Not sure about Oakland but the real Chinatown (not the one for tourist) is out here in the Outer Sunset district where I live. My favorites are along Irving street between 19th & 24th Ave.

I live in Oakland myself, but if I have a hankering for dim sum I usually go to Clement St. in San Francisco's inner Richmond district. Still, Legendary Palace in Oakland's Chinatown is quite good. I can also recommend Restaurant Peony in Chinatown; I haven't had dim sum there, but if the quality is anything like their evening banquet menu, then it should be excellent. Feel free to PM me for other restaurant recommendations in Oakland and Berkeley!

Yeah, just don't eat anything that isn't on a cart (anything that they offer you on a plate, but not on a cart) or you will have an $80 lunch bill. Guess how I learned that? Yang Sing lost my business for such dishonest behavior. Charging $12 for a slice of broiled fish and not warning the customer that it's vastly more expensive than the regular dim sum? No price list on the counter? Sorry, I'm not going back there. Great weight loss program, though; my wallet was MUCH lighter after we left the restaurant.

My favorite dim sum joint (and I've tried the ones in the Outer Richmond) is called Four Seas. It's in the touristy Chinatown on Grant st. They have Dim Sum until 3PM every day and it's very good. There's even a photo of Bill Clinton having a meal there on the wall. And they run an honest business.

I don't mean to knock your suggestion but I can't condone anything at teh Rincon Center.
Completely over-priced. The Rincon Center is one of the most expensive commercial real estate properties in San Francisco That's strictly for businesses to schmooze and impress potential clients. You can go downtown any major city in the world and get the same exact food at the usual ripoff prices.

That totally sounds like something that would happen at Yang Sing.

A company I use to work for had a company party there. Their food was ok and I knew it was a very expensive place. I just knew I was glad I wasn't paying for it.

Good call. I've been there and it was good. Having President Bill Clinton is a good endorsement. He loves to eat!

I concur with Four Seas, when I lived there (left 9 years ago) we used to take our co workers who came in from other cities there for lunch. I also used to love the Hang Ah Tea Room up steep Sacramento St just before Stockton St. Good places in SF seem to stay around for years, it's nice these places are still around.

I used to love Henry's Hunan on Sacramento & Kearny for their spicy food. You dont find Hunan here in Honolulu, so I miss it terribly. (seems Henry's has expanded locations which may or may not be a good thing..)

If you can rent a car, I'd recommend these places for dim sum just outside San Francisco:

Hong Kong Flower Lounge--Milbrae, CA
Koi Palace--Daly City, CA

Bring some money, since the dim sum in both restaurants are fairly expensive (but really good!).

I liked Fung Lum in the SFO international terminal.

I believe that the OP was asking about real Chinese (or as real as American Chinese food gets), not McChinese.

Way too much    for mediocre quality!

There is no excuse for the prices they charge, except that they're catering to the expense account set. My favorite little place on Clement charges less than half what they do for a plate of har gow!

The location alone is enough for me to know that it's a ripoff.

Quoting LH459 (Reply 15):

...and since companies aren't spending that much on expensive dinners, my guess is that they're skimping on quality rather than lowering their prices.

Just about any Chinese restaurant on Clement street or Irving street is 10 times better than Yang Sing or any place in the Financial District.

I'm a Pediatrician.

You know you're a pediatrician when:
1) You can dodge a stream of urine effortlessly
2) You can change a diaper with one hand tied behind your back and blindfolded. In 20 seconds flat.
3) You have to keep up with all the kiddie cartoons so that you can chat with your patients about what Dora and Sponge Bob have been up to this week.
4) You have a Spiderman sticker crawling up the side of your ID badge.

5) You get your paycheck.

Hence, I like cheap dim sum places.

Went today and I still like Four Seas better. But this place has an amazing view of departing traffic from SFO and the food is quite good, if not a touch overpriced.

He is not a good gauge as to what San Francisco is like.
Even though he lives here, he is a social outcast and psychopath.
