Just Saw The President's Motorcade

Fri Jan 22, 2010 5:57 pm

For the first time since FDR in 1942, a sitting president was in my hometown today, as President Obama is in Elyria to visit local businesses and to speak at my daughter's college, Lorain County Community College.

My wife and I were running errands this morning, and we detoured towards the west side of town, and got to see his motorcade pass about a block and a half from where we were standing. Not close enough to see the President, but pretty cool either way.

My daughter pretty much has a front-row seat at the college to see him speak at 2pm, and she's really excited about the event.

I was fortunate enough and privileged to see President Reagan speak in person at Bowling Green in 1984. Wish I could have gone to the speech today.

How many of you have seen your current head-of-state make a speech? Doesn't matter who is in office, I'd go see our President any day if I had the chance. You may never have the privilege again.

He came to my college back in December. But it was by invite only. Not only was the speech invite only they (Secret Service and the NYS Police) closed half the parking and restricted access to half the campus. Screw that.

I don't like those either. Ours at BG, you had to stand in line to get tickets, and I waited about 3 hours to get mine. Some of my friends were like "You can't stand Reagan, so why are you going?" Easy-because I may never have gotten another chance to see a sitting POTUS speak. My father was an American History teach, and would have loved to see a POTUS speak, but he never has in his 79 years. So it's a rare honor and privilege to see one speak.

Obama came to my univ. in Novemberish. We were all very excited, but MIT screwed the students basically by inviting only a 100 or so, the rest were all faculty and other high-influence types. Did get to see him as he drove by though, he waved which was amusing. The admin piped the speech into numerous rooms around campus, and we appreciated his local jokes (essentially laughing about Harvard and making a hacking joke).

Good times

What’s he going to speak about? How the Federal government is now swallowing up the entire student loan business?

I saw Bill Clinton speak at an campaign rally in Oakland's Jack London Square in 1996. (I wasn't a conservative back then  Big grin ).

He is probably the most gifted public speaker on the world stage.

Which isnt a bad thing. The rates charged by private companies are outrageous. Id rather pay 6.25% to the feds than 14-15% to Wells Fargo and the like.

Agreed! With a college education practically mandated in today's economy (to succeed that is) I don't see any reason why ensuring that students ho are heavily indebted by the end of their education should be forced to pay 15% interest. 6% interest is still a profit after all...

I saw him shortly before the election at a diner here in Philadelphia. We (my dad and I) got there well before dawn though Obama was not scheduled to arrive until around 9AM. While he was outside speaking, I asked one of the secret service agents how I might get an autograph. he told me to stand in a certain place, and when Obama was finished, and ushered back in, the agent would attempt to get him close to me. It worked. I have his autograph, along with those of several other local politicians on a campaign sign.

I've never seen a president in person before but me and the rest of my family had to deal with Obama's motorcade too many times when he had his 757 at MDW. He snarled traffic on the southwest side all the time.

I'd rather of wished to just see the motorcade once.

I haven't seen my current head of state in person, but I have seen another current head of state - Michelle Bachelet, the president of Chile. She came to the Institute of Politics here a couple years ago, and I got to see her speak.

I have seen GWB's motorcade in PHX for the '04 debate. In '08, a neighbor hosted a fundraised for McCain which he and GWB attended, I got a quick peek but couldn't quite swing the recommended donation of $100,000 for a Presidential handshake.

I've seen Clinton/Gore, Bush, and Obama here in East Tennessee. McCain and Bush also came on the campaign trail from what I remember.

It was cool the first time Clinton and Gore came at the same time while in office. Seeing the 747 and the 707 takeoff together was amazing.

At my graduation at Yale in 2001 we lucked out: we had both President George W. Bush and (then) Sen. Hillary Clinton give speeches. Clinton spoke during student day on Sunday, with Bush speaking on Monday at the Commencement as he was receiving an honorary degree (he's a Yale alumni and he had just won the 2000 elections). Mexico's former President Ernesto Zedillo was on hand receiving an hon degree as well, and Gov Pataki from NY was there as a guest (a relative of his was graduating with my class). Later on while in the Air Force Honor Guard I performed at separate events were Gov Schwarzenegger and Colin Powell were the guest speakers.

Years later in 2008 I was in DC on an Air Force TDY and got to see GWB again, this time leaving the WH on his motorcade (he was riding with Laura on their way to inaugurate the new Nationals Stadium). Later in '08 I relocated to DC and attended Obama's inauguration so I got to see all of the currently living Presidents as tiny little figures in the distance, no more than 3mm tall!! (We were standing by the Washington monument) At least I got to see Obama's motorcade a few weeks ago, his car passed me no more than 8 feet away and I got a good look at both him and Michelle, and not too long ago the Indian PM's motorcade drove past me during the head of state's DC visit. Guess it's one of the perks of living in the Capital...

I had the privilege of driving in motorcades for (then) Vice-President George H. W. Bush in Houston in the 80s- fun stuff, and sort of odd, driving down a freeway with no one else there, and motorjocks blasting by you as they leap-frogged from ramp to ramp.

Later, got to hear in-person speeches from President Bush (again, 41), at my graduation from law school; and some years later, President Bush (43, this time), oddly enough, in the same venue.

Wish I could have heard President Clinton in person - agreed, he is one the great orators of our time.

Not trying to brag, but I also got Clinton's the day before he won election to his first term, and I also have Dick Cheney's (although I despise the man) on back of a press pass from the 2000 RNC when it was here in Philly. I was there as part of a group of high school journalists.

I got to see President HW Bush in 92 when he was campaigning against Clinton. It was cool because Air Force One taxied up and he got out and walked up to the podium, with that beautiful 747 as the back drop.
