Opening Day: Stupid Question

Mon Apr 12, 2010 4:10 pm

What dictates where opening day games are played in any given league? I live in the Bay Area and the Giants were out of town on the first day of baseball. My partners mom loves the Red Sox. They were in Fenway for the first day of the season.

The schedule is generally randomly generated. 2 years ago the Red Sox were in Japan, which is about as far away from home as you can get.

I think the MLB Offices also like to have an exciting match-up on opening day... like this years Red Sox-Yankees on Sunday Night Baseball. As far as the rest of the teams, it's just a random draw.......but cities with more then one team would never have both at home and opening the same day. NYC, SFO, LAX

Most Opening Days, if not all of them, the leagues generally have the teams playing their division rivals during Opening Week/Day.

Well, what do you expect from the East Coast Sports Network?

if not all of them

Not all of them, the Cubs started in Atlanta.

Simple, money..and how the networks have scheduled them to get the most ad revenue for the given time slot....it's not "randomly generated". It's one of the reasons why most games are played during the evening hours during the workweek.

And if MLB decided to have the Indians and Royals as their Sunday night opener ESPN would have no problem with that right? It is all about money, and MLB and ESPN make sure to scratch each others' backs.
