Things You'll Never Understand Of Other Societies

Fri May 21, 2010 11:01 pm

Eurovision:

I have not seen one from start to finish, just bits and pieces. But this show really lifts the whole European stereotype to the next level. A complete and total political politeness that really makes everything look like a candy store-robotic world: so painfully sugary, kitsch to the square power, and carefree. The world could be falling apart and you would not know it by watching Eurovision. Botox smiles everywhere. The costumes are cool but just add to the whole Disney World feel. I understand in Europe PP is a key to existence, otherwise the continent would be right back to getting along just like they did in 1939... So in the end there is nothing wrong with Eurovision, and I've noticed last few years a bit more sexuality seeping in, but it is just not compatible to that which I'm used to or grew up with. It is like watching a very sweet artifact from the old world.

Children beauty pageants:

This one is really big in the United States, there's even a show on cable totally dedicated to it. At first I thought it was a joke, an elaborate joke where someone was being set up in believing all these women really had gone fanatical into watching their daughters dress up like future Lady Gaga's-meet-a girl from a B-side strip club. It was just all so over the top in the dress and make up and the dramarama of the 'mothers', it really looked like it coudn't be a real thing. But saw the show again on another day, they actually travel all over competing. Now, I don't know what the fathers of these girls think (I'm guessing many are divorced or are MIA), but obviously they never heard of pedophiliacs. Maybe it's a Catholic organized event (see I can make jokes about the Church), but then again they are not boys. In conclusion, around these parts where daddy's little girl is a way of life, the fathers of those girls would need to get into witness protection. I guess the mothers woudn't care about the new nicknames they would acquire...

Bullfighting (to the death of the bull):

Classic gripe material. In my country, it is so abhorred that it intices violent reactions from animal loving compatriots. Few understand it is part of the culture of several countries and at the very least the culture needs to be respected. They recently had a matador gored by a bull in México. I thought over there, the bull was not killed. Apparently, it is. Same in Colombia, Perú, and most other countries in Latin America. I felt bad for the matador, I feel a little less now, of course I don't wish him any harm. But in the year 2010 it is increasingly interesting to see the slow death of an animal that does have pain receptors, is not even at least partially compensated by having a nice grill after. I mean if you are going to kill the poor beast, at least not waste the protein. In the end, while the popularity in Latin America has declined (it was never ever popular in Argentina, we just crush their heads at the slaughterhouse), it is still a concept I fail to grasp. These days there are other ways of showing bravery, like trying to go to a soccer match...

I just had to comment on those three. Never will understand them.

In some countries, the plumbing just cannot cope with the paper. So it's better to have a bin than overflowing toilet.

Which is why I referenced catching up with everyone else in the 21st century. There has been plumbing since the Romans, and some countries still can't flush paper down the toilet.

Oh yes, I heard it does occur in many places. I imagine this is probably because the pipes in some of the poorer areas are narrow thus very suceptible to clogging, at least that is what I think. So it is a forced habit, maybe? In a public place while quite foul, at least it is not your home. I don't know if that is done in homes as well, but that would be quite strange to me as I always toss it in the toilet.

Speaking of restrooms, that reminded me... the bidet.

Argentina (and Uruguay) have the highest penetrations of bidets in the world per home pretty much (basically, all homes have them), from what I read only a couple of Arab countries come close. In a few European countries there are some and in Japan, but that's it. And that is something most people all over the world do not understand, the infamous bidet.

When they visit, it is a classic moment to watch them enter the bathroom for the first time and locate the bathtub, the hand washing, the toilet... and ''what is that contraption thing over there?'' I have stories about what people thought it was for.

I can only partially agree...

I have seen in this in plenty-capable places here in the US

My thing I can't understand:

Why men (particularly in NYC & Italy as a whole) feel the need to stare and cat-call at a woman when she is HOLDING HANDS with her boyfriend/husband...WTF? Do you really think for a micro second that she is going to suddenly be interested in a total stranger and leave her companion?

Its flattering to me (used to happen to my girlfriend and I all the time) but its also bizarre

I'm a bit shy so I don't get that one either. A few of my friends have done it, but almost always with girls that are alone or in a group, not with one that is with a man. I would never do it even if the girl was grabbing my privates on to the dance floor... hahaha.

Mostly the scumbags and the guidos. According to my younger sister, it is noticeably worse in Rome and some other European locales.

I think it's just a macho thing; show your buddies that you can call out at women.

Japan. Never been there, but they mystify me.

They invent completely artificial pop stars and teenage boys send her love letters knowing full well she doesn't actually exist.

They invented Karaoke. 'nuff said.

How a society can be so prudish about any public display of affection and yet so casual about nudity.

The medical philosophy of not telling a patient how serious the illness is.

Bukkake. They invented the word. As well as the wide availability of what is really close to kiddie porn.

I mean, I respect them, but I have to say that much about Japanese culture just makes no sense to me.

Mexico and Chicklets. I don't understand why every time I drive from Matamoros to South Padre Island I get bombarded with people trying to sell me Chicklets. Why Chicklets?

Another thing about Mexico - Telemundo. It's the funniest crap to watch, and I don't speak a lick of Spanish. The women, god, their make-up is SO overdone and it perpetuates EVERY stereotype Americans have of Mexico.

Europe: Why does EVERY airport sign have to be Lufthansa Yellow? And there is sort of this robotic niceness about you, with a smugness as well.

Asia....Yeah, it's just pretty much lived up to every stereotype I have ever imagined. They are all pretty much good ones, but they are also very funny.

The Japanese are interesting people. And I like it because it makes you see the world in different ways.

I'll chime in on this. I think it has to do with the formality of their culture. Polite, formal, strict, rigorous, completely controlled by the super-ego. Their id is completely repressed and surfaces in very "creative" manners, especially in sexual arenas.

Drowry (sic) murder - mainly in Pakistan and parts of India. You would kill a bride because they can't come up with enough to buy their wedding partner?.

Honor murder - In various societies. Kill a woman because they had sex outside of marriage or before marriage or raped?

Arranged marriage - In various societies. Someone picks out my spouse? What if they are ugly as sin or stupid as a fence post?

If you are the ugliest thing since Shrek, then this one will usually play to your serious advantage... Unless that is taken into account by those who arrange on the other side! Does physical attractiveness play any part in arranged marriages or is it purely economical/religious whatever?

Quoting vikkyvik (Reply 20):

I've tried to explain it many times, some are turned around. Most people simply do not understand why we have them, much less why we use them religiously. I get it though, if you don't grow up with it, it's something you'll never understand about other societies...

Actually the signs were installed in the toilet stalls at Narita International Airport because so many people would stand on the seat (like the non-flush hole in the floor) and squat. Causing the constant replacement of seats.

The european obsession/love affair with smoking. The next time someone tells me that Europeans are so much smarter than Americans, I will point out the fact that Europe still has a greater percentage of smokers than the U.S., even after knowing that cigarettes and tobacco cause lung cancer. It's also more expensive to smoke in Europe than in the U.S., so more people pay more for the privilege of increasing their risk of lung cancer. Go figure.

There are lots of aspects of the muslim world that I don't understand (not out of bigotry, of course), and I wish I could ask someone about them, but I'm so afraid of broaching the topic for fear of being considered a bigot. There's no bias--I'm just purely curious as to why certain things are the way they are.

In regards to touts in Bali and in other parts of SE Asia--I have been travelling in the region for six weeks, and will be here for two more weeks, and while touts are certainly annoying and pest-like, I'd much rather deal with people trying to sell me things than people who are outright begging and, in some cases, demanding i give them money--at least the touts are trying to make somewhat of an honest living--if you can call overcharging tourists an honest living.

That's what I was getting at. I should've said ASIAN toilets are not the same as western toilets.

Another example

Apparently according to research, squat toilets are much more efficient at removing waste from the body, so to speak. Although they are not arthritis/elderly/handicapped friendly

Other societies? Try my own. I don't understand why Canada and the US are so prudish, try to censor as much as possible, and is over run by PC. Also, why is alcohol over here such a taboo? Compared to European countries such as Germany, France, Holland, etc. In France they teach their kids to drink responsibly when young(at least that's what I've heard).

Also, why is alcohol over here such a taboo? Compared to European countries such as Germany, France, Holland, etc. In France they teach their kids to drink responsibly when young(at least that's what I've heard).

Because idiotic kids nowadays don't know how to drink.

Kids nowadays drink for the sole purpose of getting wasted. There was a day and age when a beer or two was enough to satisfy most. But now it seems as if a keg isn't enough for a 2 person party

And yes I've gotten thoroughly wasted once or twice, but some people do it religiously every freaking weekend. Stupid, irresponsible, and pointless, IMO.

But yes, the US is overrun with prudes. Another thing I don't get is bible-thumpers and people that worship their favorite politicians as much as they worship in church.

Based on my experience, many things are noticeably worse in Rome.

I saw some clips on The Soup, and it is definitely high up there on the WTF meter

Yeah, I don't get it either. But as long as the kids truly want to do it and aren't being forced by their parents, I supposed I can look the other way.

Most of them don't bother waiting for the weekend.

I wonder how many kids this is the case for, though. Sad.

Another thing about Mexico - Telemundo. It's the funniest crap to watch, and I don't speak a lick of Spanish. The women, god, their make-up is SO overdone and it perpetuates EVERY stereotype Americans have of Mexico.

Doesn't Telemundo produce its programs in the US? (same as Univision...)

Eurovision brought us ABBA in 1974 and made them known to the world.
Listening to ABBA makes me happy and cheerful. They are wonderful.

Thank you Eurovision!

Well I am going to start with my own country. Since the very day I have opened my eyes I have seen a line up outside Tim Hortons in each and every canadian city I have been to coast to coast! Why the hell do people waste money on that crap coffee? The doughnuts are alright though.

Gun culture in the US, why on earth would you want a society where anyone could be armed? I sure as hell would not feel safe walking on a street knowing that there are probably a bunch of folks with concealed weapons right next to me. Here in canada we dont have guns yet everyday gets through their lives just fine.

Trucks in Alberta and Texas! Why oh why do you need that monster when you never use it in the way it was meant to be?

Japan I just find totally weird and here is why:

They're not    In the Nordic countries, they're generally black or dark blue with yellow text.

Sure, we're concerned for our lives. Just not as concerned as saving 9 bucks on a roundtrip to Ft. Myers.

Mostly the scumbags and the guidos. According to my younger sister, it is noticeably worse in Rome and some other European locales.

My little sister is in Spain now, and she says the same thing. She's often afraid to walk the two blocks from the Metro to her apartment alone because of the things she has called out to her.

I have a special place in my heart for his music. But only because of how hilarious his music videos are and how funny his voice is.

This is the one thing in the USA that has always disgusted me. A huge part of my college experience was being very much in disbelief at some of the things I saw, and the way many people I knew acted (don't worry Harry, you're not included in that. I didn't hang out with you enough to know if you disgust me or not! haha)

Cheerful, sugary... but at least its ABBA so I'll let them get away with it!

Arranged marriage - In various societies. Someone picks out my spouse? What if they are ugly as sin or stupid as a fence post?

I'm not married, and am dating someone I met myself, but arranged marriages are often misunderstood. The vast majority of folks (men and women), at least in India, are not railroaded into marrying someone against their will. The system instead works as a community network that attempts to match up men and women, who are then given the choice of deciding whom they want. The more eligible ones frequently spurn dozens of options before deciding who they click with, get to know them, and move forward.

Sure there are extreme cases, and those are the only ones that get reported. No one bothers to write about the normal side of arranged marriage for the simple reason that it is not pressworthy; sensationalism is. There's nothing wrong with this system as such; it is just one part of keeping a community together. On the other hand, if marriages based on individual choice alone are the way to go, why does the US have such a high divorce rate ?

She should learn from her female Spanish classmates / colleagues and turn ice queen when challenged by wolf whistles or cat calls. West African women are also used to very direct approaches by their countrymen and turn extremely cold.

Its fine when it works but in Asian culture there are huge pressures to get married and alot dont have any choice. These pressures are also evident in Asian communities in the UK also.
