Glenn Beck Insults The Indians

Thu Jan 14, 2010 6:20 am

rotfl  . For anyone who listens to Glenn Beck and tries to get something out of his show, explain this clip you are about to see. You conservative guys on the site always get something out of these Beck rants or Limbaugh rants more than I do ( which is a good thing), let's see if you can come up with a sane explanation for why Glenn Beck is insulting India.

http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200912090042

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7NUQZiWl6w

Keep in mind the 10s of thousands of Indian doctors that are in America. Has Glenn ever been to an American hospital? This guy is just unreal at this point. I'm surprise the Indian-American community hasn't come forward to condemn his overtly prejudice statements. Disturbing to know that millions of Americans still take this guy seriously.

That clip is the epitome of why I hate talk show hosts and political pundits. Fox, MSNBC, CNN, anything of the sort. It's the epitome of why I gather all of my news from online, where I don't feel forced to chow down such nonsense and hatred and anger.

Normally I'm not a fan of The Young Turks either, and actually I had a lengthy post written before I heard what that guy said, and actually I think he said it better than I had.

There's nothing wrong with disagreeing with the health-care system or the changes that are being made; but what gets to me is when needless anger, mocking sarcasm, and blatant dehumanization are thrown into the mix. And political pundits like Glenn Beck wield far more power than any of our Senators and Representatives. Why? Because people listen to them. Because most people don't get their opinions based on studying unbiased facts from accredited resources, because it's too hard and too complex. So they get their facts from for-profit media outlets, and their opinions from talk show hosts. And then with that, they VOTE or tend to vote for what Senators and Representatives those talk show hosts root for.

So when you have that many people actively listening, it's potentially a dangerous thing.

I'm guilty too. I admit, I do get a lot of facts from for-profit news networks, but I never get my opinions solely from talk show hosts, and I try to balance it out with studying from proper credentials as well. Like Wikipedia.

Yes, that last sentence was a joke.

I actually found the "Ganges sounds like a disease" part kinda funny. Not insulting at all to me, and I'm 100% Indian by ethnicity.

Beck's extremely over-the-top sarcastic tone was, well, extremely over-the-top, but oh well.

And to be fair, he's got a point, though he didn't elucidate it very well. India's cost of living and such are much lower than the US. Their wages are lower. You can buy stuff there for a fraction of what you'd pay here.

So the only part I really didn't like was his implication that Indian doctors and medical schools are substandard to American ones. There are certainly some very good schools and doctors in India. But I'm not so much insulted as embarrassed that he even said that stuff.

So, to sum up:

Does he have a point with some of what he said? Yes.
Could some of what he said be insulting (to Indians) and embarrassing (to Americans)? Yes.
Am I insulted? No.

EDITED to add: And I totally thought this thread was about the baseball team based on the title  Smile

Watch out - you'll be accused of being racist. My country is according to Indians, and, according to comments in their newspapers, I'd be beheaded if I visited India.

What was that about racial hatred?

The Ganges remark was a cheap shot. That said it is not exactly known for being the cleanest river in the world.

More importantly, are his remarks about labor and overheard costs in India being lower than those in the US wrong? Same goes for health care standards. Is he wrong in saying there is a difference between the US and India? I do think he missed several other important points, but those could have occurred outside the scope of the obviously edited clip.

It came out of his own mouth, "he wouldn't want to go to an Indian doctor." It should also be noted that thousands of these doctors were trained in India, and thousands more were trained in top medical schools in the U.S. But his sheer prejudice sarcasm just annoys the crap out of me. Saying something like "In America where we actually have something called.....flushed toilets", that's profoundly disturbing. I wouldn't take it so lightly if this guy was on comedy central, but he's not. He demands to be taken seriously, and I do. I seriously think he is a disturbing individual.

Quoting Lowrider (Reply 4):

He didn't ask any valid questions. He insulted the SEIU, on his way to insulting the practice of medicine in India. "Dajara Rhaja medical school"? Is that even a school? How about Dr. Sanjay Gupta, he was born here and trained in the U.S., but in Beck's small minded world, he is from "Dajara Rhaja Medical school" near the river that "Sounds like a disease". Just watching that clip, you can see he shows no respect to Indian doctors, he doesn't acknowledge that scores of Indian doctors trained in the top medical schools in the U.S. so NO, they are certainly NOT valid questions, not even by a long shot.

"Some of the money paid to hospitals goes to a SKILLED (Not Indian) doctor, so he can pay for years of training he had at HARVARD", Not "Dajara Rhaja Medical school". And you see nothing wrong with this?

P.S., they editing you refer to, is to cut out about 60 minutes of crap on another of his ridiculous chalk board sessions about our Health Care system. I'm solely focusing on his disrespect towards India.

Quoting FuturePilot16 (Reply 5):
He didn't ask any valid questions.

Of course, why should we be interested if India's medical costs are lower. What interest could that possibly have? If people are seeking lower cost health care in foreign countries, it it worth asking if they are getting the same level and quality of care as they would in the US? Obviously since the question was asked on Fox News and not MSNBC it is invalid (what exactly does that mean anyway?) no matter who asks it.

Quoting FuturePilot16 (Reply 5):
How about Dr. Sanjay Gupta, he was born here and trained in the U.S.

Doesn't that make him an American doctor? Or are you so hung up on his skin color and name you cannot consider him so? That sort of sounds like......prejudice.

Quoting FuturePilot16 (Reply 5):
But his sheer prejudice sarcasm just annoys the crap out of me.

So why do you watch?

Quoting FuturePilot16 (Reply 5):
Saying something like "In America where we actually have something called.....flushed toilets", that's profoundly disturbing.

You are aware that India does not enjoy the same level of sanitary services that the US does, right?

Quoting FuturePilot16 (Reply 5):
He insulted the SEIU,

Do they have some special right that confers immunity to criticism? I ask this as a union member who volunteers on committees. I don't think even my own union is above criticism.

Quoting FuturePilot16 (Reply 5):
"Some of the money paid to hospitals goes to a SKILLED (Not Indian) doctor, so he can pay for years of training he had at HARVARD

So he wants a doctor that went to a top flight medical school, if you had the choice, wouldn't you? Further, what I saw as the subtext of his comments were, "You get what you pay for". Witness the Buick vs Rolls Royce remark, or is that too insulting as well?

You don't like Glenn Beck, that is your prerogative, but despite his occasionally over the top delivery, he makes some good points. I have followed his show in an irregular basis for almost 6 years now. I think I have a pretty good baseline of his beliefs. I have also heard him admit he is his errors and previously incorrect notions. I respect that because I think it takes a level of humility not often seen in public figures.

And many Indian doctors studied in America, but went back to India afterward because their student visas expired and they couldn't get other ones. That's what we ought to be pissed about - we're basically paying to educate them, but we don't see any of the benefits.

A quick google search revealed that there's no such thing as "Dajara Raja Medical School" so I can only assume that between that, the flush toilets, and the Ganges remark, that was Glenn Beck mocking the language/lifestyle of India. Another thing I hate about talk show hosts -- they focus the argument away from the debate itself, and instead dehumanize their opponent or their opponents friends to distract from the real argument.

Quoting Mir (Reply 7):

Agreed, though I don't even think it's a ridiculous sounding name. It might just sound ridiculous because we're used to the styles of our western languages, which developed very differently. The only thing I could equate it to would be like debating with someone who's French about healthcare, and them saying "Oh, I don't mean to offend you, American, you have a beautiful country, and big tall mountains....like....like...the GRAND TETONS! HA HA HA!!"

By the way, I know Beck didn't laugh like that, but what he said was entirely irrelevant nonetheless, and he tried to cover his point with humor as if the humor suddenly made it a legitimate point if it wasn't before.

Well Fox hired him to get viewers and push the envelope. What do you want. I mean of you watch MSNBC you will see those hosts say stuff that is over the top too. What is funny is I bet India has some good surgeons and you would probably would get the same knee or hip replacement done there for a lot less.

You'd be right. This kind of thing is not new. The first heart transplant was done in South Africa. Thailand is reputed to have one of the finest international hospitals in the world in Bamrungrad in Bangkok. South Korea is the de facto capital of successful plastic surgery. You'd be hard-pressed to find better trauma care anywhere other than Israel. The list goes on.

This has nothing to do with Fox News, I really could care less about the network as a whole. If I mention Fox News i'm usually making fun of them, but I find Beck's account disturbing and I take it seriously.

Quoting Lowrider (Reply 6):
Doesn't that make him an American doctor? Or are you so hung up on his skin color and name you cannot consider him so? That sort of sounds like......prejudice.

I never said he wasn't American, and I never pointed out his skin color. I am getting at the fact that he is Indian American and I'm concerned about how a person like Beck would discriminate against him, based on his insensitive remarks about Indians and how that would make people in his fan base discriminate against Indian doctors based on what he said..

Quoting Lowrider (Reply 6):
That sort of sounds like......prejudice

Explain to me how that sounds Prejudice? You make no sense

Quoting Lowrider (Reply 6):
So why do you watch?

I don't watch at all. I found this on a liberal website that takes stupid stuff said by conservatives, and put it on their site and critique it. Good thing is, guys like Glenn Beck make their job easier.

Quoting Lowrider (Reply 6):
You are aware that India does not enjoy the same level of sanitary services that the US does, right?

Your Point is? Let me explain something to you, America is not the only sanitary and civilized country in the world, that is actually one of the most hideous remarks he made. It's not everywhere India that they live in slums, i'm sure they do having running water and ummm......flushed toilets.

Quoting Lowrider (Reply 6):
Do they have some special right that confers immunity to criticism?

Hell no, i've criticized them myself.

Quoting Lowrider (Reply 6):
"You get what you pay for". Witness the Buick vs Rolls Royce remark, or is that too insulting as well?

I'm pretty sure that Beck has never been to India, much less an Indian hospital trained by Indian doctors. Do you know that a lot of knock off products, (such as the Gucci Bag example he provided), a lot of knock off products are just as good as the real thing, especially in NYC. You can go to New York and buy a pair of Nike's for $50, where you normally pay 3 times the price, and you could not tell the difference.

The woman explaining her hip replacement surgery said she got the same hip in India, that she would get at an American hospital for 1/3 the price. She got the same level of service and the same level of professionalism in INDIA, that she would in the U.S. But Beck's prejudice mind leads him to believe that the "Dajara Rhaja Medical Center" cannot produce Indian doctors capable of performing at an efficient level. You can't dispute what he's saying.

I had my roomate watch this video, he ignores politics as much as possible, and even he found the video disturbing and is wondering why a guy can say stuff like this on a "News" Network.

Exactly. This stuff happens all across the board. Unfortunately, while I'm sure it increases ratings, this sort of needless frowning on cultures other than our own is very tacky and classless. Glenn Beck isn't the only offender, and as you said, you can find similar logical fallicies in MSNBC talk show hosts, CNN hosts, and so on and so forth.

I just hate most of these political party talk show people who treat politics like its a sports game and we just have to defeat the other side at all costs. But of course, that's what people want. It's interesting. I guess it's more fun to 'take sides' and hate the enemy, instead of having an adult and friendly political discussion and debate anymore.

That's screwed up. I hate those kinds of stereotypes with people thinking that Indians are the only people that work at gas stations. Where I live, a lot of the gas stations are owned and operated by kurds, whose sons and daughters I personally went to school with. They're not Indians, or Ghandi.

Why are people surprised at anything this clown says? Beck is in it for the shock value. More extreme he is the higher the ratings for his show get. Beck isn't a journalist, newscaster or even a commentator, he is an entertainer. I know that Becks show does represent the views of some Americans. But he is in it for the money and for the fame, and not because he wants to make a positive contribution to his country.

Quoting Lowrider (Reply 22):

Dude, all I said was he criticized the SEIU, I wasn't criticizing him for criticizing the SEIU. I criticized him for his remarks about India.

Quoting Lowrider (Reply 22):

It's disturbing to me because he has lots of fans. There are 10s of thousands of Indian "Looking" doctors in this country. I don't want some insensitive thing he said to be the reason why a few people might think twice before going to a doctor that looks ethnic, that's all i'm getting at.

As for him being animated, I said to you that it wouldn't bother me if he was doing stand up on comic view, I wouldn't mind because I know he's kidding. But he is a political commentator on a supposedly serious News Network, act like it, and leave all the shenanigans for when you're not on television.

Quoting Lowrider (Reply 22):

Course not, but if people trust that they got a good deal (which she said she did), then there's no reason for him to go off and allude to how terrible the medical schools are in India and how terrible it is to practice medicine in India. He started off with serious health care talks and finished by making fun of a country and it's people. You expect me to take something like that seriously?

Because he is a TV pundit who gets paid when people watch and talk about his show. End of story.

Quoting FuturePilot16 (Thread starter):
Keep in mind the 10s of thousands of Indian doctors that are in America

Those are not the doctors he was referencing.

Quoting Vikkyvik (Reply 2):
Beck's extremely over-the-top sarcastic tone was, well, extremely over-the-top, but oh well.

As usual, his delivery completely buries the message he was trying to convey. But on the other side of the coin, the 8 million hits that the Young Turks claim they get on their website must be insomniacs since Cenk Uygur has all the excitement of pressboard in his delivery.

Quoting Vikkyvik (Reply 2):

EDITED to add: And I totally thought this thread was about the baseball team based on the title

I'm from Cleveland and I thought so too! LOL

Quoting FuturePilot16 (Reply 5):
It came out of his own mouth, "he wouldn't want to go to an Indian doctor."

What's the time stamp on that comment? I heard him say "I don't want a discounted doctor".

Quoting Airport (Reply 8):
A quick google search revealed that there's no such thing as "Dajara Raja Medical School

I ddin't even need to do that much to realize it was sarcasm.

Quoting NIKV69 (Reply 10):
What is funny is I bet India has some good surgeons and you would probably would get the same knee or hip replacement done there for a lot less.

True. And if you listen carefully his rant is about the reasons for the cost difference. On top of that he has a point and I'm surprised that the SEIU doesn't catch on to it. One of the differences in cost surely has to do with the support mechanisms between the two countries to include what the support staff is paid, which would include folks doing the same jobs as SEIU members for substantially less. On top of that here you have a union website essentially asking why we shouldn't outsource our medical care. Not a good recipe for SEIU members to keep their jobs or their better pay.

I wonder if the womans hip replacement becomes infected or some other malady related to it rears up if she will fly all the way back to India to get treatment?

Not Indian, not trained at an Ivy League school, not whatever. Where does he draw the line?

we're basically paying to educate them

Foreign students fees, tuitions, etc. have to be payed at the highest rates (non residents), be it by their governments through an scholarship, their parents or themselves. So even taking internships into account, I'd think training foreigners is actually good business for the US.

You might want to also see his millions of followers who take him seriously as well, but of course conservatives don't follow the facts so that's no surprise.

Quoting DXing (Reply 25):
And if you listen carefully his rant is about the reasons for the cost difference.

Of course it was. The cost difference is a good reference, if he could have just stayed on a intelligent path with the issue, It wouldn't need a discussion. But it's the way he referenced the cost difference.

For example, It's cheaper in India because their doctors are trained at the "Dajara Rhaja Medical school", they don't have flushed toilets or their 2 cars like every American does and they apparently live near a river that sounds like a disease, which would be funny if he was a comedian, but he's not.

Unlike American doctors who spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on their medical degrees from Harvard, and he doesn't even allude to the fact that thousands of Indians actually born in India, study at some of the top medical schools in America. So according to him, only American doctors attend top flight school, while the Indians attend "Dajara Rhaja Medical school" which a rally monkey could see is a metaphor for what he sees as a terrible medical practice in India.

I already recognized the underlying message of his rant but of course conservatives can't see why i'm disturbed by his remarks, I am really surprised  Yeah sure

Not true at all. Foreign students (esp med students) pay a lot of $$$. Last time I checked the total fee for medicine in the US was around $250,000, thats just for tution, not including accommodation, books, living expenses etc. So its actually very good business for the US govt. to attract international students. This is what we do here in Oz..education is big business here, in fact its our third largest export after coal and iron ore. Its taken a bit of a hit in recent times though with all the fuss about Indians being attacked here etc.

Not what you said he said. You said:

Quoting FuturePilot16 (Reply 5):

so in effect you are guilty of the same type of misquoting that you accuse him of.

Quoting FuturePilot16 (Reply 28):

Ah, so this is your "critic's " opinion and nothing more?

You think medical schools in india are as expensive as medical schools in the United States? In which country do you think I'll find more flush toliets per capita? How many cars do Indians have versus U.S. citizens? Ok, I'll bite, what is he and whatever that is why does it preclude any kind of humor?

What an embarrassing little man to have on your TV networks - let alone a news channel. What are FOX thinking off? Deeply cringe-worthy outburst...

Quoting Vikkyvik (Reply 2):
Does he have a point with some of what he said? Yes.
Could some of what he said be insulting (to Indians) and embarrassing (to Americans)? Yes.
Am I insulted? No.

I'm not Indian, so apart from the last question I'd agree with what you say. His points are relatively fair but he puts it across in the most xenophobic and zaney manner ever. Bewildering to watch.. The lower living costs necessitate lower medical costs. This has no bearing on the experience of the doctor though it seems that the lure of America or UK can often take away the cream of the crop in India.

But to say the Hindu's holiest River Ganges sounds like a disease is as we say in Scotland' taking it too far' and just not relevant to his point.

I'm surprised more upheaval hasn't been made about his TONE and MANNER with regard to India. A case in the UK of when that piece of work Jade Goodie called Shilpa Shetty - Shilpa Poppadom had many Indians burning effigies in the streets...

Well that's not what they claim

Quoting Lukeyboy95 (Reply 39):
My bad - I thought they were...

Basically, I believe Fox is a News channel with a very slanted conservative view and an Agenda that leans toward the republican party. They Skew their reports to benefit conservative beliefs, and they don't like to admit it. About 10% of their reporting is regular news such as car accidents and shootouts etc. the Other 90% has to do with skewing news to benefit conservatives. Inviting guests on their shows to ciritcize the current gov't, basically anything that makes their fanbase, (about 95% conservatives 5% moderates) happy.

Here's an example. My father is a christian who is very devout, and considers himself about family values and a conservative. He enjoys watching Fox News, however he watches MSNBC and CNN to get their take on the issues as well. So in terms of politics, I see him as a moderate, but the conservative in him loves Fox News.

I'm not sure how many facts were actually presented.

I mean, he didn't even straightforwardly say "the cost of living in India is lower than the US, hence lower medical costs". Instead, he ranted on about the Ganges, and bad doctors trained at substandard schools.

But oh well. It was all amusing, in an utterly ridiculous way.

No argument with the statement on his delivery. But is a lively delivery really that important to the message? 8 million people would seem to say that it isn't. And that's a good thing.

You yourself admit that Beck's hysteria gets in the way of his message.

I'm not pissed about them getting accepted. I'm pissed about them getting kicked out of the country after they're done with their education. If they want to leave, fine, but they should be offered the chance to stay, and let their education actually help the country. For every foreign student that Harvard's medical program educates, that's one less American who can get into the program. If you kick the foreign students out of the country after they're done, you have that many fewer Harvard-educated doctors. And I'd venture that each of those doctors will contribute far more to the national economy over the course of their careers than they spend on their relatively short period of education. Not all of them are going to stay if given the choice, sure, but you can bet that many of them would.

Just to make it clear, I have no problem with foreign students going to US universities. What I object to is them not being allowed to stay afterwards - that's just giving talent away.

Hysteria, antics, call it what you will - they distort his message and we'd be much better off without them. As we would without Olbermann's, though I don't think Olbermann is nearly as much of a showman as Beck.
