All I can say is I'm in a state of shock. This man is a broadcast legend.

I just saw that on twitter. Very surprising but he is getting up there in age. Good luck to him!

Been rumored for a couple weeks now here in Hollywood. The man is up there in age, and is going through some family issues currently which clearly played into the decision.

Reportedly Piers Morgan possibly is the person to replace him.

Otherwise heard Ryan Seacrest might be in the running having gotten a plug from Larry himself in the last week.

Oh good god! Am I the only person in this world who thinks that Ryan Seacrest is nothing but an overhyped, overrated, under-talented hack?

No. He has no expertise, doesn't do anything, and furthermore isn't qualified to do anything. Same with Oprah.

It is probably about time to move to retirement. As noted, he has had to deal with a number of personal and family issues, I bet he has some signficant heatlth problems and at his age, why work most days of the year on a show that has slumping ratings. Happy Retirement !

Larry retiring is not a shock I mean Rachel Maddow is beating him in the ratings. I mean yea your career is over.

Good. Larry is a bad interviewer scared of asking tough questions.

A much better choice. His first guest should be Jeremy Clarkson!

Like all of our career politicians should do, retire. It is time Larry. As we all learn, shortly it will be Larry Who?

I don't think he retired voluntarily. I believe he was forced to retire because of the bad ratings. The press down here has been talking about that all the time, and that CNN would probably cancel his show.

I've never been a big fan of Larry but after watching his show following the death of the Crocodile Hunter in 2006, I do believe he is a class act. I also believe he is amongst the last of the old style talk show hosts in the style of Edward R Murrow who sit down one on one with their guests to do indepth interviews. I do think however that his retirement is a sign of the times. People no longer want a straight sit down interview show where they actually have to sit down and watch the whole hour. The other shows besides Larry on CNN and other networks that i've seen are driven more and more towards a multi-tasking generation that wants everything boiled down to a 5 minute video clip then onto the next thing.

As was previously mentioned, I can believe that it was not entirely Larry's decision. I would hazard a guess that his bosses at CNN approached him about maybe changing the nature of the show, making it more clip oriented and less guest dependant. When Larry refused, the question became when he was announcing his retirement. I'm sure whomever they bring in will be much more comfortable delivering the kind of fast paced, clip oriented show the viewers have indicated they want. I'm sure Ryan Seacrest would be perfect in that role, but something would have to give. I can't believe he can do three things at once: host American Idol, host his daily radio show plus take on a full time network talk show. My guess would be that if CNN offers him enough money, he'd walk away from the rigors of American Idol. And yes, Ryan Seacrest is little more than a talking head, but that's apparently what the viewers want.

About time... He's been irrelevant for quite some time, and is a terrible interviewer.

I couldn't agree more. The only more irrelevant person on television is Andy Rooney.

Both should have been put out to pasture long ago.

Or Ian Hislop. Then again, I doubt anyone outside the UK have any idea who he is, and why a meeting between him and Piers Moron would set new standards for venom

One of the main reasons why I stopped watching American Idol.

I guess they simply kept him because he was an icon of CNN. I mean, when I heard the letters "CNN", I instantly thought of "Breaking News" and Larry King.

You are right though, the last time I saw Larry King, his show was bland, and I sincerely doubt that even with a new host, they'll keep the old format. I mean, most of the time he wasn't there anymore, or he just repeated guests too many times.

I couldn't help but wonder after his work on the Miracle on the Hudson how much longer he would last, I thought he was interviewing very poorly and he didn't do the greatest job on probably one of his biggest stories. In fact one of the woman I believe the FA in the back who broke her leg didn't look comfortable at all and he did little to put her at ease. It's amazing he has lasted this long and I never saw why he was so revered.

I propose we start a facebook page getting Nick on as Kings replacement!
