Israeli Suggests Steps To Aid Peace Talks

Fri Mar 19, 2010 6:08 am

This ought to be good, let see what they come up with this time round.

Although Netanyahu lips remain tightly sealed as to what these "steps" exactly are. I wounder if that's because he's biting his tongue !!

They have made a mistake, I don't understand why we should be thankful they are considering taking 'steps'. The international community should be pressuring Israel not to build those 1600 houses. The announcement already triggered violence. And the more worrying part is the violence we don't see yet - the potential terrorists that are given continuous reason to hate Israel and truly in some situations reason to hate the US and even all other parties who have the power to pressure Israel but don't use it. We don't want to see 9/11 again, and frankly everyday that passes Israel brings us closer to the disaster. My humble opinion says that the US should start taking a few steps away from the Jewish state.
There will come a time when you believe everything is finished - that will be the beginning.

Yeh sure. It is just a smoke screen so he can cool the American anger. Nothing will come grom this. He is just buying time. Wait till Mr. Liberman open his mouth and all hope will vanish again.

In the absence of statements as to what they are perhaps the world will conclude they could be any actions of his government. Let us see what they include since the statement was released.
At least 12 wounded in IAF missile strike on Gaza
Israeli F16 warplanes carried out two successive airstrikes on the southern Gaza Strip on Friday night, wounding at least 12 people, in response to earlier rocket attacks, witnesses and medics said.

So bombing Gaza is on the menu, and those F16s might as well be carrying the US star for the signal that gives to the neutral itermediary message that Hills must be trying to send to the Palestinians.
Even though it was Israel who sparked the most recent crisis over Jerusalem, it is not the only player adding fuel to the fire. The behavior of the Obama administration - with senior officials trying to outdo each other in public reprimands of Israel - is reminiscent of the intentionally tough stance taken on the Netanyahu government a year ago. Nor are the Palestinians missing the opportunity to fan the flames.

True, the prime minister played into their hands on the matter of proposed construction in the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood, and Jerusalem's mayor is still at it, but the Palestinian Authority is playing a very dangerous game - perhaps the most dangerous of it all - over Jerusalem and specifically the Temple Mount.

Well no surprises there, but not really any steps either.
Israel policy allows settlers to rampage unchecked
One must admit that the current diplomatic process between Israel and the Palestinians is not about reaching a peace deal - each side is convinced that the other is either not serious or incapable.

Well one could never criticise Haaretz for ignoring the obvious even it that is not a popuar course.

There is another article on Egypt and regime change and Israel. For a moment one wonders if the ghost of Saddam might be in Egypt suggesting regime change for Israel and not Mubarek viewing his own mortality. That would be a step but not one being pushed by Netanyahu I suppose.

Israeli officials have confirmed that United States President Barack Obama is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, amid growing tension over Israel's recent announcement to build 1,600 new housing units in East Jerusalem, Fox news reported on Friday.

Now that is a step, wonder if he comes back with knees intact. I do hope that Mr Rudd and Pres SBY do not get a whiff of this news as while they might have been OK with the Pres leaving them hanging re his visit over health, doing them over to pour oil on yet another Israeli frolic might put a little more strain on the bonds of undying friendship between Rudd and Israel - we are still trying to find how Aus passports turned up in Dubai without their ostensible owners and in the hands of a bunch of assassins.

Maybe we should advertise in NY for our next PM, this guy seems to have his feet a bit more on the ground over this issue at least than Rudd.
The leading Reform rabbi in the United States on Thursday urged Israel to cease construction in East Jerusalem, saying the diplomatic row between Israel and the United States has made this a difficult time for American Jewry.
Really all he needs to do if follow the good Rabbi's advice and he could save a trip to Washington. Will the US put on a spring snow storm to meet him? Or will the dogwood be in flower?

So two steps that I can find, bomb Gaza and then go to Washington. With the latter, the question will be, who will bully who.

Well now we know. Nothing of any use.....

"Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has ruled out any concession on the building of settlements in occupied East Jerusalem, despite international pressure.

"Mr Netanyahu said he had written to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to remove any doubt about the issue.

"He made the remarks hours before he left for Washington to address the influential pro-Israeli group, Aipac.

"He has been invited to meet President Barack Obama on Tuesday, indicating a possible thaw in relations."

This coud be relevant too. Looks like Obama is unwilling to 'trust' Israel with advanced weapons:-

"WASHINGTON — The United States has diverted a shipment of bunker-busters designated for Israel.

"Officials said the U.S. military was ordered to divert a shipment of smart bunker-buster bombs from Israel to a military base in Diego Garcia. They said the shipment of 387 smart munitions had been slated to join pre-positioned U.S. military equipment in Israel Air Force bases.

"This was a political decision," an official said."
