2010 NFL Divisional Playoffs

Fri Jan 15, 2010 2:33 pm

Wow! Talk about some upsets last week. Jets over Bengals, Ravens over Patriots, Cowboys over Eagles, and of course, one of the best playoff games I've seen yet, Cardinals over Packers. So on to this week's showdowns!

Ravens @ Colts (CBS SAT 8:15 ET)
Jets @ Chargers (CBS SUN 4:40 ET)
Cowboys @ Vikings (FOX SUN 1:00 ET)
Cardinals @ Saints (FOX SAT 4:30 ET)

My picks:

Colts (As much as I want the Ravens to win.)
Chargers (We haven't forgotten 2004 playoffs buddy)
Cowboys (I think the boys have a legit shot, they've looked good)
Cardinals (The Saints were in decline for the last 3 weeks)

Opinions?

It's kind of a win-win for the Chargers (provided they beat the Jets, which I think is over 95% likely) because if the Colts win, the Chargers aren't scared to play them in their house, and if the Ravens win, the Chargers get to host the AFCCG for the first time since 1980.

Colts--Manning and company will shred the Baltimore Secondary.
Chargers-- Jets won't be able to compere with the San Diego Offense and Defense
Vikings-- Dallas can't handle the vikings D and O. Mind you they handled Philly very well, but with Favre, Harvin, Rice and Peterson the Vikings are much better offensively than Philly was.

Saints--- Arizona had an air war with Green Bay. The Vikes Shut down GB both times this season. Same will happen this weekend to Airizona's O.

Having the Jets beat the chargers , and or Baltimore beating the colts would actually work our better for me in fantasy football, but this year is one where the favorities and higher seeds will probably win because they are that much better.

With the Steelers and New England gone from the playoffs this season, this is the Chargers moment to make a NFL statement. The Chargers never had it so good.My predictions of a Cowboy-Charger Super Bowl still could come true. So,here's my next round choices:

Chargers
Ravens(Home field for Chargers, but we beat Indy twice in playoffs)
Cowboys
Saints

Go Chargers!
Tuesday's Off! Do not disturb.

My predictions:

Ravens vs Colts: The Colts are simply far too superior to Baltimore IMO.
Jets vs Chargers: Phillip Rivers will crush the Jets and Mark Sánchez will go back to what he does best, throw interceptions.  Wink
Cowboys vs Vikings: The Cowboys did that they had to do, throw Michael Vick and the Eagles OUT of the playoffs, now they can go back to losing. Big grin
Cardinals vs Saints: I'm going with the upset. The Saints have been on a steep decline the last three regular season games, plus I now actually hope Kurt Warner gets the chance to retire with another Superbowl ring.

Therefore, the Championship Games will be:

AFC: Chargers vs Colts
NFC: Cardinals vs Vikings

That's what I am thinking as well. Sure, New Orleans has the better record, but they've entered a bit of a tail spin down the stretch. I don't think Romo and crew are going to get past the Vikings defense. Plus, there's Brett Favre...

I actually like the Ravens here...the Colts are simply way too finesse...I mean some of their linemen are wearing towels...the starters haven't played a full game in nearly a month...and their one-dimensional...they can't run the ball...which plays into the Ravens favor...

Ravens have been doing what they need to do to keep the Colts in check. Or they were, until they put up a pathetic effort in their last drive of the half, and let Manning have the ball back with enough time to drive down the field and score.

10-3 would have been manageable for the Ravens. 17-3, not so much.

The problem of the Ravens are the penalties. The game has turned into a penalty bonanza, combined with two fumbles (one on an interception return!).

Well crap, 1 for 1 right now (Colts won, Cardinals loss.) Blowout by the Saints, and penalties galore (go figure) in Indy once again. I really really hope I'm 1 for 2 again at very least tomorrow (that 1 being the Chargers of course.) Ugh, very nervous for tomorrow, yet, can't wait. Big grin

Like I said, Arizona got murdered by the Saints. I guess that bye-week must have done them some good. Too bad for Warner though, but let's move on to further business, and hope the Cowgirls got their asses kicked big time.  Wink

Allen isn't all they have either. The Williams's and Ray Edwards are awesome as well. Romo is a mediocre QB. The key to your team is the running game.

Didn't your hometown technically abandon the team? I mean, if attendance hadn't been an issue the Rams wouldn't have left town....  Wink

You believe that? I think the $120 million cash payment to Georgia had a lot more to do with it. Not to mention the terrible way in which the front office ran the team, resulting in it being a laughing stock and turning interest to the Raiders.

This article is a pretty good one on just how we pulled out all the stops to keep the Rams and how they were greedily stolen.

And yet at the end of the day, it's no different than the plotline to the movie "Major League" - yes, the owner made shady moves that hindered the team, however had attendance not plummetted (and therefore, revenues as well) the team wouldn't have moved.

So ultimately, it's about the fans (revenue) not showing up. The owner's actions are incidental.

- Jerry Jones's patience will run out

As to the QB question, I also wonder whether they will draft a new QB this year, or they'll acquire a new one from the league. And now, may the Chargers win.

Wow, can the Cowboys be anymore overrated? Really, whenever they're on TV everybody salivates over them. The announcers seemed to talk about the Cowboys a lot more than the Vikings and most people not from MN chose the Cowboys to win, neglecting the fact that the Vikings are the far superior team.

Well eat that Cowboys! Bring on the Saints!

Those of you who thought that the Jets would crumble in the face of a good team, think again. What a job by the defense today - the first team to hold San Diego below 20 points this season. Plenty of defense and just enough offense: the Jets way.

Oh, and we thank Nate Keading for his support.  biggrin

More of the same next week in Indy - the Jets will come in big underdogs, and they've got an outside shot to win. Hope the result is more of the same as well.

Sigh. Another promising Chargers season ended much too early due to stupid mistakes. At this point, I'd like them to be a #3-6 seed in the playoffs, because clearly having a first-round bye is a thorn in their side. At least if they play a wild-card game first, they make it at least to the divisional round.

The bottom line is that as a Charger fan, I could never defect. I'll be back in 8 months rooting for them just as I always do, and the emotional roller coaster will begin again.

I guess now it's time to count down to baseball season!

But as soon as they start winnings and showing playoff potential, you will be right there actively showing your support, right?

Nope, cause I know they will fail. Like they always do. San Diego is destined not to win ANY championships, end of story.

LOL Im sorry Alex. That statement makes me laugh. You are not the typical Chargers fan. Good for you. Keep waving that flag through the 8 months. I think everyone else already took them down. Wink

Yeah, I'm not a bandwagoner type of fan, and I think that many Chargers fans are, which is why IMHO so many people consider the Chargers an overrated team. And it's also why so many people were elated that they lost today.

More of the same next week in Indy - the Jets will come in big underdogs, and they've got an outside shot to win. Hope the result is more of the same as well.

Yes, but this time they'll be even more of an underdog, and they'll get stuffed by Peyton Manning and his crew even though they did not convince me in their playoff match. Like I said, the Ravens were responsible for a penalty galore in their Divisional against Indy, and those penalties (along with the overall bad performance of the team) eventually cost them the game. That being said, I'm going to make another prediction for the upcoming games:

New York Jets vs Indianapolis Colts: 14:27
Minnesota Vikings vs New Orleans Saints: 35:45

That's what people said about the Chargers.  Smile

Kelly took a team to 4 straight Super Bowls. No one ever did that, before or since.

And failed to bring any of them home and Warner has one less SB appearance. Let me be clear I am not dumping on Kelly as he was a superb player, but if he gets in because of that then Warner who has achieved more success wise should also get in.

Warner went from stacking shelves to SB MVP. I'm not sure what the American dream actually is, but this must be pretty close.

Back to the playoffs:

The Jets have great momentum, but Indy made a very good Ravens side look ordinary in a game I thought would be a lot closer. Would love to see the Jets in the SB, though.

As for the NFCCG, I have a feeling it is going to be a classic.

Can't wait for next week.
If you was right..................I'd agree with you

I live about 3 miles west of Giants Stadium where the Jets play, so you know my preference that the Jets win. I am giving the Jets a 'punchers chance' of winning over Indy next week.

In that 1st Half, I wasn't sure of the Jets having a chance of winning over the Chargers as they kept stalling out on drives, but by the end of the half with only a 7-0 Chargers lead I held on to optimism. The Jets used their strengths, a sophicated and well executed D and O of rushing and short passes. The Chargers QB was under pressure all day, their rushing game was neutered, then their kicker blew it. One overlooked item was how the Jets managed the last 2 minutes of the game, using their last time out and timely short run to kill the clock and the time to allow a comeback by the Chargers. One has to wonder if Coach Norm Turner, who blew another in a long line of post-season games will get the ax.

As to the rest of the Games:
Indy just overwhelmed a Ravens team that just didn't have it on their offence and Indy's D doing an excellent job. No rust on them despite their decisions to go easy at the end of the season and the bye.
NO beating Arizona - NO's O, especially their stepping up of the Rushing game and the hit on QB Warner made it a solid win for NO.
Minny and the 'Boys - I depise Dallas, they have an owner that is a jerk, so I have no problem seeing them lose. The Vikings just rocked all day with a supeior game on both sided of the ball, led by Farve who seems to have found the Fountain of Youth and still can throw with the best of them.
Minny-NO ought to be a good matchup, I am not sure who to root for, NO has the home edge in a city and region still working it's way out of the Katrina disaster.

Please. I love to see that sanctimonious fool lose.

Funny, that's what I was thinking about Tony Romo, Jerry Jones and Troy Aiken.

Quoting Continental (Reply 29):
Wow, can the Cowboys be anymore overrated? Really, whenever they're on TV everybody salivates over them.

Troy Aiken had his tongue so far up the Cowboy's backsides the first half of the game it was disgusting.

Quoting LTU932 (Reply 32):
And yet, the Jets have WON! I just can't believe it myself.

I did give the Jets a slim chance, but clearly they stepped up big time.

Quoting Mir (Reply 35):
Oh, and we thank Nate Keading for his support.

Indeed, he's the "player of the game" for the Jets!

I also give them an outside shot to win, and I'd love to see Payton lose.

J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS!

However, you can give that a rest.

Quoting EA CO AS (Reply 39):
Like it or not, Warner's a first-ballot Hall of Famer. And he deserves it.

Sure, because God's on his side!  Smile

In any regard, I think he deserves to be in the HOF.

He really can't be blamed for the Giants years, they had a crappy O line and he spend most of the game on his backside.

Me too. Hopefully it's a close game. I at least want the Colts to sweat!

My heart favors MIN over NO but my head says NO will pull it out.

Of course, I was the one who said bet the house on IND over NYJ, but I wasn't counting on the fool coach yanking his starters...

5 Pro bowls, 2 league MVP's, Superbowl MVP and winner, top three Superbowl passing records, only second player in history to score 100 TD's with 2 different teams. And he's only Hall of Very Good? And Jim Kelly's in?

I just don't think he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Peyton Manning or Tom Brady....when there's pressure in his face he becomes a below average QB....

Quoting LTU932 (Reply 26):
Antonio Ramiro aka Tony Romo will be out of a job

Quoting LTU932 (Reply 26):
As to the QB question, I also wonder whether they will draft a new QB this year, or they'll acquire a new one from the league. And now, may the Chargers win.

Relax....Romo is an above average QB who would be gobbled up in a heartbeat if he was a free agent....and honestly you think a guy like Colt McCoy would be an upgrade at QB?? Obviously you hate the Cowboys...but one must type sanely...
