There's Never Been A Marine As US President.

Mon Apr 26, 2010 9:05 am

I'm almost 100 % positive we've never had a US President that served in the Marine corps. Please let me know if I'm correct and why have we never had a US Marine as President?

No explanation... there just hasn't been a marine president. There are only 44 presidents to date, and the chance of one of them being a marine is pretty low.

John Adams
John Quincy Adams
Martin Van Buren
James Polk
Grover Cleveland
Herbert Hoover
Calvin Coolidge
Warren G Harding
Franklin D Roosevelt
Abraham Lincoln
James Buchanan
Bill Clinton
Barack Obama
Woodrow Wilson
William Howard Taft

I believe that one sailor has been a President, I believe LBJ was in the Navy during WW2 and was decorated in a dubious fashion for just being the theater. Of course many solidiers have been President such as Washington,Grant, and Eisenhower

The only real military men that come to mind when I think of US presidents would be Ulysses Grant, Dwight Eisenhower, and Andrew Jackson, all career army generals. All the other presidents with military experience were just short term or hostilities only.

As far as US Marines go, wouldn't other branches of the American armed forces consider that ...well, a member of the USMC would be the least likely to... let's say... win a Nobel Prize?

Add George Washington to that list. Colonel in the Virginia militia and General of the Continental Army prior to becoming to first US President. That said the three that you listed aren't really among the most successful of US Presidents. With U.S. Grant being among the worst President's. I think Ike was fairly average and generally helped, after the end of the Korean War, by the general prosperity of the 1950s. Jackson generally benefited from having some astute political advisers to back up his populist bluster.

And George Washington is chopped liver?

Either way, while I appreciate the sentiment that the CIC might want to have military experience under his belt, a good CIC will be willing to listen to his military advisors (which Obama does). The skill set required for the job description of "Soldier/Sailor/Marine/Airman" is very different from the skill set required for the job of President.

Lets retry this thread as any Flag rank officers depending on service who have been President. I do not think any USAF Flag officers were President even though GWB was a Capt in the TXANG. Barry Goldwater and Curtis Lemay both USAF Generals did run for the office though. Back in the 30's there was a Marine General who had the distintion of being awarded the MOH twice Smedley Butler who was approached by business types to over throw the FDR administration.

The ironic part of Nixon serving in the Navy was that it was probably one of the reasons why he became friends with JFK while they were both in the Senate.

Interestingly enough a friend of mine from school who is in a training program who wants to become a marine and I have no doubt that with his commitment he will get there has no interest in becoming the POTUS at all, when I asked him he said he just do sent want to be a POTUS.

In the modern era, with the exception of Eisenhower there have been no US Presidents that were of a flag rank in the US Military. Nixon made it to Lt. Commander. Still everyone else that served and was an officer was never more than a junior officer in rank. Theodore Roosevelt was a Colonel in the Spanish-American War, but he was initially commissioned as a Lt. Col. Before TR several Presidents served as officers in the Civil War -- but then since many of them were well connected politically they were commissioned at much higher ranks. And not all served in combat roles.

Only other President that I can recall is Zachary Taylor who was a combat general in the Mexican-American War. He had been a career solider prior to entering office in 1849.

So the list is now (flag officers):

George Washington
Andrew Jackson
Zachary Taylor
U.S. Grant
Dwight D. Eisenhower

Thank you for the replys. I was referring to a POTUS who served in the Marines/armed services not necessarily being like a Grant or Eisenhower who were just as known for their military service as well as POTUS.

A heartfelt thank you and appreciation from myself and I can safely say 99.9% of the A Net family.

The men and women who are Marines I know are very balanced responsible and personable folk. Three qualities that would serve our nation well. I percieve a Marine POTUS would be more than likely to make sure he/she is in control of their administration. As compared to say W or Carter who lost control in different manners. Carter with the nation and the world and W letting Dick Chaney and his dad's posse running the show.

And while on this thread about the POTUS was their ever a POTUS who's routes were an impoverished urban childhood?
A lot of our former POTUS such as HST, LBJ, Abe, Garfield to name a few were from rural poverty.

Actually there might have been a USMC President, if you count James Whitmore in the "Independence Day" universe.

Not sure if he was Navy or USMC but he did fly a Hornet and was a war hero. And of course, in a starker reality, John Glenn ran, but did not make the cut.

James Buchanan was a private in the War of 1812.

And a little poking around found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...States_Presidents_by_military_rank

To answer a prior question, there were apparently twelve US Presidents who held flag rank.

Military service

After completing fourteen home-study Army Extension Courses, Reagan enlisted in the Army Enlisted Reserve[27] on April 29, 1937, as a private assigned to Troop B, 322nd Cavalry at Des Moines, Iowa.[28] He was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Officers Reserve Corps of the Cavalry on May 25, 1937, and on June 18 was assigned to the 323rd Cavalry.[29] His service number was 0 357 403.

Reagan was ordered to active duty for the first time on April 18, 1942. Due to his nearsightedness, he was classified for limited service only, which excluded him from serving overseas.[30] His first assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation at Fort Mason, California, as a liaison officer of the Port and Transportation Office.[31] Upon the approval of the Army Air Force (AAF), he applied for a transfer from the Cavalry to the AAF on May 15, 1942, and was assigned to AAF Public Relations and subsequently to the 1st Motion Picture Unit (officially, the "18th AAF Base Unit") in Culver City, California.[31] On January 14, 1943 he was promoted to First Lieutenant and was sent to the Provisional Task Force Show Unit of This Is The Army at Burbank, California.[31] He returned to the 1st Motion Picture Unit after completing this duty and was promoted to Captain on July 22, 1943.[28]

In January 1944, Captain Reagan was ordered to temporary duty in New York City to participate in the opening of the sixth War Loan Drive. He was re-assigned to the 18th AAF Base Unit on November 14, 1944, where he remained until the end of World War II.[28] He was recommended for promotion to Major on February 2, 1945, but this recommendation was disapproved on July 17 of that year.[32] He returned to Fort MacArthur, California, where he was separated from active duty on December 9, 1945.[32] By the end of the war, his units had produced some 400 training films for the AAF.[28]

You made a mockery of the military service of the greatest President in a generation. While he could not go over seas for medical reasons, he could have just walked away. Instead, he made training movies that probably saved lives and did so until the war was over.

So what have you done?
