How To Get From Shannon To Dublin

Thu May 27, 2010 12:22 am

The first week of next month I'm embarking on a trip to Dublin. The non-rev gods aren't on my side for the flight loads to Dublin on the night that I'm departing, but everywhere else (SNN, LHR, AMS) looks fine. I would much prefer to fly to Shannon and then make my way down to Dublin. Upon doing some research, it appears that there aren't any flights from SNN to DUB. Is that correct? Can someone help with that? Any small airlines that fly between the two airports?

Your best bet in Ireland is to rent a car, unless you're just staying in Dublin

I am quite sure there are regularly scheduled bus service between Shannon and Dublin. I suspect it may be a cheaper option although it might take 6-8 hours.
Please note as to car rentals in Ireland: Rep. of Ireland law doesn't allow you to use your credit card to cover the LDW. With some companies, you may not take a car from the the Republic into UK-Northern Ireland or the reverse. They also tend to be quite steep in pricing, especially in the Summer months.

It's about a 5 hour trip on Bus Eireann - you'll have to change buses in Limerick. Alternately, you can catch a bus from the airport to Limerick (~45 minutes), then take the train to Dublin (~2 hours 25 minutes).

Drive up the road from Shannon to Limerick via Six Mile Bridge and then from Limerick get on the N7 via Nenagh, Roscrea and Kildare. From Roscrea to Dublin it is now a motorway. The road from Shannon to Limerick is a dual carriageway as is most of the N7.

All Irish car rental companies I used during the last 8 years demanded credit cards and refused cash deposits. This was one of the major reasons for me to get a credit card.

Aer Lingus fly DUB-SNN with A330s..... currently showing as 60 Euros each way a random date next month. The flights appear to be every second day, however.

Get the airport bus from Shannon Airport to Limerick Train station, then get the train to Dublin Heuston, much nicer.

There are a few options:

- Aer Lingus have 5 weekly flights on the Shannon-Dublin route and times are fairly restrictive (departing early morning). As well as that fares are quite high at a fixed price of about €60 one way. Flight time is 50 minutes.

- Get the direct bus from Shannon to Galway and fly Aer Arann Galway-Dublin. They have 4 daily flights and fares can be quite good depending on when you book. Flight time is 45 minutes and the bus from Shannon to Galway is 1 hour, 50 minutes.

- Get the bus from Shannon to Limerick city centre (25 minutes) and change on to the #12 bus to Dublin. Altogether your journey will be about 5 hours.

- Get the bus from Shannon to Limerick city centre and get on the train from Limerick to Dublin. It's worth noting that the bus station and train station in Limerick are at the same place. Total journey time this way is about 3.5 hours.

(Personally I'd take one of the flying options   )

This tread came almost as ordered...
I'm visiting Dublin at about the same time, and was wondering how to get to Foynes
(you know that place where Irish Coffee is claimed to be invented) -to see the Flyingboat Museum.
Now I can just reverse the information given here...

One more question: I have a friend meeting me. Is there only one exit from customs if I'm arriving on a CO flight?

Hi Scooter. Easiest way is to get the train from Dublin Heuston to Limerick. If you book your seat online on irishrail.ie, you can often get a one way for 10 euro. Then, in Limerick (NOT Limerick Junction), simply get the Coach service to Foynes. You can ask at the info desk at the combined rail/bus station in Limerick.

Yes, there is only one customs exit at every Irish airport terminal.

Also, if A318, if you do decide to go down the rental car route, personally I would ignore the advice given abive about driving via Limerick and the N7 at the moment. There is a hell of a lot of construction on building the new M7 motorway at the moment, and there is a faster way which I use (not may others do, so it may be handy for the rest of you too!)

From Shannon airport, take the N19. This will lead you to an interchange with the N18 and M18. Take the M18 direction Galway. Stay on the M18 (it eventually becomes N18 again) until you reach the town of Gort. At Gort, turn off onto the N66 route to Loughrea.

At Loughrea, follow the signs for the N6 or M6 to Dublin. This will lead you after about 3 miles to the new M6 Motorway which goes all the way to Dublin. Just note there are 2 tolls on this route, costing 1.80 eur and 2.90 eur for the second one, so have some change, or a credit card.

This way, Shannon to Dublin can be driven in about 2 hours 15 minutes.

Be advised that there are lots of roadworks and new motorways being built all over Ireland at present, and the Roadmappers actually cant keep up with the new road openings, so each time a map is published, it is out of date almost immediatly. But, follow the directions above and you wont go wrong...
