Gas-Only Credit Card?

Wed Feb 10, 2010 7:22 am

I have good credit but as a student there isn't much that sits on my credit (mortgage, etc) but because of some identity theft issues, my credit card was closed. Now that everything is squared away, I'm being given the option of getting my Chase credit card again.

Doing a little research to see what I put on the card the most, I was only charging gas.

So, I know that Shell and Chevron offer credit cards in their name, but are there any cards offered by gas stations that are for gas only. A house card I guess you could say. I know there are fleet cards and my dad has in addition to his Amex from work, an M&E card from MasterCard, but I'm just a student who charges a couple hundred dollars worth of gas.

Chevron, Shell, and 76 are the primary stations here in the Bay Area.

Thanks!!

You can get the Shell personal card which I have. Aside from just using it for gas, you could also use it in the Shell station to buy anything else. (except lottery ofcourse).

I find it very convenient.

Their online account system is freaking amazing as well.

Please expand if you will.

Again, it's ONLY for gas and merch. inside of Shell stations? Only accepted at Shell?

Other than people with Fleet vehicles I often wonder why people have these cards since they have to restrict themselves to one gas chain. Unless that particular chain is always the cheapest and you fill up at it only I would just get a regular credit card with cash back.

I dont understand why for example you would not get a Discover Open Road card where in the first $250 spent on gas in a month youd get around 5c discount (figure 2.59 gas) and around 2.5-3c on past $250. Plus you are not restricted to shell gas stations...

The Shell Gas Saver card according to the website is only 2c per gallon...not only is it restrictive it gives less bonus than a Discover card. Doesnt make any sense.

Online account management is very simple and easy to use. It should be a model for every other company. Thats all i was getting at.

And yes, as far as I know the card is only for shell stations. I have never tried it at any other, so i could be wrong.

Does it carry a major logo like MasterCard or Visa?

Wouldnt it just be easier if you looked here:

http://www.shell.us/home/content/usa...ard/nonflash_shell_saver_card.html

Use google, it takes 2 seconds at most.

The link you put up is for a debt-like card from Shell. If you click on the same site for their credit cards, it does not say if it is exclusive to their stations or if it's accepted everywhere.

I'm aware of the wonders of google and normally do ample research before posting here.

Oh and .02/gal is a joke. Big savings of $00.23.

Thanks anyways.

Not sure any of these stations are in the Bay area but here are some others (which I have):

Exxon-Mobil
BP-Amoco
Sunoco

It's usually easier to get approved for a gas-only card than for a conventional credit card; of course the main caveat being that the gas-only card tends to have higher interest rates.

There was actually a running gag on this in an old (1st Season) Married With Children episode where Peg would taunt Al saying that he couldn't even get approved for a gas card (after being rejected for other credit cards). It was the episode where their dog, Buck, actually gets a credit card.

Worth noting: gas cards w/a VISA or Master Card logo (which can be used anywhere that accepts VISA or Master Card) have only been around for about 15 to 18 years. Prior to that ALL gas station cards were of the gas-company-only variety.

I got mine when i still owned the A4. Since it was tuned, the software required 93. I have always used V power when i had that car. Never once filled it with any thing less.

BTW, Shell stations are so abundant in Chicago and the surrounding area that you will literally never run out of gas.

So thats why i used it, and i love shell.

If it's a credit card, it's accepted everywhere...

I also don't see what the advantage of a gas-only card would be. Why restrict yourself to one station?

I just don't charge anything else. Why have it if you don't need it? Temptations like these are what have gotten many people in trouble these days.

I like the look of the Shell card. I've always gone to Chevron but there are almost just as many Shell stations here in California. Gas is notoriously expensive around here, if you find cheap gas it's going to be 5-15miles away and maybe 5-10 cents less. The time it would take to get there and get gas isn't worth the savings. However, cash operations in the city are drastically cheaper than those that take credit.

How can it be accepted everywhere if its not a Visa/MasterCard logo?

Probably works somewhere else like some car repair shop at best + Shell. Hence why I believe them to be worthless.

Because you get 2x of a discount vs using the Shell card?

I use the Costco Amex which gives 3% cash back and I try to fill up at the Costo gas station which is usually 15-20 cents cheaper than any other gas stations (and you still get the additional 3% cashback). On average I save $3-$5 per fill up at Costco without the cashback.

Inquire with the bank if you can have a restriction placed on your card to limit the types of purchases you make. We do it at work on our corporate cards, so theoretically it should be possible for a personal card.

Not necessarially. Well... I don't know if any of them are open to single users (aka a fleet of one) but there are several "Fleet" cards that are reasonably widely accepted... Voyager and FuelMan being the two that come to mind. When I worked for the University, we could use the Voyager cards in every gas station I ever came across. (There are some limitations that can be configured, e.g. fuel only, fuel and oil only, etc.)

I'm not trying to sound preachy, but why not get a regular credit card and just not use it for anything else?
