I don't see the point, the traffickers will just tunnel under it. Why don't they just use a portion of their large army to patrol the border instead?

Other than it being a waste of money, I don't see why people would bitch about it.

I don't understand your point in this thread. What exactly do you want to discuss in this thread?

Do walls really work? Should the US use it to stop illegal immigrants from entering the country from Mexico?

I read an article that since they built the last wall there has not been a suicide bomber attack. Not sure if that is true or not and the article was very slanted in Israels direction.

So from their perspective it is very successful.

Perhaps as the thread title states... Israel's decision to build a 1.5b fence along the Egypt border?  confused   cheeky

They haven't completely stopped, but the number has dropped dramatically. Regardless of what people think of that wall, it has saved hundreds if not thousands of lives.

Sadly, the border between Egypt and Israel is abused for bad purposes such as:
1. Drug smuggling into Israel
2. Bedouins together with Israeli panderers smuggle women to work as prostitutes in Israel. Many of the women get raped by he Bedouins during the journey to Israel.
3. Smuggling of weapons into Israel.
4. plans by terrorists to launch a terror attack in Israel threw the cracked border as it is today. There are many warnings regarding a terror attack in the city of Eilat from terrorists crossing the border from Egypt.
5. flooding of refugees that seek for work in Israel.

bear in mind that this is not a Scandinavian border where there are no risks. This is a border in the middle east. The government of Israel didn't decide yet how the border will look. It might have an electronic fence' it might have a wall or maybe a combination of both of them.
I really don't think it should bother any one what measures we take as to defend our border between Egypt and us. Even the Egyptians are building a wall between them and Gaza, A VERY BIG WALL.

WOW, that's deep.

No, they won't. Besides few km of very-easy-to-dig soil around Gaza, the rest is very hard soil and you can't dig with getting caught.

We do but this is not enough. This is a very long and problematic border (Ly001 described many of the problems).

You got to be joking. Right?
In 2002 we had 53 suicide bomber attacks and 26 in 2003 (which killed hundreds of people) In 2009 we had 0 (yes, zero) and that was the first time since Palestinians started to blow up themselves inside Israel in 1994.
The wall has a lot to do with it.

It is interesting that you talk about this one but not about what Egypt is building (which comparing to this, the wall around the West Bank doesn't exist).

Relax. I specifically asked about wallS, not this wall in particular. Walls / fences haven't really worked in the past and they are still being debated in the United States today, hence my question.

I don't understand the tendency for so many users on this site to jump to rapid conclusions and cry foul regarding the post. Firstly, "Another year another wall" is in the OP, and not the thread title. Secondly, - look around you. This is the non-aviation forum. Look at the political posts, look at the debates and arguments. This happens all the time. There is nothing that you should be screaming over.

I'm all for the border. It will help both the Egyptians and the Israelis maintain security in their countries. While I'm sad that Gaza will suffer because of the wall on either side, the tunnels keep providing the Gazans with weapons that are used against everyone, as Ly001 pointed out, among other reasons.
Ideally, I'd like to see borders with both countries AND increased aid shipments to Gaza; in which case the walls would have no negative impact.

I wonder what this will to the price of imports of young females into Israel. Move the trade offshore as it were?

That's what the Americans thought, but apparently the Mexicans still get under it.

There really should be no issues about building a wall along a border. Despite if people think it works or not, to some extent, such a barrier does keep people out. And given the amount of illegal activity going in and out of that border, everyone should be on board here supporting attempts to make the area safer.

IMHO I disagree with any wall where ever it is.

We (the world) should be making attempt's to get along together, building a wall only segerates and alienates others. It will not solve the problems Israel has with its neighbours, they must start to realize this.

By all means have barriers like check points/boarders etc, but building a physical wall in my opinion will only make matters worse not really improve them.

The wall between the west bank and Israel for example has not solved the problem between Israel and Palestine has it, there are still missiles being fired over, so the chances are it will not fix anything going on between Egypt and Israel, tunnels will be build underneath it, or people will be smuggled over through openings by car or rail or some other means.

Can you imagine living in a world where every country had walls built around then, Israel has to find a better way of dealing with this problem surly.

This is just another example of how NOT to handle diplomatic situations.

And they wonder why ...... ?
