Your Favourite Gay Themed Movies

Fri Apr 30, 2010 7:37 am

My favorite movie so far is "Shelter". The story, music, scenery, cast... It's a whole package... If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend it.... Some of the others I enjoyed watching are:

* A Beautiful Thing
* Bent
* Boy Culture
* Latter Days
* Brokeback Mountain
* Transamerica
* Prayers for Bobby
* Eating out and the sequels
* Mysterious Skin
* Big Eden
* Trick
* Juste une Question d'Amour (Just a Question of Love)
* Milk

What is your favorite gay themed movie? Any recommendations?

If you are open to foreign flicks, two recent movies I saw with this theme that I liked were Plata Quemada (Burnt Money), and Glue. The first is an A-movie and has issues of repression of homosexual tendencies tied to a bigger story. The second is an independent film that is strictly about coming of age and bein gay in a small town in the middle of nowhere (Patagonia).

This is a Thai movie, recommended by Christao and was really good:

"Love of Siam"

Watched it on YouTube, without subtitles, and then saw it at my local Blockbuster here in Houston. A really amazing story like "Beautiful Thing"!

One of my favourites also - a very good film, partly because it doesn't really make any issues about the whole gay thing, no-one has HIV and there is no slutty sex. Possibly one of the best gay romances I've ever seen on screen.

Quoting TurkishWings (Thread starter):
Beautiful Thing

A seminal film, I saw it when I was finally realising I was gay. I saw it four times in the cinema, own it on DVD and quite like it.

Quoting TurkishWings (Thread starter):
Transamerica

Amazing road trip movie with a twist, with a fine fine fine lead performance!

Quoting TurkishWings (Thread starter):
Mysterious Skin

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of my favourite actors, and this was an amazing film, though the subject matter is not for all tastes. He's also exceptional in Brick and (500) Days of Summer - both worth checking out, especially the latter.

Quoting TurkishWings (Thread starter):
Milk

Great performance from Sean Penn and a very good movie indeed

I would also say that Priscilla - Queen of the Desert, an Australian movie from 1994, is also an exceptional gay movie that is fun, and very Australian

So true. He was sort of cute in his Top Gun days, but I've never understood all the fawning over him. He's really not all that good looking, and when you add in his insanity, er devotion to Scientology, I just don't understand the appeal.

I am not a huge fan of "gay" cinema, although I do have a couple favourites:

I am a big fan of the German movie Sommersturm, which I believe was released in English under Summer Storm. Kinda cheesy, but solid plot line and enough innuendo to make it funny.

I am also a big fan of La Cage aux Folles. I especially LOVE the 80's Menu music on the DVD. If anyone happens to know what song that is (it is on the main menu, believe it is a yellow background with scenes from the film playing) I would love to know. Although I do have a feeling it is generic 80's music.
Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood.

"To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar" - Patrick Swayze in drag... 'nuff sed.
"The Birdcage" - I love Robin Williams
"Priscilla Queen of the Desert" - Classic
"Latter Days" - Always makes me cry
"Gods & Monsters" - Brendan Fraser's only decent film, and he gets nekkid!

My fave gay-themed movie is "Bear Cub", a Spanish-indie film.

Plot: Pedro (Jos Luis Garca-Prez) is an attractive and homosexual dentist who lives a active lifestyle. He offers to take care of his nine-year-old nephew Bernardo (David Castillo) for two weeks while the child's mother, Pedro's older sister Violeta (Elvira Lindo), goes off to India with her latest boyfriend. Pedro modifies his sexual behavior but quickly finds out that Bernardo is extremely comfortable and mature in his attitude towards life. When Violeta suddenly becomes detained in India, Pedro finds himself the boy's caretaker and must face the challenges of raising a child.

Warm, funny, and thought-provoking movie - highly recommend it.

''Maurice'' was also a good movie .

The movie follows Maurice (James Wilby) down his road of self-discovery; from his embarrassing teen years to Cambridge (where he gets his first exhilarating taste of love) to his post-collegiate years as a young man struggling to come to terms with his sexuality in a time when homosexuals were mercilessly persecuted.

The movie is also very much about class struggle. Maurice is a gentleman born and bred, with a penchant for snobbery. As he comes to terms with his sexuality, he is forced to deal with differences in class when he realizes he is in love with someone from the serving class.

I definitely have to go with Bruno as one of the best I've seen in a long time. Boys Don't Cry is also excellent though a major downer so I've only seen it twice.

Though not a gay-themed, I have to say one of my favorite gay characters *ever* was Robin Williams' brother in Mrs. Doubtfire, "Uncle Jack". Even though his role was small, Harvey Fierstein really hammed it up with Williams. No matter how many repeat viewings I've had, his character just sets off laughter bombs in me.

They're both great, just different in their own ways. The best thing about the Birdcage rendition is the dinner scene - watching Gene Hackman's performance just puts me in stitches every time.

Quoting Lufthansa411 (Reply 32):
I am a big fan of the German movie Sommersturm, which I believe was released in English under Summer Storm. Kinda cheesy, but solid plot line and enough innuendo to make it funny.

Oh yes, I have Sommersturm on DVD   It's quite cool... and there are some real laugh out loud parts in it. A really good film actually. The teens would love it!
I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!
