Your Longest Drive?

Tue Feb 09, 2010 7:44 am

Ok since mother nature is keeping me in NY another week as I looked at the nationwide doppler and saw another huge storm approaching it got me remembering some long hauls. So what is yours? Rules are easy only stops for gas, food and bathroom breaks. No sleeping of any kind. Even a quick nap at a rest stop is disqualification!

My personal best is Texarkana to my driveway in Bay Shore NY. 1433 fun filled miles complete with outrunning twisters that absolutely turned Springfield upside down. In fact Alex Trude will remember that night.

I am looking to break my record my getting to OKC from NY. Game on!

Detroit to San Francisco via Santa Barbara (I-80 to I-76 to I-70 to I-15 to a whole byzantine mess in LA to US-101). Did the same trip (via SBA every time) three times.

I did West Lafayette, IN, to Tucson, AZ straight through, stopping for energy drinks, food, and gas. Took about 24 hours, because I was hauling ass through Texas on I-40 in the middle of the night at around 110MPH

Chicago to Phoenix in 1998 with the brand new (2 year old) family Dodge Caravan, forest green.

Sofia to Istanbul (with bus or car = equal torture)

The biggest torture for me now is back and forth between SIUC and Chicago... I57 is the most boring highway you could imagine. I would rather drive 5 times a week to Columbia, MO from Chicago than to drive 1 time a week to SIUC and back.

Non-stop (with me driving): Jacksonville, Florida to Chattanooga, Tennessee... 8.5 hours
With driver rotations: Miami, Florida to North Sioux City, South Dakota... around 30 hours or so

Had a rather unhealthy diet of Hardee's and Sonic's...

The longest i've done is Munich-London but I've done that three times in the last year.

Most recent was on Sunday where we did the trip from Munich-Dunkerque ferry in under 8 hours thanks to some autobahn driving! and that was the route via luxembourg!

Its about 600 miles and here is the route. its much longer but you benefit from cheap diesel in Lux.

I did ORD-DAB and back many times alone straight through. Around 1250 miles in 16-17hrs.

Have done also ORD-Keystone/Breckenridge, Colorado many times straight through. Just a tad shy of DAB-ORD.

In a rotation with my dad without stopping we did Anchorage-Chicago in our RV once. That was about 3900 miles / 6300km. Im pretty sure I hold the record here for a rotation drive with 1 other person nonstop.

Oh dude I feel bad for you. When my gf used to go to U of I @ Champaign I tried to fly into IND (even went to BMI once or twice on FL) but many times it was ORD/MDW and I had to feel the pain on I-57 for just about 1.5 hours. Hands down it is the most BORING interstate ive ever been on apart maybe from I-80 in Nebraska. So bad I always rented a car with sat radio and listened to Canadian Comedy channel

Phoenix Arizona to Parsippany New Jersey was the longest drive - did it in 52 hours. Phoenix to Kansas City all in one very very long day in a new VW Jetta sedan.....

I once did Reading, in southern England, to Berlin in one stint. Nearly fell asleep in the summer heat. I also only took two albums so it was a VERY repetitive drive... though I do know them very well by now...

When I was a kid, we hit all the aviation boneyards in Arizona from Tuscon right up to Kingman and most airfields in between. 2100 miles in 6 days  Made just that more difficult by my dad having to spend 3 days in the Arizona Heart Hospital because he had 2 fits on our first full day.

With me driving, 2 hours. That's how long a lesson is

2003 Kingston - Fargo....took 25 hours with no rest and 4 fuel stops, i think it was around 1200 miles.
2009 Kingston - PEI.....16 hours and just over 900 miles.

Needless to say i won't be travelling that far by road anytime soon!

Washington D.C. to Jacksonville, FL with stops in Virginia Beach, VA, Laurinburg-Maxton Airport, SC (aircraft boneyard) and Savannah, GA. (aviation museum) Took about 12 hours total.

Longest drive in Japan was from my house in Misawa to Yokota AB (Tokyo area) in 9 hours, going 120-140 km/h leaving early Saturday morning and coming back Sunday. Japanese expressways speed limits are equivalent to 50-60 mph and some places, around 40 mph. The distance is roughly 350 miles or so.

About 260 yards for me. I'm getting old.

As far as my longest car drives, I suppose around a half-million miles by now. Of course I had many stops along the way

Apart from driving my lady crazy on a daily basis, I would say AMS-GOT. It's about 1000 km (+/- 622 miles) and takes about 11 hours to cover. When crossing the border over to Germany you can step on it as it's autobahn all the way up Denmark.

I really don't like driving long distances. Anything over 500 km I'd rather fly. I have once taken the bus from Rotterdam to Salou, which is 1600 km. Only stopping for short breaks. That was truly horrible, never again! The farthest I have driven is Rotterdam to Disneyland Paris, about 450 km. That was long enough for me. I've done that three times.

The past couple of years, we would routinly do San Rafael, California to Gresham, Oregon: 650 miles. Depending on the time of year, it would take us 10 to 12 hours. Back in the day, I had a friend who attended University of Idaho. A couple of times, I went from Burns, Oregon (where I lived at the time) to there and back. That was about 370 miles (he lived out of Moscow a ways) but it took FOREVER to get there, since there are no freeways between the two points. One other drive I took out of Burns, just for funsies, was straight south along Steens Mountain to Winnemucca, up to Boise and back to Burns. No motels tops, just food and fuel. I don't remember how long it took, but Mapquest says it was about 680 miles. I remember it was dark from Winnemucca to Boise.

UGHHHHH I HATE car rides longer than like, 3 hours. I cannot stand them! I feel so yucky. My longest car ride was with family 12 years ago when I was ten, and we drove to Florida from Canada. We didn't stop, so it was 24 hours straight! WORST EVER! It never ended. NEVER AGAIN! Then, on the way home, I had Burger King a few hours before leaving Florida, and it was extremely funky tasting and I remember asking my dad if something was up with it. In the middle of the night in Georgia, I began barfing. I did this the entire way home, every half hour, and for three days after arriving home since it was food poisoning. BRUTAL. Airplanes are the way to go!

Maybe not as long as some of you cross-country haulers, but here's some of my long drives

May 1989:

From Marblehead, MA to Virginia Beach, VA; about 595 miles one-way. 11-to-12 hour drive (including rest stops) in my dark blue 1985 Mercury Grand Marquis sedan (what I owned at the time). Encountered a nasty rain storm along southbound US 13 just after crossing into Maryland. The rain was pouring down w/such intensity, that the wipers at its fastest speed stopped at one point. We (my older brother was with me at the time) eventually pulled over at a nearby Buger King lot until the weather calmed down.

March 1995:

From Secane, PA (near Philly) to Toledo (Point Place section), OH; 535 miles one-way. 10-hour one-way drive (includes rest stops) in a rented dark green 1995 Lincoln Town Car. Was attending my grandfather's funeral w/my older brother. We alternated driving between rest stops.

March 2006:

From Nashville, TN (near BNA) to Woodstock, VA (just off I-81); 503 miles one-way. 10 to 12 hour drive (includes rest stops) in a U-Haul moving van (late 90s/early 2000s Ford E-series chassis). Day one of moving my father from Nashville to Sturbridge, MA. I did all the driving.

From Woodstock, VA to Sturbridge, MA; about 471 miles one-way. 9-to-10 hour drive one-way (including rest stops). Day two of moving my father from Nashville to Sturbridge. I did all the driving.

Yeah it really sucks! Two hours of torture from Chicago to Champaign and then it hits you (well at least in my case) that there are 3 more to go... sigh..

And its not like I have my former A4 or my gf's S4. I have a 93 Saab which I cant really push that much. Love the car though.

I have been thinking about flying too, but the only service i know of is out of Marion,IL to St. Louis to Chicago for like $300

Really sucks IMO. I should start up a charter. Imagine not driving or sitting in a train for 8 hours!!! Now only if It was cost effective..

I drove from Johnstown Pennsylvania to San Diego California in 2 days. Left PA at 0700 Saturday morning and arrived in CA Monday morning between 0700 and 0800.

Slept the whole day in my barracks room after arriving

Interestingly that can be done with just two interstates. I-17 and I-10.

1593 miles. I co-drove with a friend from Sunderland to Benidorm with one rest stop of 2 hours. It took around 33 hours in total, including the whopping 12 minutes in the tunnel and a wait to get through the tunnel of 2 hours as we were too early, getting lost when we tried to get away from the tunnel, bypassing Paris and trying to find petrol stations which took cash in the middle of the night. It was an experience but never ever again.

Denver to Hill City, SD. It's only ~450 miles, but it took about 5.5 hours and there is NOTHING and no tries to hide the nothing through Southeastern Wyoming dear lord....I thought the world had ended...

My longest drive was from Exeter to Glasgow. (443 miles) Took over 7 hours but was quite enjoyable.

I'm considering driving down to Spain at some point.
