Senate Passes $10 Billion Jobless Benefits

Wed Mar 03, 2010 6:30 am

Great news everyone, there has now been a 30 day extension on filing deadlines for unemployment benefits that had expired on 02-28-10. I can't believe that a few Republican senators tried to block the bill from passing, how ignorant and coward of them to do that during this tough economy that we are in. Well I finally got a job thank God, but I still care about the others out there who dont, so I am happy that the Senate passed this bill. President Obama will sign the bill into law Wednesday morning 03-03-10 and the funds will be available right away. No more worries for those out of unemployment benefits. Check out the link for further information. God dont you just love this country!!!!  http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/03/...2/jobless.benefits.bill/index.html

Sorry folks, the extension is not 30 days, pardon me for the mistake, the unemployment benefits deadline extensions are until December 31, 2010, even better than the 30 days. I also heard that the unemployment rate will remain close to 10% the entire year and it wont drop to around 5% in about 7 years, thats crazy  Wow!

Frankly I dont see what the point of these endless extensions.
In some states now benefits will be available for 99 months now -- basically a two year government hand-out.

I'd much rather see other job creating incentives such as continued tax cuts that encorages consumer and business consumption which in turn will grow jobs versus this endless government subsidy for people to sit at home.

Well I mean its going to take time and plenty of patients before the economy starts turning back around. Because the unemployment rate is so damn high, people need income to support their necessities or else with so many people out of unemployment checks, this economy will dip right back into a severe recession. People are seeing light at the end of the tunnel, and as far as jobs being created, I believe the process is a little slow, but we'll see what happens. Yes, unemployment now runs 99 months, like in my state of California that suffers the worst 12.7% unemployment rate

We all would love to see that. But without:

there would be a hell of a lot of people standing at the top of off-ramps holding signs. There would be a hell of a lot of people living in cardboard boxes.

My big issue with all of this is a right-winger Jim Bunning decided that was the last straw in spending. If he cared so passionately about government waste, which is a big deal and an important cause, why bring up the subject on the backs of people who truly need help? Why not target government waste in earmarks? Why not target government waste in the Patrot Act? I just wonder how many earmarks he has gotten for his state. I wonder how much government waste he has taken or created.

If nobody can buy what you sell, you don't create jobs, no matter what tax cuts you get, it's as simple as that.

Because earmarks are peanuts next to wealth transfer (read: Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid etc.). Don't take my word for it, check the budget.

Taking money away from the people who would hire (or spend on stuff leading the makers of that stuff to hire) and giving it to people for not working is pure idiocy. It is an effective double-tap in the head of employment and productivity: you are both taxing away the job opportunity (taking away capital and product demand when you soak the "rich") and making it the (former) worker's job to remain unemployed.

I can't believe the Democrats would pass a bill the says "any spending must be payed for". Then two weeks later pass a $10B bill "without any provisions for paying for it".

By the way it wasn't a few Republican senators, it was one senator and he was actually for the bill, just wanted it payed for.

Its passed now and retroactive to the end of February, so no one lost any benifits. But the taxpayers are $10B more in debt.

Hey I have an idea --
Instead of endless unemployment benefits, how about require these folks to do some work for society? Can be picking up trash on the side of the road, painting over graffiti in their communities or whatever a couple days per week.

If we are going be paying for these people, let’s get some value in return for society.

They didnt block it ... they just made the leadership pay for it.... wow thats radical insanity nowadays. All they were asking is that the money be on the books to pay for it.

Man our country is really circling the bowl .... unbelievable .

Good idea, but we need to understand the demands (especially time demands) of apprenticeships as well as the costs.

We blew a major opportunity after Katrina when apprenticeships in the building trades could have been paid for by the Federal Government to get unemployed/welfare residents who had been evacuated. If we had made that investment the costs would have been recovered by now.

Not a problem there for me. That's like the WPA in the 30's. I've seen sidewalks with WPA stamped into them, just to let people know.

Well it looks like the job that I wanted wasnt really what I wanted, there are too much safety concerns working for the railroad company BNSF and Eagle Intermodal in southern California. I am not going to risk my body parts getting injured or even killed for $10.50/hr or whatever the pay was. Thank you Obama for signing the unemployment extension bill into law, because I am about to run out of my 2nd extension and ready to roll into the Fed-Ed 3rd extension of up to 20 weeks. I will have to keep on praying forever and eventually get a job very soon! God is great!!

Never had a job in my life that there wasn't a chance of getting killed or injured and some were for a lot less than S10.50 and hour. You should be denied un-employment benfits if you refused to work.

My girlfriend recently moved in with me. She is just amazed at the number of jobs here, and how it seems employers are hunting people more than the other way around. She just moved from Grand Rapids, MI, where unemployment is at 11.3% to Bismarck, ND, where it is 3.2%.

So join the military - good enlistment bonus, good pay, free medical and you don't need to worry about fashions - they will always keep you in style.

Sign up to be a cook and you probably won't get shot at. After 20 years you get to retire on half pay with a ton of other benefits. If you're bright the military will even send you to college so you can be an officer and make a lot more money.
