Mark McGwire Admits Using Steroids

Mon Jan 11, 2010 8:14 pm

In a statement released to the AP, McGwire admitted using steroids during the 1998 season when he broke the single season home run record. He also admitted using it on and off for ten seasons.

I'd be surprised if he DIDN'T use steroids. With all the drug/steroid abuse that happened in the past, its no wonder.

This can be filed under the category of "Duhhhh!"

He is just trying to save grace and hopefully clear up his name so he can be voted into the Hall of Fame. I'd rather see Pete Rose in before McGwire, Pete didn't do anything during his playing career that inflated his numbers, it was after his playing career that his gambling either inflated or deflated his checking account.

Now the question becomes, why did he admit it now?

My answer is that he wants to be in the Hall. It would not have seemed sincere if he had done it last week ahead of the Hall voting, but now he'll have a whole year to apologize to America, and really grovel, before the next vote.

I have mixed feelings about Pete Rose too - even as a Reds fan. But one analyst provided an interesting perspective on Pete Rose. It may be true that he never bet on his team to lose, but that still affected how he managed. He may have bet big one day on his team to win, and would use all his resources and effort to ensure a win that day, and then next day, knowing he would probably lose, would not bet on his team.

As for McGwire, yes, than can be filed under "Duhhhh!" Just too bad that the person who broke his record was also a steroid user too.

I think it's a combination of him wanting to be in the hall, as well as Tony Larussa, St. Louis Cardinals manager, convincing him to do so, since McGwire is now the hitting coach for the Cards.

Pete Rose continues to deny what everyone thinks he did and he is not a nice guy when asked about the gambling. I saw an interview recently in 1999 where he was being interviewed for being places on the all century team and he stood by that he never gambled on his team. he may be innocent but the evidence suggests otherwise.

He will likely be admitted to Cooperstown when either he admits is or there is evidence out there that acquits him and if that happens then Major League Baseball owes him an apology (which Selig probably won't give him).

I'm guessing because of how A-rod was forgiven for admitting it last spring as well as players like Andy Pettitte have been forgiven/.

Add in Roger Clemons to that list as well.

I think Barry will keep his mouth shut for a while because he is tied up in BALCO and him admitting it could land him in Jail like it did for Marion Jones.

Pete Rose has already admitted to gambling - quite a while ago in fact.

Bonds has a larger issue. If he admits knowingly using steroids, he admits to perjury.

I agree that McGwire's confession is about the Hall of Fame.

i was thinking more about the impending apology. Bonds is hated by a lot of people, and (since his name is not Ty Cobb) that hatred may be enough in this day and age to keep him out of the hall. He may have to learn from McGwire how to grovel like a man.

Pete Rose deserves to be in there as much as any player I can think of. I'd like to see players like Shoeless Joe Jackson in there before McGwire, but I don't think that will ever happen. But the sad thing is that will never happen.

One of the bad things the steriod scandal has done in my observation is that anytime a player breaks a record - be it a MLB record, or a team record - you have detractors screaming steroids. I remember getting in an argument with a suitemate in college about Ryan Howard of the Phillies. This guy reasoned that Howard had to be on steroids because he was (and still is) a big guy, and because of how many home runs he hits. Am I saying that all players are angels, and steroids aren't used? No. But what I am saying is that they are blurring real talent, and shifting peoples' attention on to who may or may not be using them.

It sure will be interesting to see if the steroids and surly personality keep him out of the hall or not. It's easy to make the argument that Bonds was not only as good as Ty Cobb, but was the greatest player of his generation. The only other position player I'd put in Bonds' category from his generation is Ken Griffey Jr., who was robbed of his most productive years by injury.

I think without getting banned like Pete Rose, Bonds gets in. Probably not on the first ballot as a protest by the voters, but in on the second ballot. Despite the steroids and personality, I couldn't ignore Bonds' ability and productivity over his career if I had a HOF ballot.

I'm shocked, SHOCKED that there is gambling going on in here.

But you know, we in America do not care so much that someone did it or didn't do it, we care more that someone apologized for what we think they did.

Except for OJ. There's no way we'd just say "okay" if he admitted and apologized.

Why now? Why has he decided to come forward now instead of when these allegations came out? Why play innocent if you know you're guilty, and what you did will eventually come back to bite you in the ass?

That being said, I'm not surprised about the fact that he did use steroids.

I bet part of it is that, legally, he pretty much got away with is, and maybe was surprised to see just how many of the Hall voters voted for him anyway. He got about 1/3rd the number of votes you need to get in. Combine that with the fact that there will be some voters that won't waste one of their 10 votes on McGwire knowing that other voters are boycotting him and the fact that the Hall ballot was deep this year (Dale Murphy is STILL on the ballot and not in the hall where he belongs), and voters would rather use one of their precious 10 votes elsewhere.

But now, this could be a momentum swinger for next year.

Duh, I think he finally admitted to the truth he and many others did at the time. If their is anything good about his finally comming out with the truth, it will cause more attention to be paid to make sure other and present ballplayers will stay away from steroids and build up naturally.

The thing is, if you disregard the years he was on steroids (says he started in '89) he does not have the numbers or proven track record to get in the hall. Whereas someone like Bonds (skinny bonds) was already considered a hall of famer by most analysts.

Rose will get in when Selig retires.

Note to all of these loser roidheads: you're all worthless with nothing on Pete Rose. Yes, you may have better hand-eye coordination than some, but your longballs were enhanced. Big fat boo on you.
