David Letterman 5/24, Oceanic Airlines

Tue May 25, 2010 3:51 am

Did anyone else watch tonight's opening monologue?
Letterman said something like " it used to be a mini-golf field but now I found something else to put all my money in..." and they showed a pic of an Oceanic Airlines plane (twin engine) broken in half, midair. It must be a "Lost" thing, but this plane had a Star Alliance logo by the front door.
Any legal issues there?

If it's for parody, which it pretty much is, there isn't a whole lot of legal recourse. Plus I think Star Alliance has better things to do than sue the Worldwide Pants off of David Letterman for one joke.

Chances are the Star Alliance logo was left on the airplane from whatever photo they Photoshopped the gag from.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

Looks very similar to the photo of the Boeing 777-200 on AC website.

Plane shown in the video appears to be on the same bank angle as in the photo, and would explain the placement of the Star Alliance logo. Also, the cloud cover below is identical to that in the video. Other things to note are similar shadows on the nose of the aircraft, cockpit windows, #1 engine in the exact same spot in both images.

I agree, especially because Letterman made no reference to Star Alliance or the logo (positive or negative). If he would have, than they might have grounds for suing Letterman.

Edited to add video screenshot for comparison.

I think you would have to be an Anutter to catch it.
If I were to ask family members or friends what the symbol was, I think most would be hard pressed to know what they logo means.
Also, it is clearly a spoof refering to Lost, so I would say that they won't pursue anything.

I guess my question would be as to how, casually, the forward cargo door is, casually, dropping out suitcases.

How dramatic! haha

No. Mostly due to the fact that no one watching the show, apart from a bunch of aviation nerds on A.net like us, even noticed the Star Alliance logo on the aircraft...

Now, back to Ebay, I'm looking for a life...
I'll do my own airline. With Blackjack. And hookers. In fact, forget the airline.

Oceanic!?
Wasn't that the Airline name used in the movie "Passenger 57"? If not, I'm sure it was used in a movie I have seen.
When in doubt, flat out!

That's the movie. And it was actually pretty good indeed.
