Sarkozy Bans Tall Bodyguards

Wed Jun 09, 2010 6:13 am

French President Nicolas Sarkozy does not like having bodyguards taller than him. This is after he asked that lecterns should be made shorter in the places where he speaks. The man obviously likes to have things done "his way".

Isn't this engouraging discrimination?

From the Telegraph:

Tall security agents have been discreetly advised not to apply for a job guarding Nicolas Sarkozy, police sources have claimed.
...
A police source told Le Parisien that "there's no point recruiting supermen" as "large-sized" candidates stood little chance of being taken on.

His wife Carla Bruni (ex-model) has to wear flat shoes in his company, so I´ve heard...

Sarkozy's short man complex has been well known for years; So too Rupert Murdoch and MadameConcorde's distaste for all things in the French Republic.

No, it is not. Take the airlines for example. They have specific heights that an individual has to be in order to qualify. That has been going on for years and years. Nothing new there. No one has complained.

I never thought of that. Thank you for telling me.

As to things French, I would rather see Bernadette Chirac married to Sarkozy and Jacques Chirac matched with Carla Bruni. I think they would match much much better and would make quite an interesting swap.

Berrnadette is very very bright and quite an expert at Political Science. She might help Sarkozy a lot on the job while Ms. Bruni could just enjoy life with the retired president. He is such a happy camper, a socialite with an acute sense of humour. There would not even be any size conflicts there.

Yeah no kidding. He's got the double whammy going on, short and not good looking. I almost feel sorry for him.

That's just sad. Perhaps he should have married someone closer to his height if it bothers him so much. Just saying...

Why can't this guy just be comfortable with his height? I cannot remember how many photos I have seen of him standing on things or on his toes while next to other people.

SAA has minimum height requirements for cabin crew, if you can't reach the emergency equipment in the overhead you're not going to be much use when you come to do the job that cabin crew say they are really there for.

I don't know about weight requirements here in the US, but airlines certainly have minimum height requirements for cabin crew. In fact, I know that some (maybe all) regionals even have maximum height requirements.

Sarkozy, Bruni Ban Locals From French Riviera Beach: Report

Signs were posted on May 13 reading "No Entry" on the beach frequented by Sarkozy and Bruni, and policemen and cameras have been monitoring the area. Bruni's family has a holiday home nearby, but not their own beach.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/0...-ban-locals_n_606016.html?ir=World

They want the people's votes but when you step foot on "their" beach they become repressive
Every time Sarkozy and wife go to their residence in Cap Nègre, the whole area gets locked up from public view. Flyovers are not allowed and yacht circulation is regimented.

This is the Sarkozy/Bruni property (pictures) a private hide away near Le Lavandou.

http://www.lelavandou.eu/plages/plage11.htm

According to French Law (Loi Littoral) beaches are a part of the public maritime domain, same with the coast and nobody can be denied any access to them.

That's not really a fair comparison. If you're 4ft tall (for example) you're simply not going to be able to carry out the job of a flight attendant without the possibility of compromising safety.

In contrast, what is physically stopping a tall bodyguard from performing their job in this case? I can't see any disadvantage for being tall.

Perhaps I'm missing something here? To me though, it seems that Mr. Sarkozy is being his own worst enemy by strengthening the arguably false perception that taller guys are more intimidating or stronger in terms of appearance than their shorter counterparts. This may be a view that many share, but does it really have any basis? Surely it's entirely subjective? Either way, he doesn't appear to be setting a good example in this case and I think MadameConcorde's question is a good one. He should be someone who people can look up to and admire. (especially for those who are sensitive about their own height.) Instead, he's just sending out the wrong message.

USA
Skywest has a height limit of 5'8" or something in that neighborhood

Some airlines have specific numbers other have you demonstrate an ability to do a height related task like reach into an OHB mock-up to retrieve a fire extinguisher from it's brackets.

Well, its Sarko who´s the outsized man in the game here, not his guard. To be tall is perfectly normal for a bodyguard. Or does Sarkozy think another dwarf could protect him in case of emergency? Hilarious, his Napoleon complex.
It seems to be tradition in France, who´s greatest, sorry, I should better say, most powerful men were short. Roi Soleil Louis XIV wore high heels to look into the eyes of his court members, and the greatest war criminal before Hitler, Napoleon, of cause was even shorter than Sarko.

As to the restrictions on access to beaches when he or his wife are on them, that may be reasonable due to necessary security needs. I don't think you want anyone attacking or possibly killing them.

Along with many other demands from specifications of his issued aircraft, to decorations in his assigned homes, to this sillyness of no tall bodyguards, Sarkozy just comes off like a spoiled fool. Such foolish and costly demands are the kind of things that turn voters against you, especially by opposition politicans and in times where there are too many unemployed and struggling to survive is not a good public image.

I can well understand him. Those supertall musclechaps would be unnerving to me as well. Bodyguards not 180 to 210 cms tall can do the job as well

bodyguards of between 1.70 and 1.75 can do the job in question as well. Persons of 1.70 are not dwards. I some years ago in Windsor visited an exhibition about the royals (in Windsor rail-station) where the body-height of the main royals was shown. I was absolutely surprised to see that most of them are between 1.68 and 1.78 only, while I before had had the impression they were all at least 1.80 . I then carefully looked at some photomaterial around there and as another surprise realised that the bodyguards clearly were (are) between 1.70 and 1.78 also. If you look at leading politicians in the world and their bodyguards, you will see that the guards generally are of similar height than the VIP in question, or only marginally taller.
