Firefox Keeps Crashing!

Wed Mar 31, 2010 9:26 am

Maybe you all can help me with this.

I am experiencing multiple crashes since I have uploaded the latest version of Firefox. I wonder why that is. Are any of you having the same problem? Does it come from the software itself that is not stable and may have some form of 'bug' in it?

It seems that every upgrade and new version seems to be worse than the preceeding one and more unstable.

What do you think?

This is way too many crashes. It is very bothersome. I send them crash reports and restore the windows but the crashes are happening way too many times. I am not sure what can be done to correct this. Any ideas or comments on your own Firefox crashing experiences and advice most welcome. Thank you.

I've noticed a lot of crashes with Firefox lately. It's not techically crashing, but I notice it will freeze for about 30 seconds, and then finally start going normal again. It will do this several times before I decide to close the program and relaunch it. Sometimes I have to actually do a system restart.

One of the things I downloaded was CCleaner from Filehippo.com. Cleans out your cache and registry and a bunch of other things at one time. Seems to keep things running smoothly. I usually clean it all out once a week.

While firefox with adblockplus is fantastic, it's not been very good about crashing on my Mac OR my PC, sadly. But, I'm still using it, and writing this using it.

Thank you for the hint on CCleaner. I looked for reviews. It seems to have very good rating.

I must get rid of these FF crashes. Seems that many people have been experiencing them with some of the latest versions. Every time they come up with something new and supposedly better, it seems to be worse than before!

Or you could start off by clearing your private data: Open Firefox ->Tools->Clear Private Data and if asked, select "delete all of my private data"

Perhaps your FF is being slowed down by too many cookies and temporary internet files.

Is the use of FF somehow tied to IE? I ask because I never use IE, yet when I run the cleaner, it always detects IE files. And actually, when I downloaded FF, I had a huge problem with it, because of Norton Anti-Virus on my PC. FF wouldn't run with Norton, and I found that Norton is a HUGE program that uses a lot of space and keeps growing as time goes on. I got rid of it, and I've had no issues with speed of my computer since. It used to take 3 min to start up my PC, and now it takes about as long as my Mac once I got rid of the program. The thing about getting rid of Norton, however, is that even if you run the Norton Un-Install program, it doesn't get rid of the entire thing. You have to find a 3rd party Norton remover, and I can't remember which one I used. However, it was free.

UAL I dont think that FF is tied to IE in any way but I am not an expert.

I have heard that you can call Symantec or email them and they will send you a program that completely removes norton antivirus. I've never liked norton antivirus anyway as it seems so incredibly heavy and drains your computer for resources a lot in my experience.

I always take that stuff out all the time. More than once a day. I am a bit fanatical about this type of cleaning.

I forgot to add that most crashed happened while I was uploading pictures of my last trip on Photobucket :- O - hopefully in preparation for a next trip report.

I switched over to Google Chrome a long time ago. It updates itself automatically, is very stable, and all I do is clear out the private data occasionally...very nice.

Ah yes, but do you get Ad Blocker Plus with that? I see absolutely NO ads on any webpage I visit. None on a.net either.

Also, google chrome isn't able to handle .cer files unlike IE and FF which are both capable of this, so if you have a digital signature, you can't use google chrome.

I was getting tired of these nasty FF crashes occurring every two minutes.
I did some research and got the answer. Apparently FF 3.6 does not like Windows XP SP3.

See here:

http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?t=243237

I did what they said - good resource there by the way - I went back to FF 5.9
Now I will have to see if the thing still crashes. Then I will have to install FF 3.5.

Interesting discussion. I have windows vista and was using IE8. Have now switched back to FireFox and am very happy with it. No crashes at all. Definitely not going back to IE anymore. I am considering downloading Chrome. What are the benefits of Chrome over FireFox?

It has to be something with your computer, I've never had problems with FF.

Quoting UAL747 (Reply 4):

No, not in any way or form. The closest ties FF has with IE is that it can import your IE settings, but that shouldn't cause problems.

Eureka!

Apparently I have not had anymore crashes since I have gone back to FF 5.9 - Time will tell.
I want to keep my Windows XP SP3 there is no way I will change that so I will now stick to the older FF version.

Google Chrome seems like a very light browser. If you have a netbook like I have, you will definitely feel the difference compared to IE. Firefox is pretty fast too though.

Another useful feature in Google Chrome is that the address bar works as a built in google search field as well.

You'll have to change sooner or later. You're already 2 windows versions behind. Sure there's still plenty of support and what not but that wont last forever.

There is no need that I change. I am not into the fashion trends buying new stuff all the time, software or other. As long as it does the job and what I need to do, I will go with it. I am not going to $$$$$$ Microsoft and those others. They are already plenty $$$$$$ enough they don't need more, not from me anyway! XP Pro is good and very stable and I know it well so if I get a blue screen of sorts I will know how to fix it.

Yet another useful feature is that if you use multiple tabs and one crashes, it doesn't bring down the other ones. Close the problematic one and try again without losing everything.

I didn't like Chrome at first when it came out, but now I love it. Stopped using FF about three months ago and never looked back.

There's a reason nobody uses Windows 95 anymore. It's because pretty much no program nowadays can run in W95. The day will come when XP hits the same snag.

I have got news... Firefox is crashing again... It has happened several times during the last hour.
The thing had stabilized and now it starts acting up again. I will have to refer to a FF forum to get the reasons for this.
Why does the thing keep crashing?? It is getting a little bit too much now. Very un-nerving.

Could be a conflict with an add-on. Have you tried disabling your add-ons one at a time?

I have thought of that. The problem is defining which add-on causes the bug.

Tools - Add-ons and then the arduous task of disabling extensions and plug-ins one-by-one. (Theory says it's fastest to disable one half at a time, then a quarter etc ...)

I have similar freezes on both machines, though not every couple of minutes but sufficiently often to be annoying.
one runs Vista Ultimate, the other XP Pro, both with FF 3.6.
Did disable ALL add-ons (and reinstalled only the essentials) and reduce history settings, the problem seems less frequent but is still there...

Firefox's performance has been slowly getting worse and worse on my computer. It was hanging every time I entered text.
So installed the new Firefox and now it crashes on startup every single time! I've tried re-installing it at least 6 times. Finally I try IE8 which is so slow on my computer it might as well not even be there. I then decided to check out Google Chrome, which is now the only browser that will "work" for me. I've had to restart my computer twice just to finish writing this post! THIS is why I haven't been on the forms much in the last while.

Sounds to me more like computer problems rather than actual browser problems. Corrupt registry perhaps.

I've been using IE for as long as I can remember....a lot of my friends switched to Firefox because 'it doesn't crash as much' but as the comments above prove, no system is immune from crashing.
I downloaded Safari a while ago and began using that, but noticed that it was quite slow. I've since reverted to IE.
And MC-you should def. get hooked up with Visa. It isn't perfect, but eventually it will replace XP3.
Btw, downloaded CCleaner, seems to be a very thorough program. Cheers!
