Nashville Is Under Water!

Sun May 02, 2010 8:25 pm

Hey all,
In the past 36 hours, Nashville has been flooded with 15 inches of water, many places are shut down, roads closed, between noon yesterday and today, I-24, I-60, and 1-40 have all been closed at sometime and the side roads are even worse. Many schools have been cancelled for tommorow, and proms last night were cancelled. The last update before my power shut off, 5 people had died from flooding, with many more missing. Right now, Nashville and the State of Tennessee need yalls prayers and thoughts! Thanks and God Bless,

The flooding has even cancelled all classes at Vanderbilt, and all flights at BNA

Yea, it's pretty nuts. The rain started around 7am Saturday morning just after I got to the hangar.. and didn't stop until 6pm Sunday... between that it just poured...!!! All 3 major highways through town were shut down at one time or another due to flooding. The river downtown is close to going over the berm and flooding 1st Ave area. Southwest shut down all flight at 3pm and the airport has seen limited service.

The Low coming from the west stalled and forced all the moisture being drawn up from the Gulf to just nail the middle Tennessee area. Go 2 hours or so east and west of Nashville and they had a good weekend.

The airport is still open with flights coming and going.....be it limited

Couldn't believe it myself when I found out earlier...our exams tomorrow have been cancelled! I've never seen them take such a drastic step here...not even when we had over a foot of snow and ice. Of course, the library is apparently flooded, so studying is out of the question anyways...

Update: The Opryland Hotel (to my knowledge, the largest hotel outside of Las Vegas in the United States) has been evacuated, due to loss of electrical power, and the Cumberland River that runs through downtown Nashville is at 49.55 feet (40 feet flood stage), if it hits 50 feet, downtown Nashville and L.P. Field will be flooded. Current Total in Nashville is 15 inches in 36 hours, making it the rainiest day, two-day period, and the rainiest May (even though we are only 2 days into it), and the 6th rainiest month in the history of Nashville.

I have several friends who are Nashville natives and they can't remember a rain like the past few days. We living there in the mid to late '90's when heavy rains pushed through. I have a picture somewhere and will post if I can find it of the Cheatham Dam & Lock virtually underwater. Have to see if I can find it. My one friend has a business off of Whites Creek Pike NW of 155 and he had terrible damage. His brother lost everything due to the flash flood in the area. The type of terrain in the area just doesn't handle a lot of water quickly very well. Here's hoping everything works out well.
Warm winds blowing, heating blue skies, a road that goes forever, I'm going to Texas!

15" of rain in 36 hours is a lot of rain for just about any city or area. I hope no one gets hurt or killed by the flooding, and their losses are at a mimum.

Terrain and soil composition is everything. We had 13" of rain in 18 hours the last time a typhoon made landfall in this region but thanks to being a large river delta and good flood protection, there was virtually no trouble.

Here's hoping all in BNA pull through.

I live about 40 miles east of Nashville we had some flooding but not major. And today you can't even tell it even rained the whole weekend. Also I wonder if Obama will pay a visit to BNA?

The Grand Olde Opry Hotel will be lucky to be open before Christmas. The Opry Mills Mall next door...who knows... my guess is months. Downtown river front area is a mess. LP Field where the Titans play is underwater.

Thank you all for your prayers for the state of Tennessee. Thank God, tonight the river dropped below the 40-ft flood stage, water is slowy beginning to recede and now the tough work is beginning. On a side note, CNN finally 5 days after the flood decided to show up (being the first major network to do so). It is about time, it seemed that unless oil leaked from the Titans Stadium or someone tried to blow up Bridgestone Arena, Nashville would never get the valuable airtime we need in order to spread the word and welcome aid. Also, WSMV-TV (NBC Channel 4) held a telethon tonight, over 3 hours they raised $1.7M. This figure is stunning, this is why they call us the Volunteer State. Here is a great article written by a fellow Nashvillian. WE ARE NASHVILLE, together we will get through this. God Bless America and God Bless Nashville!

I have been watching the flooding on FoxNews Channel everyday. Maybe you just have not scene the newscrews? FoxNews uses the local newspeople to report on the flood.

Our local Fox station, channel 4 here in the DFW area, has been covering it too.
