February Self-Pic Thread

Mon Feb 01, 2010 6:51 pm

Well since it's the first day of the new month, here's the new month's self-picture thread (I'm kind of surprised someone in a time zone east of the US didn't beat someone over here to the punch haha).

Anyway, to get things rolling, my pictures are from the Detroit Auto Show a couple weeks ago. It was my first one and I thought it was pretty neat but my girlfriend said it was disappointing compared to previous years (I guess with all the cutbacks currently plaguing the auto-industry)

Sitting in one of the Mustangs on display. My only complaint is that it's a Ford Mustang and not a North American P-51 Mustang.  wink

My girlfriend and I down by the fountain located at the "Eco Test Drive" section of the Auto-Show where you could test drive all sorts of new electric vehicles. You can tell the height difference between us - I'm sitting down - she's standing up.

Not a recent one - taken at Xmas but it's the most recent I have. Also, this is the nicest I've ever dressed so I'm milking it   I had slackened off my tie at this point, and yes, for some reason my hair makes my head look strange.

Blanked out face because I know for a fact he'd probably kill me if he found out his face was plastered on the internet.

She is correct.
I've seen the decline over the years too but I don't go every year. A good friend of mine has been going every year since 1978. He's certainly seen it go downhill over the years. Despite the lack of styling in recent years, the whole experience has been cheapened. The auto show used to be a swanky and very classy experience.
There used to be live music, cocktails, fancy displays and absolutely gorgeous women in gowns at the displays.
Today it's almost like going in to a WalMart with people getting in your face with advertisements and coupons that have nothing to do with automobiles. Some manufactures aren't even handing out brochures at these auto shows.
I hear that the Tokyo auto show is the one to go to and they still have maintained a sense of class at their auto show.

This is after an hour and a half waiting for a bus and airstairs... and I loved every second of it! N766NC DC-9-51 built in 1977 originally for North Central Airlines operated NW7148 DTW-JFK on 21 Dec. Many thanks to Captain Alex, First Officer Joe and the rest of the cabin crew!

Do they have a lot of US auto-makers at the Tokyo Auto-Show? My girlfriend's dad works for GM so she's all about GM cars (and the Ford Mustang). You'd love hanging out with her 'Fly - she's as much of a car nut as I am a plane geek.

At the Philly Auto Show the only 2011 Mustang on display was the 5.0 model (in yellow) that was NOT available for seating. The Philly show had 2 or 3 2010 Mustangs (except the Shelby model) that one could sit in.

If it's any consulation, Ford named its pony car the Mustang after the P-51 Mustang plane.

It probably won't be a -40. They have seven of them and only use them as subs; apparently they don't sell seats for a -40 type (only the -30 and -50). Are the last two rows blocked out? It'll be a -30 if that's the case (as will be the case when I do DTW-LGA next month).

Now if you manage to escape to Tokyo auto show without her, put all your photos you don't want her to see on a separate flash drive.

My friend caught this shot of me suiting up before ziplining on Sentosa Island, Singapore. It was a nice break during my study program at my university's Singapore campus that also took me to Hong Kong, Macau, China, and Thailand.

I was thinking about it, the photo looks like something I'd see in my workplace, (except probably I'd have to be shirtless).

The last two rows are blocked out, but DL often does this with their MD-88 flights too. When I pull up my flight info on delta.com and click the flight number, it says "DC-9-40". The seat map says "DC-9-40" as well. Guess I'll find out next month.

St. Patty's Day - March 17th. I continue onto Flint, ironically of course, going through DTW and where I will staying is far closer to DTW. But RDU-DTW-FNT was far cheaper than just RDU-DTW on my multi-leg itinerary which is ultimately DAB-RDU, then RDU-FNT then DTW-DAB.

This was my first time in a Convair and I'm glad I took up the opportunity! And I was lucky to ask for the jumpseat first because there were 2 other aviation enthusiasts onboard! Quite a fascinating sight from my perspective!

I haven't done one of these in a LONG time so I'll post a couple.

Inside the Tupolev Tu-144 at the Technik Museum in Sinsheim, Germany. It was freezing rain and cold as hell outside

With SkyGirl on United 737-300 N334UA, DEN-FSD, four days before all the guppies were retired from the fleet.
