I'm not intimately familiar with their catalog, but yes, I do like them.

They've been showing a couple different live shows on TV recently, and next time they're in town, I'm definitely going to see them. Seems like a freaking awesome concert.

"Fear of the Dark" is a great freaking song.

I saw Iron Maiden in 1986 or 87 in Madison Square Garden. Some good memories. Surprised to hear they have anything new. My iPod has a bunch of their old stuff.

The title really got me wondering.... If it's just a title or a subtle hint that they will retire... Not that it would be a surprise when they do.

But, yes, I do like the band. And Bruce Dickinson is just such a talented human being, at basically everything he does. How can you not like someone who can be: a brilliant singer, a songwriter, TV show host, radio show host, film producer, professional fencer, pilot... Granted, not everything he touches is gold, but the band certainly is.

I can't say I've a favorite song... Hallowed be thy Name, Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner and Paschendale top the list, I'd say.
As far as albums... Seventh Son is certainly their most complete work.

Actually, Steve Harris writes the majority (if not all) the lyrics. Bruce just sings them as far as I'm aware.

Not that I'm complaining when he has such an awesome voice.

Well, he doesn't write most of the lyrics... But he writes some of them, which is enough to qualify.

If you can't get every album, then get The Best of the Beast. Make sure it's the two-disc version.

Love 'em, seen 'em many times. Favourite album is hard to pin down, but anything with Blaze Bayley certainly sucked. As for tunes, Prisoner, The Trooper, Where Eagles Dare, Run Silent, Run Deep, Holy Smoke, Alexander the Great & Transylvania are certainly on the list.

I would be going to see them this summer, having now just got a job after being unemployed for a few monthes, there isnt't enough money to go around.

While Harris is certainly the most prolific songwriter in - and leader of - Maiden, he by no means writes all the lyrics. Check out their discography:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Maiden#Discography

If you click on the individual albums, Harris wrote the vast majority of songs on the first few. But by Piece of Mind, other band members were helping out and/or writing complete songs. I'd say Dickinson is 2nd in songwriting credits, followed by Smith, Gers, and Murray.

I've seen them live at Roskilde Festival twice, first in 2000 and then again in 2003.

The first one was legendary though, apparently the festival guide booklet (which has a description of all the bands that are playing) had offended the band, by suggesting that Iron Maiden 'might perform one or two songs of their (then) new album, Brave New World'. As a result, the band decided to play the entire album in one go

Might as well throw in a self-plug, here's Brave New World from the 2000 concert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ce1Qkpdk9F8

They're only my favourite band of all time.

Seeing them on the Somewhere Back in Time tour was my first concert ever, and that got me hooked on concerts. I get to see Iron Maiden live twice this summer. In Toronto on July 3rd which I got floor tickets for, and then at Wacken in August. Oh this is going to be one hell of a summer for concerts.

What did the drummer say right before he was kicked out of the band?

Good ol' NWOBHM.

'Rhyme of The Ancient Mariner' and 'Powerslave' are pretty bad ass songs. '2am' and 'Man on the Edge' are 2 songs that also helped me out a few times when i was low.

I, as a drummer, both take offense, and sadly, can relate to that

How can you tell the drum riser is level? The drummer's drool is even.

What do you call a drummer with no girlfriend? Homeless!

A boys says to his dad: "When I grow up, I wanna be a drummer." Dad says; "You can't do both."

What do you say to a drummer at your front door? How much for the pizza.

I have all of their albums from the first self-titled till No Prayer For The Dying.
I didn't like the band that much from 1990 onward but I bought No Prayer For The Dying because it was red vinyl for only $1.
My favorite albums of theirs is Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son.
I saw them live in early 1991 at Long Beach Arena with opening act, Anthrax.

Somewhere In Time
Stranger In A Strangland
Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Alexander The Great
Wasted Years
Aces High
Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son

all are timeless classics.

Dave and Adrian playing the solo to "Hollowed be thy Name" live.. I think it was 1983 tour with Judas Preist or scorpions... I went and put a black and white "Strat" on layaway as soon as I could! . Iron Maiden is in a class of its own ... I saw them twice live and never regreted it.

While he's a very skilled drummer, I don't actually like his drumming very much. It's just too much, to the point where it detracts from the songs. And I feel the same way about his drum sound on the albums.

And I forgot to mention that I'm extremely upset; I was supposed to go see Iron Maiden and Dream Theater on June 19th. Only to find out that's the day my friends are getting married.

The twin harmony of the solos is fantastic with moody interludes , slashing rips and spiraling scales that are signature to them.... for me they define "guitar solos" to this day. Guitar Gods...!

I never liked that body style. I'm very conservative when it comes to guitar body shapes. Even buying an SG (Epiphone) recently was a small personal crisis. Though I'm glad I did.

Gotcha. Ibanez makes a lot of guitars that are quite nice, that other companies tend to be known for. I have an Ibanez AS-73 semi-hollowbody (similar to an ES-335) that is pretty darn nice.

I once owned a Dean unibody "Flying V" ....that is the most radical style I have ever owned didnt like it that much. I have always played Strats with the exception of a Gibson 1970's vintage "Tutor" that I put a Seymor Duncan humbucker in #1 and a hot rail into #2. That thing was a real kicker.

A funny story about my flying V.... we were playing a gig for about 150 people ..more or less a big party. I broke a string on my sunburst ...it had a early fender tremelo (like floyed rose) on it so the whole thing wangs out of tune. I had the flying V siting in a stand beside the drum riser. I switched guitars as fast as I could and finished playing ..( high and dry by Def Leapord). The people loved that V and were immediatly cheering it,,it seemed to change the whole mood.

Dont take it the wrong way... I was a big Dave Murry wannabe and never that good.

I'm very conservative when it comes to guitar body shapes. Even buying an SG (Epiphone) recently was a small personal crisis.

Same here.
I only like the Gibson ES-335 style and Fender Stratocaster styles. Only like the SG if it's a doubleneck.
I do like the Rickenbacker 360 12 strings.

I have an Ibanez AS-73 semi-hollowbody (similar to an ES-335) that is pretty darn nice.

Sweet!

Clever.
You turned a disaster in to a crowd pleaser quick.

Though the Flying V does seem like a showman guitar, Ace Frehley & Paul Stanley of Kiss and my friend Liz F'istycatz of the BlowUpDollz get an awesome tone out of theirs.

One big problem with it was a simple one .... for some reason I practice sitting down even at band practice . I love the way my strat's sit with me and the V just didnt work .....so I did not to play it much and used it for a backup.

One thing about Maiden that for me set them apart was the historical themes in thier music .... They take us into moments in time. Fly with the RAF over London during the Blitz , Charge with the Dragoons over Russian fortifications , Imagine a buring village after a fighter bomber attack , And survive a foil attack in a dual of the blade. Like Rush and other bands I always enjoyed the thought and storytelling in the Music of Iron Maiden.
