Need Computer Help!

Sat Feb 27, 2010 5:42 pm

I just recently got a nasty spyware program called xp antivirus pro.

It freezes you out of internet explorer and gives you annoying pop ups every minute telling you your computer is infected. It also takes hold of your programs and dosen't let you run or open anything. Well now I've managed to delete the virus but it screwed up my system so that now I can't open anything without getting a message that the .exe file is not found. If I want to start a program it gives me the open with box

Can anybody tell me what to do ?

Since the virus is gone, I think you could do a system restore to a point before you contracted the virus. But don't hold me to that

You can't open which objects exactly? Documents or software? From the desktop or by the menus?

If you know the date when you were infected, you could use System Restore and go back to a date before the infection.

(Your picture shows that the association with .TXT plain text documents is missing. That, alone, can be fixed easily)

Can't open that either. Only things that work fine are txt and pdf files. Control panel can't be opened, video files can't be played, games can't be run and internet explorer dosen't work. I think the problem is that the virus took control of these functions so when i deleted that it also screwed up my sysem. So is there any way to reinstall or reboot windows entirely without losing all my files ?

I found this quote on another site and I think it explains the problem better

''well, i was tryin to delete a virus on my registry and i deleted my whole exe regestry''

This is my issue. The damm spyware disabled all my my programs to force me to buy its stupid fake software and when i deleted it all my exe files that it took over were deleted as well .

Start System Restore by the following:

Click Start - Run. In the box write:

%SystemRoot%#System32#restore#rstrui.exe

(I had to use the # instead of the backslash character, the forum software eats it. )

And click OK. This should give you the system restore. Your .EXE files are very likely there, but the links to them is missing. If restoring will not work, you can reinstall XP on top of the old one as a repair installation (requires a [same version] XP installation CD).
