Mrs. JetsGo Gets A 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Fri Apr 23, 2010 10:25 pm

***Self gloss***

Last night, we bought a brand new 2011 Hyundai Sonata SE to replace her 2007 Hyundai Elantra GLS. Got a great deal on it as "repeat" customers. I'll let the pictures do the talking:

So far, in the 30 miles we have driven this car, it is fantastic! Has all the bells and whistles one could ask for, plus unmatched styling for its class. Fuel economy should be great as well, however obviously we haven't had a chance to know how great. Turned quite a few heads driving today, or so we like to think.

That is, assuming it doesn't smell like recycled PVC and duct tape...

I've been paying more attention to Korean cars on the road and it sure seems that they look like crap as they age. I figure thats either because the cars are crap, or the owners treat them like crap because they are cheap.

There was a time, you know, when Honda and Toyota weren't nearly as accepted here.

I'm continually impressed by Hyundai. I think they really started to come into their own at a furious pace when they introduced the US-built Sonata a few years back.

I recall not so long ago when Japanese cars smelled like cow dung inside when new, would not start on a cold day, and rusted out pronto. That changed too.

I am amazed at the quality and appeal of Hyundai's current offerings; not so long ago, they were a punchline to a joke, but now, there are several in the line I'd quite happily drive. Congrats on your new ride, JetsGo.

To each his own, but mind you I owned a 2007 Fusion up until Feb 2010 and know them quite well. This car, in the 50 miles we have driven it, is FAR superior. And no, the 2010 Fusion is not much different at all from the 2007 minus the addition of hybrid and sport model.

Quoting ABQ747 (Reply 11):

No. First of all, there is no "Toyota Solara." It is the Toyota Camry Solara. The 2011 Sonata takes after the Volkswagen CC and the Mercedes CLS in that it is a "four door coupe."

Ford has made numerous improvements to the whole Fusion lineup. The 2nd Generations Fusions are far better than the 1st Generation models. It's not fair for you to compare a 2011 model Sonata to a 2007 model Fusion.

I'm quite aware that the Solara is built off the Camry platform. However, most people refer to it as just "Solara." I still say the Sonata looks more like a Solara than a VW CC or a Mercedes CLS. Anyway, enjoy your new car.

Congrats on the new car!

Both Hyundai and Kia have been improving faster than the rest of the industry and I believe that they now represent the value that the Japanese cars did in the 70s and 80s. (I was buying Toyotas and Datsuns in those days.)

I've probably mentioned it before, but I also believe that Ford and GM need to look at the Korean cars as the ones to compete with. Value for the money, range of features, and now styling. Korea is where the competition is coming from for the mass market. And they are gaining market share.

The other impressive aspect of the two brands? The 10 Year 100K drive train warranty. I would probably look seriously at paying for a bumper-to-bumper upgrade as we keep cars in the family for a long time. That upgraded warranty would even cover my granddaughter for her first 2 years of driving! Most impressive.

My friend and I were just talking about them as he's looking for a new car. That's a good looking car. I'm amazed that Hyundai has come so far in the last 10 years. Great warranty (although I'd definitely spend the money to get a decent service contract for extending bumper to bumper coverage....pm me and I'll share the actual costs on those and how to ask for it from the dealer) and decent power.

I hope you guys enjoy that new ride.....

Ten or fifteen years ago, this post would've been worthy of a good ripping. However, after driving a few of my friends' Hyundais, they're actually pretty solid cars. Better, in fact, than some Nissans and Toyotas. They've done a great job recently in terms of building up the quality of their components.

This is why I am eagerly awaiting the next-generation Hyundai Elantra due later this year. With a new 2.0-liter I-4 DI engine rated at around 155-160 bhp (SAE 08/04 net) matched with a six-speed automatic, the new Elantra is going to be FAST and still be reasonably frugal on gas. I'm seriously considering getting the new Elantra when that comes out.

The new Sonata is getting some very strong customer reviews. On edmunds.com it has a 9.7 out of 10.0 with over 100 customers rating the car. One of the best I've seen so far on that site.

How is a US Subaru Outback an imported car? Designed (partially) in and for the US Market, and built in the US?

And pig ugly - a backwards step from the previous model, which wasn't a beauty itself. The more I see the Japanese version we get here in Oz, the more I know I made the right decision to reaplace my Outback with a Skoda.

But, the Koreans have really come along. The ix35 is miles ahead of the god-awful Tucson it replaced, and that Sonata does look nicer than a Camry. But the real question is, how long will it be until the Chinese catch up?

Now that's a question that is giong to give the US (and Japanese) companies some headaches. Probably starting tonight if anyone there is reading this.

I think for a few years Korea will be able to stir the market, especially when they toss in a 10 year warranty. At some point both India and China may stir things up a bit - but they had better come in beating Korea in terms of style, performance, features, warranty and price.

My next door neighbor has a new Sonata...very nice

Oh and I love my Tucson. Only one glitch...The built in bluetooth will not recognize the voice dialing part. So it downloads all my contacts and then will not recognize when I say "Call Mom"....Minor and will be fixed when I next have time.

Doc, believe it or not; it's not an unusual occurence for an all-new model to roll out half-way through the model year... it's been done many times before. However, in the old days, an early-release of a new model (or heavily redesigned one) would usually be designated in half model years (aka 2010-1/2); the most well-known example of this would be the first Mustangs which were indeed designated as 1964-1/2s.

Over the years, the half-year designation has fallen out of favor and essentially is now marketed as an early introduction of the coming model year; in this case being 2011. In the Sonata's case, I'm assuming that there is already a 2010 model (which is obviously from the previous generation) already out there; which is why the new one received an early 2011 model year designation.

Typically and traditionally, production changeovers to the following model year takes place in July/August.

Before Dodge sold the Attitude they used to sell its previous version as the Verna (Dodge Verna), incredibly the word Verna is one letter away from the spanish version of the male sexual organ (in a rude way to top it off). Who decided to name it like that... dont know but they changed to Attitude and its also quite Bad.

If Hyundai makes reliable cars and offers good customer service, more than one automaker will be in deep do do.

RE: Mrs. JetsGo Gets A 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Looked at them this morning on the lot, possibly to replace my 2008 Nissan Sentra

ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR CAR for the money!

Tell me more JetsGo...i looks at the Tucson as well and the battle now lies between the two.

The Altima is nice, and I could probably get a decent deal as a repeat customer etc, but I do think you get more for the money with a Sonata.

Nissan's "packages" are so odd...want to add foglights? Then you must add premium audio and a sunroof?!? So very strange

we bought a brand new 2011 Hyundai Sonata SE

Congrats Jetsgo!

Although they weren't the car class we were looking for, I've noticed lately that the VW CC carries some similarity to the Mercedes CLS 63. Some nice lines on both of them.

Then Hyundai comes out with a third with similar styling, and I really feel its a sharp looking car!

Looks great!

That's exactly the way Honda does it. Want a sunroof and leather? Have to order the EX. Cloth and no sunroof but wheels and not hubcaps, LX. Want the basic? No X. Nissan does the same, they just call it S, SL, SE, etc.... It's not strange when you figure out the Japanese are making money, while the American brands aren't. Well, except for Ford, but honestly, I haven't looked at their options offerings lately. They might be doing the same.

The Japanese have been selling cars like this for a while. It helps keep costs down.

I've found if you really have to get the fog lights, the dealer will always install them for you at a cost. But for what they charge, just upgrade the package for a few $$ more.

I'd have a hard time not going with the Altima. A wonderful car. The Hyundai's are nice too, but Nissan just makes great cars, and that CVT is pretty sweet too. Besides that, looking at the resale values at local dealers, at least around here, the Altima is kicking the Camry's butt, and I can imagine the same against the Hyundai's.

Damn Hyundai has completely re done their entire line up with the Elantra to go..

Here's a picture of the new Elantra just unveiled a few days ago, known as the Avante in South Korea:

I give full credit to Hyundai for their recent success and quality cars. I'm in the market for a sporty coupe in the near future, and while I love the Nissan 370Z (used to have a 350) and it would be an easy first choice if I had a little more $, the Genesis coupe has similar specs and is much, much cheaper. Having driven both, it's clear that the Nissan is a better developed car, but the Hyundai isn't so far behind that I'd seriously think the Nissan is worth $8,000 more. For that price difference, I can buy aftermarket parts and have a little V6 engined track rocket with all the goodies, though I must say the Nissan is a more attractive design.
