Ideas For A NZ Budget Holiday

Fri Jun 25, 2010 1:51 am

I'm planning on a New Zealand adventure sometime between now and the summer(their summer). I'm looking for some ideas on a budget holiday. Since I work for the airlines, airfare is a non factor. Planning on an ID90 from SYD-AKL. I want to tour the N Island and maybe make it down to Lands End on the S Island(but not the most important objective). Hoping for 10 days. Where should I go and what are the places to find the best deals and the best time to go. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

First of all, I'll make it clear that there are plenty of things to do in both islands. It really depends on what you like doing as to whether you'd like it better doing stuff in the north or south. Seeing you only have 10 days, I'd definitely want to choose a certain area. Do you like wine? Adventure? Scenery (LOTR-esque)? Hiking/tramps? Culture? What did you think about doing? Jotting some ideas down here will go a long way in trying to figure out what'd be best for you. There are some nice walks right over the country and it may come down to how long you have to spend in such areas.
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

10 days would be just enough for one or other island but no way both.

Don't go north from Auckland, it's nice but a fair drive up and back and your time is limited.

From Auckland you should tour the Coromandel penninsula for 2 nights then around East Cape to Napier/Hastings for another 2 nights. From there come back west to National Park Village via Taupo and stay here for 2 nights and walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (NZs best one day walk).

2 hours north from here is the Waitomo caves and 1 hour south the National Army Museum at Waiouru.

From Waiouru south to Wellington there is nothing to see but Wellington is worth 2 or even 3 nights but best make it mid-week when you are there.

A nice finish would be a ferry trip across to Picton on the other island for the day - return the same day or even stay the night. Fly back to Wellington from Picton 'airport' on sounds air shouild interest you.

Fly back to Auckalnd from Wellington.

I am from Picton and now live in National Park owning Howards Lodge but I'm not biased.
