Confusion Over Power Plant Blast In CT

Sun Feb 07, 2010 6:51 pm

I'm watching Sky News and they are reporting an explosion at the Kleen Power Plant in Connecticut. Initial reports said 2 dead, now they are reporting 50 dead. I guess the facts will emerge as time passes.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Police retract statement that 2 died in Connecticut explosion

Middletown, Connecticut (CNN) -- Police on Sunday retracted an earlier statement that two people had been killed in an explosion at a Connecticut power plant.

Middletown police Sgt. Chuck Jacobucci said he misinterpreted something heard over a police radio, and cannot confirm any fatalities.

The explosion occurred about 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Kleen Power Plant in Middletown, a suburb of Hartford.

The plant was under construction and had not yet opened, Middletown Officer Kevin White told CNN. It was set to go online later this year, he said, and was in a "testing phase."

About 50 people, most of them construction workers, were working on the site at the time, said Al Santostefano, deputy fire marshal.

Middlesex Hospital in Middletown said it received 11 patients from the explosion. Of those, one was sent to a hospital in Hartford, said spokesman R. Brian Albert. Two others were treated for minor injuries and released, and the remaining eight were being evaluated.

The patients' injuries included extremity or pelvic fractures, said emergency room physician Dr. Jonathan Bankoff. Some people reported being thrown 30 or 40 feet, he said.

This is an odd story. It's not reporting very heavy here. But at the same time no one knows what is going on. We are about 30 miles from the explosion.

Yea I know some people from middletown and I'm about 25 miles from there too. I still don't get what's going on

There may not be any confirmed dead, so far (by 5:30 PM) about 12-14 have been sent to hospitals, so possibly the rest are missing or just unaccounted for.
Apparently this is a natural gas fired electric power plant under construction. A 'purge' of a line for the natural gas was in progress and something went wrong in the procedure causing the explosion. A significant part of the structure has collasped and may be were some are trapped under.
Like an airline accident, I would presume this will be throughly investigated by OSHA and other Federal as well as state agencies, what happened will be plausable determined and the info used to prevent another like situation/disaster.

A group of people go to their job today and are either dead or hurting bad. As terrible situation for their families and the community.

Very common with events like this. The media wants a body count.... the first responders what to quickly treat the injured. Also, the company wants to get notification out to the next of kin first.. before hearing numbers on the news

I just went and worked the scene.

There's the "official" body count - which is 5. It's 6:14 eastern time.

And there's the cops running around going "there are bodies everywhere."

I'll find out more at about 3 am.
