School District Bans Dictionary

Wow.

From the article:

But some families are supporting the schools and say it's up to the district to do everything it can to shield children from explicit language.

Really? Is that what we do these days? Shield kids from everything that we don't want them to see/hear?

Hell, I wish I wasn't as shielded when I was a kid!
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

Interesting that even Fox seems to think that this move by the school district is a stupid overreaction.....

Oh please, come on people! It's a free country, and your kids WILL find out about oral sex, no matter what books they do or don't have access too.

It's a f*****g dictionary, get over it.

Oh good lord. There's a point where the "won't someone think of the children" argument goes too far and this is one of those points. What about the definition of murder? Violence? Are these not things from which children should be shielded?

Here in Utah, a lot of the grocery stores put "barriers" in front of certain magazines like Cosmo because the models often show cleavage. Parents who think that the worst thing their children are exposed to is a definition of oral sex or a model's cleavage are living in a fool's paradise. I remember that my neighbors and I would look at dirty rags we found when we were still in elementary school and I know that a lot of other people have had simliar experiences. I can guarantee that many of these parent's children have already seen a Playboy or some other porn magazine.

Quoting Vikkyvik (Thread starter):

Wow. This happened in the Menifee school district, which is quite close to where I live. So much for the idea that CA is a "liberal hippie progressive" state. SoCal (outside of LA and SD) is probably the most strongly religious and conservative area of the US outside of the Bible Belt.

Now that I hear that this happened in Southern CA, I understand completely.

I sure did... even as young as 8! My parents knew better than to pretend I would never be curious about girls and sex and whatnot. They were always upfront and honest whenever I had a question on that subject. They never hid things from me, and I'm arguably fairly well-adjusted Big grin
