better than the US version. I just don't "get" the whole number thing. Saying that, what good is a decent mail network when they're always off striking....

Same with Mauritius , though in some respects it would make life easier as a lot of streets have an official name which appears on what few maps there are but which no-one actually uses , and a local name which is not on the map but is almost universally used . It makes it quite challenging to get or give directions .

About a mile. The majority of the filming locations are close to where I live. It's not actually called The Archer in real life, that's just a fake name, It's actually called the Waterloo pub. If you named an episode, I could walk you to the location in max 20 minutes. It's all filmed locally, even the houses they film are normal people's houses. Johnny and Janet's house is round the corner from where I am right now, as it happens.

That's semi common, and with that people tend to take the more desireable local and use that as their city when addressing mail vs. the city their house physically lies in. For example my old boss had a house in Syracuse, NY but the zip and post office is in DeWitt... the more desireable locale.... so people would address DeWitt instead of Syracuse.

My old postcode was KA18 4AR, however a few months ago I moved a handful of miles down the road (to the next villiage in fact!) but since my new abode is in a different local government area my postcode has completely changed and is now DG4 6SU.

The downside is I now live even closer to GKirk. Sad

That's not totally, strictly true. There are boarder towns/localities in one state which receive their mail from a post office/mail centre in another state which have postcodes of the post office state. AFAIK they are all very small towns or unincorporated areas. I used to have a list, but haven't seen one in many many years.

When I lived in London, 2004-2007, to study at King's College London, I lived at a University of London hall of residence (International Hall) on Lansdowne Terrace.

My hall's postal code was WC1N 1DJ.

I attended the KCL campus at Guy's Hospital (near London Bridge), which has several postcodes: SE1 1UL (for New Hunt's House) and SE1 9RT (Guy's Hospital Tower).

Now, I live in San Francisco.

I live at UCSF Mission Bay campus, whose zip code is 94158.

The UCSF Parnassus Avenue (main) campus is at zip code 94143.

My lab is at San Francisco General Hospital, zip code 94110.
