The Pope Asks Priests To Have Their Own Blogs

Tue Jan 26, 2010 9:30 pm

i was rather surprised to find this article in a British newspaper. I never thought the old conservative Pope would tell priests to go online and start blogs. I knew the Pope had an I-pod but I had no idea he had any interest for the cyber world.

Pope tells priests to get blogging
Pope Benedict XVI urged priests to use the internet "astutely" and make the most of opportunities offered by modern technology.

"Priests are thus challenged to proclaim the Gospel by employing the latest generation of audio-visual resources – images, videos, animated features, blogs, websites – which, alongside traditional means, can open up broad new vistas for dialogue, evangelisation and catechesis," he said.

This sounds rather John Paul 2-esque for Benny 16. I'm a Catholic and I wouldn't read these blogs, I bet some of them would be awfully boring.

The Pope may have gotten the idea from "The Priests" the two Catholic Priests from Northern Ireland who have been number one in the UK charts for weeks on. They have become extremely popular. They have won many music awards and done a number of concerts..

This is their website:

They have made a recording at the Vatican.

Sound's like a novel idea but ....

Are these new blogs controlled and policed by the Vatican?

I would imagine that there may need to be some restrictions placed on the more controversial priests. Like content about any "hot topics".eg, contraception, sex before marriage etc

The more liberal ones perhaps, may have to be rained in a little or this just a free for all ?

Personally I think its a great idea, and hopefully it will make the church a little more open to those who may otherwise not bother having contact with and any dialogue is better than none.
