I Have Failed As A Dad

Fri Feb 12, 2010 5:33 am

My 4 year old sons favourite car brand is FIAT. I don't know how he came to this remarkable decision, we have never owned a FIAT, are never likely to own a FIAT and don't know anyone who has a FIAT. What can I do to cure him of this sickness, I feel like such a bad parent.

Get him every fast and the furious movie. Buy him a bunch of car games. It's probably the only thing to do.

Four-year-olds tend to be into Noddy, and a Fiat is a bit like a Noddy car.

Give him a few years and expose him to a bit of judicious hooning about in Subarus or Bimmers or whatever you're into. Things will work out.

I loved tractors when I was four.

Uhm no. I think he's a better off liking Fiats than worshiping rice rockets

I will admit, as much as I hate them nowadays, I used to like lifted trucks and SUVs when much younger.

Of course that died away when I started driving a a few and realized how crappy they actually are.

Are you in Auckland?? I'll take him out in my Renaultsport - which is a step up from most Fiats, then my friend can take him out in a 750bhp skyline and then go from there. Baby steps though...

No you haven't failed at all.

This is the way of the future I feel. Small is good and Fiats have come along way.

Beats driving some enormous yank tank, or as I read somewhere a Jap rice rocket !!

Your son likes sensible, cheap, reliable and decent looking cars? You mean he will never waste his money on overpriced and overrated transport?

...Oh, the humanity...

If I was still in my early 20s and didn't have kids, I really wouldn't mind driving around in one if these Puntos, especially with an Abarth badge on it. Very nice looking car.
And the Panda is smarter and more fun than ever, a brillant and economical little city car.

But I'm afraid that by the time your son is old enough to drive he'll be lucky if he can get his hands on anything other that a bland and gutless Ipod with wheels that doesn't make a noise and is driven with a joystick...

Four years old, eh? This should pretty simple to resolve given his age, and taking advantage of a young boy's animosity towards the opposite sex.

1) Tell him that this is a car for girls. He wouldn't want to be seen driving a girl's car, right?

2) Let him process that for a few minutes.

3) Then show him a muscle car of your liking, and tell him that it's what boys drive.

So, it ends up like this:

Girls are yucky. Only girls drive Fiats. Therefore, Fiats are yucky.

FIAT sounds funny when a child that age says it - or even a 40 year old. The sounds resonate and kind of sound like words I hope he is not allowed to say.

Don't worry, he will see plenty of Fiats in the future, and certainly decide he does not like them.

Of course by then, he will be saying those other words.

Agreed. Audi might make cars that are great in any number of ways, but Audis, the sedans in particular, are some of the most bland and generic-looking cars on the road. As AerorobNZ so succinctly put it, "fast Q cars, but completely forgettable to look at". I suspect many people consider Audis "beautiful" because they know what sort of performance various Audi models are capable of, but that doesn't make Audis visually appealing to an uninformed casual observer.

Make it simple: Book a flight to Germany, rent a very expensive car (e.g. a Ferrari), take him for a ride on unrestricted sections of any Autobahn, and convince him that an ordinary Fiat can't do these speeds.

You let him watch the movie "Cars" didn't you?

I have a simple solution thanks to one of the great thespians on our time, Mr. Burt Renoylds.

Rent "Cannonball Run" and after watching that watch, "Smokey and the Bandit".

He will be into black Trans-Am's in no time

My parents had one of those. It lasted for quite a while, but when it caught fire in the immediate vicinity of a gas station the attendant there didn't even want to lend us a fire extinguisher. Apparently risking having thousands of liters of gasoline blow up in smoke in a very heavily-transited road at rush hour is an acceptable price to pay to watch one of those things burn.
