GTA 4 And My PC; Will It Work?

Fri Jun 18, 2010 9:21 am

Hello guys,

GTA 4 has been released quite a while now(I believe 2008) (and GTA 5 will be coming this fall?) I still want to buy it, I think  .
The question is: is my laptop(yep, no desktop) good enough??
I bought mine in 2007 and at that time I believed it was a pretty good one!
my specs:

Intel core duo T7300@2,00 Ghz, 32 bits, vista,
workmem: 2gig.
4,8 on windows PI :P
Nvidia Geforce 8600 GS (I believe 512 dedicated)
(enough HDD available etc)

BTW: FSX works and looks good at ultra high setting although my laptop is getting pretty hot!

I hope you can help me out,

Regards, FJWH

Is it only the video card it's complaining about?

Because if it is, I'd say give it a try anyway. If you're able to run FSX on high/ultra settings, GTA4 should be a piece of cake!

FSX is very hard on the CPU and HDD, which is quite different from most games (that want above all a good graphic card). However I don't know for GTA4, I do know that it's not very optimized. Maybe you can get a demo ?

I occasionally visit a laptop forum where people discuss gaming performance, and many were complaining that the game ran at a crawl on much higher end systems than yours. Apparently it is very CPU dependent, and anything less than a quad core or a 2.6 ghz dual core or above will cause a decent amount of lag, and that's with an 8800GTX, much less an 8600 GS. I've got an 8600M GT DDR3 in my laptop and a slightly better processor, T7500, I tried the demo, it was almost unplayable. Shame, as the game just appears to be very very poorly optimized for the PC when they ported it from consoles.

I can think of much much better games than GTA4 that won't suck up so much hardware resources and still have better graphics, but yeah, your computer won't cut it. It will probably be a slide show at anything over medium quality settings.
