Tata Nano Cheap Car Really 'hot'!

Fri Mar 26, 2010 3:15 am

Apparently the new ultra cheap Tata Nano is having a high rate of catching on fire. This link is to an article about a car that recently went into flames.

A real bottleneck, you cant have a car this cheap and small and expect it to be very safe.

Per article:

""Safety has never been an issue with Tata cars," Ray added. "They are one of the safest cars on Indian roads.""

The worst is the old Sumo. If you are in the front seats, the shape of the dashboard guarantees that any accident will cause massive leg and pelvic damage to the front occupants, particularly the passenger.

It's still a lot safer than having a family of four pile on a motorcycle.

I do feel bad about this - this is a revolutionary project to bring the automobile to the masses. Let's hope they find out the root cause and fix it. Sadly, even MD11's catch on fire...

You guys missed the funniest part of the article. A CHAUFFEUR was initially driving!!!! What kind of person buys a Tata, the cheapest car on the planet, then has a Chauffeur drive it? I've heard of trickle down economic theory, but this is taking it to absurd levels.

It is very common in India. Middle-class families in India often have full-time servants. Since parking in India's major cities is often extremely difficult, it makes sense for you to have one of the servants drive you around and drop you off, and stay with the car so that he can move it around as needed.

The car obviously exploded of pride.

Lets be fair to Donkeys. Couple of points:

1. A Donkey does not spontaneously catch fire. It might fart, but that wont kill you (usually).
2. A Donkey does not reach speeds that are capable of killing you.
3. A Donkeys upholstery is much less plastic and actually "feels rich" compared to a Nano.
4. A Donkey does not even need a road, it will go wherever you tell it to go.

Winner: Donkey.

Thats also why Korean, Indian and Japanese cars are worthless in my eyes. In the end its either A) To copy another company and B) To make an appliance. Always was and always will be. I may not like a VW or I may not like a Saab but at least when I drive one and when I debate on the car I know it was dreamed up by someone who saw some vision for it and has some kind of soul and its distinct style. I feel more sentiment towards my toaster than I do to a Kia, which is something that is proven by the fact Ive never seen any Asian car on any kind of collectible or sentimental car auction in my life.

Not so sure about that. The 240Z and 260Zs are quite prized - unfortunately few remain.

Quite prized? I am looking now at a Z car website and I did a google search for these 2 cars for sale. Those cars go for $1000-$8000 to start in good condition.

Quite prized is a term id convey to something that gets consistently sold for more than a new Honda Civic.

Wasn't this a test vehicle......The fire was caused by a leaking fuel pipe....Right.
Don't believe everything the media says.

There are quite a few nanos in BOM......But they are not selling as hot cakes as the traffic scene & better models for higher prices exist.

Honestly, Id be more inclined to believe in what is written in the National Enquirer than what is deemed as a fact by any Indian car maker.

BTW, Ive driven a Tata Indica in Europe...made me want to buy a Yaris. If you know my views on that, youd know that in order for me to even ponder a Yaris continents would have to move and id have to crap golden eggs.

That being said....Asian cars catching on fire is SOP. Just look at Honda, just recalled some half million because a Fit BBQed a 2 year old child.

When I had to take my car to the dealership for warranty work, the dealer didn't have any loaner cars so they paid for a rental car from the nearby Enterprise rent a car. They gave me a Yaris. It was the worst piece of $h!t I ever drove. AMC put better quality into its cars than Toyota put into the Yaris. When I returned the car, I told the agent that the Yaris needed to be put back on the boat on its return trip to Japan. In the future I will refuse a Yaris from a rental car company even if it means paying extra.

Yeah..pretty much.

Back to the Tata...I guess the phrase "you get what you paid for" comes to mind.

Absolutely true. I will never buy an asian car. It could be the best car ever but having a badge of toyota kia or hyundai on my car would make me want to die.

Looks like the 'hot cakes' got a little too hot!

How is the Nano perceived Out There status-wise? Is it seen as a 'low-class' car because of it price or is it a 'respectable' entry-level brand?

Methinks they should rename it the Jaguar Nano....

Thats partially true.....not all want to be associated with a cheaper car.....
Hence there is no boom in sales in BOM atleast.

What does it matter when it was made? Comparable year model. Both equally terrible, one more than the other.

Wasnt the Tata Indica not even designed in India? Is my imagination running wild or didnt the Italians just put some new plastic and shuffle the lights on a Fiat Palio?

Maybe you are talking about the Rover City Rover? Anyways, you are still not answering the question, exactly which car did we copy?

... and duck you very well should! Let's just nip that idea in the bud... right now!

I can't say I'm exactly an expert on cars but Tata do seem to be doing a good job with Jaguar at the moment - though I've no idea how the finances are squaring up .

I guess what we can deduce is that Tata seem to be capable of maintaining a "wider range of quality" than a lot of other manufacturers.
