Should Terry Lose England Captaincy?

John Terry is stripped of the England captaincy due to an affair with Wayne Bridge's former girlfriend.

Interesting video interview with Davies, he says this is a 'football decision' rather than a 'moral decision' as the incident may cause some sort of spill out onto the pitch and dent England's hopes of success in RSA.

Thoughts??

I was watching this unfold on TV and thought "I wonder how long it will take for slimeball to appear" then sure enough, there was Max Clifford with Vanessa Perroncel. At first they said the bidding for the story would start at 250,000 pounds but this morning she said she won't sell her story. The disappointment in Clifford's voice was obvious.

Then Capello replaces him with Rio - who is currently banned for 4 matches for violent conduct...

So who would you listen to more and who is a better 'ambassador' for the game - someone who scored with a lingerie model or someone banned for violent conduct?

I think this is bullshit, and I say that as a fan of Germany's football team. Why would you punish John Terry for something that happened outside the pitch? Why not settle things with Wayne Bridge, and end it there? Had he shown someone the finger in the same way as Stefan Effenberg, then this punishment (and worse) would have been justified, but for having sex with someone is just ridiculous. Let him do his thing in private life (as long as it's legal, and last time I checked, extramarital affairs are legal in the UK), and if a conflict of interrest arises, give him the chance to settle it. This isn't a football decision AT ALL.

No. If Bill Clinton didn't lose the White House, why should Terry lose the Captaincy?

When will the media learn that it has no place interfering in private dilemmas. if they hadn't talked it up into something ridiculous (For goodness sake he's not even in the first billion men in history who have cheated with their mate's/cousin's/Brother's/Father's Mrs)

Well he has.

Usually I'm all for resisting any puritanical stuff.
However, was it wise for the England Captain to shag around with those involved, or with a history with, fellow team-mates?
Oh hang on, these are vastly overpaid, over hyped, over feted, arrested in early adolescence, semi sociopathic 'footballers' aren't they?

Terry was one of a bunch of Chelsea charmers who when their flight got cancelled on Sept 11th 2001, went on a booze fuelled bender in Heathrow hotels, culminating in loutish behavior in front of some similarly stranded Americans, who were still watching the terror attacks on TV, while Terry and his other 'sporting ambassadors' had food fights, got more drunk, then abusive to these other hotel guests.

A few months later he had to be removed forcibly from a nightclub who, being the spoilsports they are, took exception to Terry urinating in a glass and throwing it around.

With a history of cheating in the early stages of his marriage, would you as a fellow England player want Terry anywhere near your partner at any kind of social event?
He has interesting ideas about 'team bonding' top say the least.

It makes a great deal of sense. John Terry has a long history of loutish behaviour and womanising. GDB has only highlighted a few of the incidents.
As Engand Captain he was in the position of being a role model for many young easily influenced people. Some role model.
He has publicly sold himself as a dedicated man devoted to his wife and children, and earnt Millions from this image. Why should he profit from such hypocrisy ?

All that matters should be what goes on on the pitch.

In that case why have a captain at all. In football their are very few if any opportunities for the captain to influence the game whilst it is being played. The captains primary role is as a figure head and and ambassador for the team off the pitch. Some figure head, some ambassador !!!!!

I cannot help any problems of basic comprehension you may have, or just no understanding of irony, whichever it is.

Until it potentially impacts upon team cohesiveness, had the other women in Terry's booze swilling, foul mouthed, pissing in drinks glasses social life had no links with other England players, I'd agree that it should not affect his position in the team.
But it was too much to expect him to 'get' that it seems.
As I said, stuck in early adolescence.

Face it, many of these 'football hero's in the English game are spoilt, stupid and for all the 'apologies' their agents have to put out time and again, fundamentally do not give a crap.
Why should they, they've got their taste free Cheshire or Surrey mansions.

I pity those aching to see '1966 again', 1) that was something of an anomaly, 2) They don't really have the chops for it, 3) Just imagine how unbearable they'd be if they somehow did pull it off.

Little piece of advice: Don't get people started on 1966, especially us Germans.

This is just ridiculous. Being a football captain has nothing to do with adultery other than making otherwise ugly men chick magnets.

Yes, unless he is stupid enough to get involved with someone who has history with a so called team-mate. Right before a World Cup too!
Trying that absurd 'super injunction' on the press was stupid too, that alone shows extremely questionable judgement.

I agree with you. I think the problem is that some people dont realise that these guys are supposed to portray a role model image off the pitch too. Im not saying be angels but within reason and not get hauled out by security, disturb everyone and engage in holier than thou adultery (+ breaking man code) and that goes particularly for captains and whatever they do, especially outside of their property is in public light. Look at it this way, do you want your kids looking up to a person who has such a history and engages in such behavior and then explaining to them that it really doesnt matter what they do off the field as long as on it they are good. That just isnt right, no matter which way you look at it.

He only has himself to blame no one else, i like him as a player but he does come with a lot of baggage. This isn't his first time he was cheating on his partner, he's done it plenty of times before. When will he learn his lesson? Whether it's a private matter or not is irrelevant, when you're in his position don't expect to get away with such disgraceful behaviour. Too bad he flicked on a header to Drogba last night.

Well, normally I would consider this a purely personal affair, he shags around with who-ever he wants, that's his responsibility. Still, considering that in this case it happened with the wife of a team mate, it will most likely influence how the team functions, so I think the decision is defendable in this case, as said in the BBC article: not on moral grounds, but for sportive reasons. Should it have been with someone who has nothing to do with the team, and it wouldn't have an effect on his functioning as the captain, I'd say: no reason to strip him of the captainship.

As for the "moral role model": they are just soccer players... some guys who run behind a ball. I wouldn't exactly expect too much moral guidance from them.

On the other hand, people expect moral guidance from an ex-hitlerjugend member, who's now walking around in a dress... seems like everybody can be a moral role model nowadays.
