Which Is Your Favourite City In The World?

Sun Jan 03, 2010 7:53 pm

I haven't visited the whole world, unfortunately, but I think there's one city I like more than the others.
Although in general I don't particularly like the UK I think my favourite city in the world is

LONDON

Absolutely astonishing from all the point of views, it's classic, modern, full of parks, people are polite. It's definitely my favourite city, by far. I've already been there about 20 times but I'm always happy when I have to go because I love it!!!

Tie - Sydney NSW, and San Francisco CA (the candidates being drawn only from large cities). Paris (France, not Texas) has gotta be up there too.

Many other enticing and charming places...

...Austin, Texas, Tallahassee, Florida (no, really, it's a great town), New York, NY, Santa Fe NM.

Given the choice, I might never live in a large city, but that's where the money is.

Well I live in Barcelona, which to me is wonderful, nice weather, cosmopolitan, modern, organized, good street life, etc.

I liked Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Zurich, Paris.

My globe-trotting is not nearly as extensive as it is for some of you, but chalk another one up to London for me. I've been to some beautiful places and had some amazing experiences, but I feel as comfortable in London as I do in my home town. To me, it has the excitement, history, and wonder of a huge, world-class city, but can be as quaint and comfortable as a small village. Plus I don't particularly enjoy heat and/or sunlight  Wink

As far as places I enjoy in the United States, I'd have to say Charleston, SC is my favorite city--where tea is served correctly, without asking (sweet) and everyone's friendly and downright charming. For a complete opposite experience I do enjoy New York on occasion.

Interesting choice! I've spoken to someone else who's traveled there and feels the same way. I must admit, it's not a place that would pop into my head automatically, but then again, the best places hardly ever are  Smile

Having been raised living in 6 countries on 4 continents and traveled to more than 35 countries, including all 7 continents there is only one place that has ever felt like home: London, England.

New York is great - and I can see myself here for some time. But, if London called I would answer...

For me, it's a toss up between Milan and San Francisco. Both are incredibly beautiful places and it never gets old visiting them. Vegas is comfortably in third place. I love visiting that place even though I don't gamble a whole lot.

Barcelona gets my vote from a tourist point of view:

- great nightlife
- great food (everything you like)
- great weather most of the time
- great football
- easy to reach with many airlines from Germany
- easy and cheap to get around by public transport
- so many things to see and do

Usually I spend the time between Christmas and New Year there, unfortunately it was not possible this time. I hope to be back very soon!

Albuquerque is only considered by me because of all the photography opportunities.

My favorite "big" city if definitely Prague, CZ. But, my favorite place is Dačice, Czech Republic. I love Dačice because it is beautiful, essentially picture perfect, but it has a "lived in" feel. Also, the people there are friendly, warm and welcoming and the food is great (though, I've found thats true pretty much wherever you go in the Czech Republic)

It's so difficult to just pick one, so here are my top 3 at the moment (I am always going to new places, so this may change of course):

Hong Kong
Rome
Washington, DC

I also really love Amsterdam, but now that I am living here as an expat, so that's cheating  Smile

Will see Barcelona and Dubai for the first times in the next couple of weeks; maybe I will be adding one of those to my list soon.

Bangkok, Thailand

I see beauty in all of the congestion and pollution. Magnificent architecture, easy to use public transit that is centuries old such as the canal taxis. Motorcycle taxis, tuk-tuks. Excellent food at bargain prices, friendliest people I've ever met, most of whom practice peaceful Buddhist traditions. It's the most free environment I've seen and a very laidback culture.
It's my kind of city.

Torino, Italy - I've been 3 times and each time it feels like I've come back home. It's so familiar and interesting!

Metro Manila, Philippines - My stays are never long enough, but always look forward to coming back! Manila, Manila, I keep on coming back to Manila! Simply no place like Manila, Manila I'm coming home!!!!!

Buenos Aires, Argentina - If you read my trip report, you'll know why! And the cheap steaks can't be beat!!!!!

Runners up:

Vancouver, Canada
Montreal, Canada
Sydney, Australia
Hong Kong
Dublin, Ireland

But, Paris is my favourite, I've only been there once, by accident at that, but I just fell in love with the city right away and can't wait to visit again.

Don't forget about the absurdly oversized plastic cups of booze.  drunk  I think my favorite is the one shaped like an electric guitar. The fact that you wear it like a guitar makes it all the more over the top. I would never waste the money on something this silly (I draw the line at one of those half-yard glasses.), it's just funny to see folks walking around with these ludicrous containers of booze. I've even seen folks bring them on a flight (empty of course) and have trouble stowing them.

New Orleans and New York for me. I've been to New York quite a few times, and I got to see New Orleans pre-Katrina. That city was loads of fun. I wish I had spent more time in the French Quarter tho. I never had a hand grenade when I was down there. I did have something similar to that when I got home, but it's not the same as having the authentic poison down there...

Apart from my home town of Hamburg, my choices would probably be limited to Rome, Berlin, Nice and Venice. Too bad I was too young to really appreciate most of these cities and the trips we made down there.

Barcelona is one of the cities next on my list, eventually.
