What To Do In Halifax?

Thu Apr 22, 2010 6:48 pm

I have a lengthy layover in Halifax this weekend and have no clue what to do. I'm with a crew that I know won't be any fun. Anyone have any suggestions?

Halifax is a quaint English town that isn't really famous for much apart from having a building society named after it.

I am guessing he might have meant Halifax, NS, Canada as it has an airport unlike the yorkshire one. However I am not an expert on either...

I'm sorry, I should have clarified that. I meant Halifax, Nova Scotia.

I been there before its a nice area, the port area is nice. Also I highly recommend going to the Cementary which many of the victims in the Titanic were laid to rest. Take a tour it was very interesting.

Visit the Citadel, Spring Garden and Boardwalk. You can enjoy some of the finest seafood there as well. Salty's restaurant is nice but may be quite pricey.

Peggys Cove is a nice visit. A Swiss Air 111 memorial is just 1.5km down the road from Peggys Cove.

If you go and if the water is rough, stay well away from the high water mark, very dangerous surf there at times. It seems a sport to tempt fate there according to what I saw.

Citadel

If what I was told was correct, Leon Trotsky was held there for a night back in 1917. There's also the Maritime Museum, if that (pardon the pun) floats your boat.

Shearwater Aviation Museum, at the air base on the Dartmouth side, all about the Naval Aviation history of Canada.
Lots of activities on the historic properties waterfront.
Sat afternoon means good cheer and a maritime sing-a-long at the Lower Deck on the waterfront in Halifax.
As mentioned the Maritime Museum also HMCS Sackville the last WW2 Corvette, Theodore the TugBoat and a host of other boats ships etc...
The Citadel is worth the walk up the hill if just for the view, Point Pleasant Park was nice (I heard it was devastated by Juan a few years ago)

I have not been to the Shearagua Aviation Museum, however I have been to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and it is superb. Also in Halifax is the Maritime Command Museum which I have not been to but will, next time I am in Halifax.

Hmmm....I had a fantastic time visiting Halifax back in September of '02 but I was spoiled by the lovely weather. I can't recommend my favorites (sea kayaking in Prospect Bay, a ride on the Harbour Hopper, the Public Garden) because the weather, it seems, will be sketchy when you're there.

Hence, museums!!

Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is also good, as it is housed in an elegant old building that used to be the city's Post Office and Customs House.
Pancakes are delicious.
