Huge Sinkhole In Guatemala....

Tue Jun 01, 2010 1:02 am

This thing is bloody HUGE! It's bigger than a street intersection... Incredible.

WTF??? That picture must be a fake. I've seen sinkholes before but I have never seen one that looks like that.

WOW

That is amazing !

Looks like there may have been a mine or something else there long ago, as the sides of the hole are very neat and circular.

Got to be something along those lines being that circular. No indication of how deep the hole is either.

Something doesn't jive here. The sinkhole itself is real, but has been there for a few years already, I don't think it had anything to do with this latest storm from what I researched... these articles are dated in 2007...

EDIT: Disregard, looks like guatemala not only has one but TWO of them  eyepopping

Quote:
In February 2007 a large sinkhole opened in a poor neighborhood in northeast Guatemala city, killing three people. The sinkhole was 100.5 m (330 ft) deep, and apparently was created by fluid from a sewer dissolving the rock underneath. As a result, one thousand people have been evacuated from the area.[20] The sink hole has since been mitigated and plans to develop on the site have been proposed. Another sinkhole developed in May 2010 after Tropical Storm Agatha which was larger than a street intersection. It engulfed a three story building and a house.[21

No, it is definitely real. This photo and this other photo show different angles...

Indeed, not the first time it happens, and not in the same place. First one has been filled up since...
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

What on earth was in the sewer that could "dissolve" the rock. A water leak washing sand and filler away I could understand.

I wish it were. I really do. So do a lot of folks in Guatemala.

Ok, it's real. But what is that blackness at the bottom? Is it water? Or does it open into some huge underground cave (I understand that there are huge cave systems in that part of the world)?

Yep, it's a future lake. One of those opened up in Florida when I lived there. Small ones happen all the time but that's a pretty fair sized one.

I was more impressed by the depth than the width of the sinkhole. Interestingly, there don't seem to be any severed unground lines (power, water, electric).

Limestone is relatively easily dissolved by even mildly acidic water.
We had a similar, though not quite as dramatic, sinkhole appear here in Birmingham not too long ago-

*Note- As seems to be the case with all reporting these days, there's a glaring error: The wrong house is marked on the map in the news story. The house that, after standing +/- 80 years on the same spot, wound up falling into the sinkhole is located diagonally across the intersection from the one marked, on the northwest corner of 8th Avenue West and 16th Street. Also, since Google Maps is the linked image source, the now-gone house is shown still standing. However, if you look it up on Terraserver and switch between the 2007 and 2009 images, you can see 1600 8th Avenue West (and the house next door) go from being there to being vacant lots.
