Sampras - Agassi Rivalry Reaches "new Low"

Mon Mar 15, 2010 3:34 am

The Pete Sampras - Andre Agassi rivalry is one of the greatest rivalries in tennis ever, but it went a little too far in a charity match between Sampras, Agassi, Federer and Nadal. Was this just friendly jibing or did it go too low? I think there was a lot of tension in the air, and even the crowd seemed to be a little tense after they kept volleying.

Maybe a bit of tension there, but mostly just part of the show.

Judged on the responses, I'm probably wrong! The ESPN coverage on it didn't help...

Hell no! I was laughing my *ss off! It's always nice to hear that kind of "friendly" trash-talking - especially from two guys who have so much history together.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

What was Agassi meaning with the "no money" reference? Clearly referring to something. I thought it was always Andre that was short of cash due to his Vegas trips?

Looks like a good bit of banter to me.

From the video description:

"I don't have any money," Agassi said, using his left hand to continue rifling through that pocket. "No, wait, I've got a dollar!"

In a biography released late last year, Agassi told a story in which a valet confirmed to him that Sampras had tipped him a dollar after they had eaten at the same restaurant, an establishment that was said to be in Indian Wells.

That Pete is cheap. I think Pete took that way too hard. Andre was classy about it when he realized it got to him.

Vegas trips? Andre lives in Vegas, and has most of his life. As for being short of cash, not a chance. Not only did Agassi earn more than $30 million in prize money, but he put up many years of over $25 million per year in endorsements, along with fewer but still significant millions in his early career (photographers will remember his long time deal with Canon) as well as post-retirement. Remember too that his wife, Steffi Graf, is quite wealthy as well, having been more successful than Agassi and Sampras put together.

I have heard that Sampras, while still very comfortable, is not nearly as well off. A big part of that is the fact that he basically forbade his wife from having any sort of significant acting career after they married, as well as the fact that he never had Andre's personality. That might be what got to Pete.
