She seems vehemently anti-immigration, why is she becoming an immigrant?

I and most Australians want our immigration policy radically reviewed and that of multiculturalism abolished. I believe we are in danger of being swamped by Asians. Between 1984 and 1995, 40 % of all migrants coming into this country were of Asian origin. They have their own culture and religion, form ghettos and do not assimilate. Of course, I will be called racist but, if I can invite whom I want into my home, then I should have the right to have a say in who comes into my country. A truly multicultural country can never be strong or united. The world is full of failed and tragic examples, ranging from Ireland to Bosnia to Africa and, closer to home, Papua New Guinea. America and Great Britain are currently paying the price.

So she decides to become an Asian immigrant in another country? The UK doesn't need extremist nutters like her.

It is interesting that having cited the UK as one of the countries "currently paying the price"of multiculturalism" she has now chosen to live there . It is unfortunate for the UK that she has British Citizenship through her father so you cant turn her away at immigration . Still , your loss is definitely Australias gain .

How will the BNP react to her, given that she is really invading their country?

Rubbish - as long as she isn't here.  Now that she's going - she'd better not come back.   Perhaps if you don't like her, you can send her to France, I'm sure Jean-Marie Le Pen and our dear Pauline would get along very nicely.   They both sing the same silly tune.

As for her comments on assimilation - she's basically playing to a certain voter demographic (while she was still a politician).

Read above.

She was reasonably popular in Australia, she said a lot of things people wanted to say (eg other pollies) but didn't have the guts to say them !

But... I wonder what visa she is going to use, a work visa offers talented individuals the opportunity to live and work in a range of industries in the UK, don't think she has talent, the Working Holiday Visa program allows 18 -30 year olds from participating countries a once in a lifetime opportunity to work and experience life in the UK for up to 2years, she's well past that age. A Business visa allows successful business people to settle and develop new or existing businesses in the UK, think they have enough fish and chip shops. Maybe she should start a curry shop..hmmm...

Read the post Springbok747, She has dual citizenship, English/Australian doesn't need a Visa.  Wink

Yeah I know about that, I was just being my usual sarcastic self.

I don't see what was so gutsy about her, she was just another untruthful, untrustworthy politician like most of the rest of them. I hold her in the same regard as I do John Howard, Tony Abbott, Kevin Andrews and Phillip Ruddock.

Meanwhile the really decent politicians who don't make a lot of noise and outlandish comments, but deep down really care a lot about what happens, they get nothing for their efforts. That's me being serious.

While there needs to be sound and proper regulation of immigration to prevent various problems, some go too far, to the point of wanting to send people back, especially of Asian herritage or in more recent years, from Islamic or very poor countries. In the USA, we highly restricted Asian, especially Chinese for about 100 years to the mid-1960's, yet 1000's of Chinese immigrants in the mid-1800's built much of our railroads in the Western states. Over the last 30 years, we have had a huge problem of illegal immigation from Mexico and Central America, but these were the only ones who do many dirtest work jobs, especially with agricultural products and in more recent years construction, resturant kitchens, meatcutting doing the jobs too low paying or 'beneath' citizens.

While many rail against 'multiculturism', living in an area of the USA, in northern New Jersey near NY City, I am constantly amazed at how the general mix of cultures and faiths can get along and contribute to a richer country. The other day I had a medical test/procedure done in a local hospital in New Jersey. The people in that area of the hospital there for procedures, the staff and doctors were a UN mix of Polish, Italian, Asian Indian, African American, African-Carribbean, a variety of Hispanic cultures, a range of Jewish faith persons, Asian including Chinese and so on.

I do think those like the woman that is the subject of this article are far too narrow minded, and excessive about their fears of immigrants. Such fears is more about losing their 'superior' position and access to power in their country, becoming the minority.

Yep, that is not a kind way to repay the Mother Country for her long and selfless interest in her colony.

Steady there Commodore, she got votes, but she was up against a number of other rather unpopular pollies, so her actual popularity might be better judged by her later performances - PHUT.

There are always lots of things people want to say (I would like a not so quiet word with that idiot Garrett just at the moment) but she did not have the brains to make the complaints into any sort of a coherent sentence let alone a policy (shades of Palin anyone???).

Slightly OT, but how did anyone else score Tanner v Joyce (a latter day Pauline) in QandA? I ran it about 7 : 2. But I am a kindly old soul. Any offers??

Yes, this quote from her is truly laughable. Whatever problems the US may have, it is pretty clear that it gained the superpower status and cultural influence it has precisely by immigration and a multi-cultural model. But don't let the facts get in the way of a good xenophobic rant, Pauline...

Hmm... like the Mail needed any help in the matter!

I'd like to be able to say that the people of this country would have no time for a miserable, bitter woman like her, but I fear she will be a popular figure amongst a sector of the population who have been led to believe that immigration is the root of all our problems.

I don't trust politicians, full-stop. Regardless of which side they come from. But having been around those circles for a quite a while, you discover one or two that are really honest, hard-working people who really care about what happens.

Interesting comment. I think he picked that as his only hope with Joyce - you will remember him chipping Joyce to point out that Barnaby was not moderating the program - YET. The really interesting thing is he sort of managed, whereas he could not have "handled" Pauline in that way. Did Pauline ever appear in a multi-"talent" interview? I cannot remember one.

I think she will sink nearly without trace, it is a bigger pond. And GDB, you would not want her chips if she did them as well as she organized a party. Even the Party Party (Aus Dems in case you forgot Gnashing Despot Spoiler) organized itself better.

It was a bit tough though throwing her (Pauling not Gnashing!!) in jail. Where that happens, I feel the person who organized the stunt should spend time in jail - was not Abbott A involved?????

Interesting article in todays SMH, saying the BNP welcomes her to England. Nick Griffin is quoted also as saying that she would not be noted as an "immigrant sponger" if she moved to Britain, well lets wait and see about that ...

I actually enjoyed the comedy she brought to Aussie politics. In a way, what she said about multiculturalism getting out of hand was correct... it was and probably something that needs to be addressed somehow and eventually, but likely not a priority. Wait... I'm not Australian... I was in fact at one stage, an immigrant-resident of Australia... why am I saying this? As a former Sydneysider...

When I was told off for referring to myself as "Indonesian" by someone who said, I should use "Asian" instead, I thought something was wrong...

When I can spend a week at university without saying a word of English (only listened to English for that week), something was wrong...

When I got people giving me strange faces when I opened my mouth (and out came the English accent), whom later told me they find it disturbing that a non-commonwealth origin Asian can have an English accent is disturbing... something was wrong.

When I had an Indonesian immigrant handling settlements on a trading account deliberately wrong (ie: inverting the exchange rate... oh yeah, he made about A$10,000 to his bank from the cheat over a few months), who then said to my Greco-Aussie broker "my fellow Indonesians are all thieves", and I ended up with the bank asking me to close the account because the bank feared the accounts settler b**t*rd would play the race card in court if he was fired, so they decided to throw out me, their client instead... something was wrong...

When I had a legal dispute with a company over certain parts of the contract they cheated on, which I had sent a lawyer to threaten to sue, to which they settled, but with my lawyer saying, "they were surprised that an Asian could understand the details of the contract", and was told that the whole conspiracy was the idea of the 2 guys I dealt with before (to which one was an Asian immigrant)... something was wrong...

When I had to spend 3 hours in a bank to open a non-AUD account in Chinatown because the caucasian who first served me said, "I'll let my colleague handle this", only for a Cantonese to appear trying to speak to me in Cantonese, and upon realizing that I was not Cantonese handed me over to his mainland Chinese colleague, only for that person to realize that I could not speak mandarin so he handed me over to the Vietnamese guy, who in turn realized I could not understand Vietnamese and handed me over to the caucasian again, only for him to try and hand me off to someone else, regardless of me saying I am fluent in English and getting the response of "but it's not right" (so I left only to be chased by the manager saying he could open the account for me in 5 mins), I thought Australia had gone mad! Something was wrong! (I actually ended up opening the account somewhere near Australia Sq. with the Bank of China, being served by an old mainland Chinese lady who tried to speak English, but had the explaining documents (in English) read along with me)

When I can carry out an English conversation with foreign students instead of the local Asian immigrant students (who either, could not speak English despite being born in Australia, or speaks perfect Aussie English but would not talk to "fellow Asians"), I thought, something was wrong.

When I was stopped by the police for speeding down the New England Highway (I needed a piss badly and somehow the thought of pissing by the roadside wasn't a good idea), whilst trying to getaway from the "immigrant filled cities" for a weekend, only to have the policeman actually trying to carry out a conversation in Indonesian... I concluded it was time to go home...

In the end, I thought Australia had gone mad and that Pauline Hanson, despite being a stoopid lunatic, and I have a common grievance on Australia, I decided to go back to politically incorrect Indonesia.

Despite all the above, I enjoyed my time in Australia, although I had a hard time finding "what is it to be Australian for a non-Chinese/Vietnamese/Korean/Indian immigrant", it's a country I look forward to visit again, but only for business and holidays...   I just found Australia to be confusing in some parts, and tried to be too politically correct. What I viewed as "sweeping the immigration and multiculturalism issue under the racist carpet", wasn't for me, despite me being the one who should actually take advantage of such a situation.

And with...

Quoting 777236ER (Reply 1):
A truly multicultural country can never be strong or united.

That was where I started laughing...

But then... one of the reasons why I left the UK and went to Australia was because the "religious fanatics" from a certain part of the world decided it was fun to terrorize me... (ie: immigration related)... and I find it absolutely hilarious that Pauline Hanson decided to move to the UK...

Quoting TheCommodore (Reply 20):

If Hitler turned up on the street tomorrow, they'd welcome him...
If Sarah Palin turned up on their doorstep tomorrow saying "I can see Russia from my house", they'd probably choose her as their party leader!
