Canada Day Playlist - Help Needed

Sun Jun 27, 2010 5:32 am

I'm hosting a Canada Day party (of course on July 1) and I need help making a good playlist for the party.

Trying to stick with Canadian artists, I'm looking for some catchy/upbeat music, but I'm open to about anything. I've read so many suggestions from Google searching, but they're not too helpful. So far, I've got:

- Down With Webster "Your Man" and "Rich Girl$"
- Hedley "Cha-Ching"
- Andrew Gunadie and Julia Bentley "Canadian, Please"
- Classified "Oh...Canada"
- Nikki Yanovsky "I Believe" and "Cool My Heels"
- Annie Villeneuve "J'imagine"

Maybe
- Celine Dion "Taking Chances" and "You and I"
- Nelly Furtado "Mi Plan"
- Young Artists for Haiti "Wavin' Flag"

I'm also looking for good GBS (Great Big Sea), Tegan and Sara, Feist, The Weakerthans and The Tragically Hip songs. Also, I think the playlist needs more French songs.

At least that's the first thing I think of when I think of Canadian music. (it doesn't happen often)

This starts and ends with Rush, not crappy rap/hip-hop music.

SHAME ON YOU!
How can you leave out the best rock band ever that is from Canada?
That would be RUSH!

Another great Canadian would be Gino Vannelli.

I'd also recommend Bachman Turner Overdrive, Triumph, April Wine and Saga.
Oh and Bryan Adams too.

There are 3 boxsets of CD's called "Oh What A Feeling" they were from the 25th, 30th and 35th Anniversaries of the Juno Awards. Look those up if you want a decent list of canadian artists.

Where's Neil Young, Susan Aglukark, Lightfoot, Barenaked Ladies, Gowan, Tom Cochrane, Doug & the Slugs, Diana Krall, kd Lang, Blue Rodeo and what the above have already mentioned.....

I find that 'Canadian, Please' song embarrassing, actually.
I think there's too much good Canadian music to be summed up in a playlist, and it sounds like you like newer things, which I don't, so I guess I'm not very useful. Nevertheless I would submit this excellent list, which spans a good deal of time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/50_Tracks:_The_Canadian_Version

And since you seem to like dancy things, I would also remind you that the 'Safety Dance' is Canadian, too!

Please don't!

Nah. The Arcade Fire is from Quebec, that's good enough...

Don't include RUSH. We have much better music to showcase.

Some bands to include:

Sunriser
Zeus
54-40 - The song Casual Viewing is excellent.
The Tragically Hip -- The song Bobcaygeon is probably the most Canadian song ever.
Arcade Fire -- Intervention or Rebellion (Lies) are both great songs (as are all A.F. songs)
Joel Plaskett
Bell Orchestre
Still Life Still
Sam Roberts
Rufus Wainright -- Best version of Hallelujah probably ever.
KD Lang -- Another excellent cover of the aformentioned song
The Guys
Blue Peter -- Nice 80's band from Toronto. Don't Walk Past is a great 80's song.
Crystal Castles
Islands
K-Os
Men Without Hats -- As mentioned earlier, Safety Dance
Metric
The New Pornographers
The Paper Cranes -- Cavalier and Chivalry's Dead are both excellent songs
The Diodes -- Tired of Waking Up Tired
The Dishes

Hopefully that helped! Please though, don't include any RUSH or Nickelback. I'd prefer Celine to those hacks (Superfly will probably kill me for saying that).

Thanks for celebrating Canada's birthday!

Celine Dion and Anne Murray should stay off the list.

I can't believe everyone forgot about this one:

Maybe some by Nickelback. Rockstar would be my first choice.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! So far, this is what I have:

"YYZ" by RUSH (a lot of their songs stuck to me, but this one the most, so I'd enjoy more after the party haha)
"You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morrisette
"Feel it in my Bones" - Tegan and Sara
"Ironic" by Alanis Morrisette
"Oh...Canada" by Classified
"Canadian, Please" yep still keeping it. It's kinda fun and catchy
"Mi Plan" by Nelly Furtado (multiculturalism   )
"Taking Chances" by Celine Dion
"You and I" by Celine Dion
"I Believe" and "J'imagine" by Nikki Yanovsky and Annie Villenueve respectfully
"Wavin Flag" Collective Artists
"Your Man" by Down With Webster
"Rich Girl$" DWW
"Cha-Ching" by Hedley

and will definitely getting more when I get more money in my card haha.

Quoting Superfly (Reply 3):
Bachman Turner Overdrive,

Yep! I was amazed to find out "Taking Care of Business" was Canadian haha

This was a great help! I was looking for something like this! Thanks!

And I'm also divided over a Great Big Sea song: "Ordinary Day" or "Excursion around the Bay"? I'm leaning excursion just because I learned its a traditional folk song

How about "Echo Beach" by Martha and the Muffins. Always a hit here in Australia - one of the few Canadian cousins I'd gladly listen to. Please keep pretty much all of your mainstreams acts (and I'm happy for much the same to be said about Aussie acts).

But Martha Wainright can visit as often as she likes!

Ayn Rand was a complete turd and I just look past Neil's infatuation with her philosophy.
Yet may Rush fans became Ayn Rand fans simply because of Neil Peart.

As I did briefly!

Emphasis on "briefly", as Objectivism, as a practical way of living, is a non-starter, much like her opposite, Marxism.

Found another band to check out - "Chixdiggit", somewhere in my travels I acquired their CD "Born on the First of July", now if that isn't Canadian I don't know what is! Haven't listened to it in forever, so I can't remember if they're any good or not?

17 posts and no one mentioned Kim Mitchell or Loverboy?

"Patio Lanterns" and "Everybody's Working For The Weekend" are musts for any Canadian summer party, especially Canada Day.

For Tom Cochrane, "Life Is A Highway" is by far his best summer song IMHO.

Lee Aaron, Glass Tiger, Honeymoon Suite, Chilliwack, The Northern Pikes, Platinum Blonde, Helix, The Grapes Of Wrath, Stompin' Tom Conners, Great Big Sea, Jeff Healey, Crash Test Dummies, Corey Hart, Our Lady Peace, Jann Arden, Bare Naked Ladies, Nelly Furtado, Avril Lavigne, Shania Twain, Paul Anka, Anne Murray, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Cockburn, Trooper, Harlequin, Prism all have great songs and should be looked into as well

Sarah McLaughlin
Angel

(My cousin) Andrea Revel (Available on iTunes!)
White Noise

Stan Rogers
Barrett's Privateers
Northwest Passage

Not that I'm an expert on this but I'd add in a French Canadian performer or two:
Robert Charlebois (ardent federalist) - "Independantriste" and his most famous, "Lindberg"
Lindberg (And it has an aviation theme!)
