New Orleans Gets A New Mayor (finally!)

Sun Feb 07, 2010 2:39 pm

Goodbye Nagin...don't let the door knock you on the way out!

Landrieu was easily the most qualified out of all of the candidates.

Could this mean better times lie ahead for the Crescent City?

Pardon my ignorance. Im not up to date on NOLA politics, but does Mitch Landrieu have any connection to Mary "I will buy my way into Healthcare along with Bill Nelson" Landrieu?

BTW good to see Montell Williams...err sorry Ray Nagin out of there.

He's her brother. I'm not a big fan of Mary, but he's been a pretty good Lt.Gov...so I'm hopeful that, at the very least, he'll be a lot better than our last joke of a mayor.

I trust you if you say so. Im not going to be an armchair CEO and pretend I know whats going on down there so the best of luck to you. Good luck, we can only wish for such a historic event here in Chicago. Unfortunately, our corruption and general idiocy can probably only be matched by Hip Hop Kwame in Detroit.

Chi-town is a great city so I hope at some point things start to improve on that front. You know I'm used to corruption living in Louisiana and previously Rhode Island for a few years. Too bad it's easier to find the corrupt areas than the non corrupt areas it seems nowadays.

I'm not sure why I remember this, but wasn't Nagin the one that said New Orleans is a chocolate city? Or something like that. Useless trivia.... makes up 90% of my memory.

Yeah, he made an (in)famous speech after Katrina in which he stated that "New Orleans will be chocolate again", since the city, which was mostly african-american before Katrina was seeing more of a mixed demographic after the storm. He later said that he meant it to mean a mix of people of all colors, but the damage was done. The dude went crazy after Katrina. Before the storm I really liked the guy...but he's been the laughing stock of the city over the past few years. I'm not lying when I say that no one is sad to see him go.

So with the new mayor...New Orleans is now a "White Chocolate City"?

What about Brad Pitt? When I was down in N.O. in August I saw t-shirts and stickers with "Brad Pitt for Mayor" everywhere. I understand it was only a joke but I am sure even he would be able to do a better job than Nagin.

New Orleans is an absolutely awesome place, by the way - I hope it finally gets a Mayor that can reduce corruption and put the city back on track. Maybe he can start with that corrupt deal his sister struck in the Senate.
Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

Even though Pitt has a home in New Orleans, the city charter states that you have to live in the city for at least five years before running for office. So, Pitt was out before he could even get in, since the home is relatively new....less than three years. It was started as a joke by a professor from Tulane University, but it turned into a grass roots campaign that a lot of citizens got behind. Pitt said on the NBC Today show that he was "running on the gay marriage, no religion, legalization and taxation of marijuana platform. I don't have a chance."

I think so. Mitch has a good head on his shoulders.

He also tried the hardest. He was Nagin's closest challenger the last time.

He and Mary are very different people politically.

Ray was an excellent mayor right up until he got a couple screws knocked loose while he was holed up in the Hyatt during Katrina. Something snapped in him I think.

No way it has been less than 3 years, and the house itself is certainly much older. I believe Brad and Angie have been in town for about 4 years at this point.

She would enjoy doing yoga outside in that humidity.

The press here has provided a mixed view of Mayor Nagin and his tenure, generally unfarovably post-Katrina. I wish the new Mayor and the people of New Orleans the best of luck.

You are aware that he was term-limited right?
It's not like he was voted out of office or anything.

Mary Landrieu is the best you can get out of the state of Louisiana.

No im not aware, I said before I dont follow NOLA politics on a daily basis. But didnt he win last time with a tiny margin if I remember correctly? And since hes been doing a piss poor job from what I am reading and hearing I imagine he would be defeated if he ran, am I correct on that assumption or no?

Who knows?
He can claim that he was mayor of New Orleans when the Saints won their first Super Bowl.

Bragging rights for sure; but that's only for the short term.

Those of you that remember Pep/ANCFlyer; he probably would've posted something like this (in reference to former-Mayor Nagin).

Bye Bye, Mayor
