My New Lust After Car - What's Yours?

Thu Jul 01, 2010 9:18 pm

Today I saw one of these

http://morepetrol.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/morgan-aeromax1.jpg

So stunning I followed it for about 20 minutes, was 30 minutes late for work, spent over an hour googling it this morning. Just so stunning, British registered driving in Norway, I never thought I would ever get to see one here in Norway.

Not my type of car at all. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess.

Then I'd rather have one of these:

Yes the blonde is quite nice... the car not so much.

As a car guy there isn't anything contemporary out there that I lust after. Which makes me kind of sad. All those exotics and such seem like such unobtanium that I don't get all that excited or care much about. As a counterpoint I am rather interested by the new Ford Fiesta... think about that one for a while.

I wish I was 8 again so I could stare at the poster of the Countach and Testarossa on my bedroom wall again.

Now a later vintage W113 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is on my list of must-buys when I win the lotto.

And one of the most beautiful cars ever to hit the streets, the Aston Martin DB9

and it is in fact designed by a danish designer named Henrik Fisker - now owner of Fisker Automotive

The new McLaren MP4-12C. I want mine in Carbon Black, with Black wheels, stealthed out, and all the carbon fiber option boxes I can check.

Here is the configurator if you want to have some fun.
http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/uk/default.aspx#/configurator

Also, if trucks count, how about the new International Lonestar? I saw one of these on the road, I thought it was a concept or a one off custom, but then I saw another and looked it up. They have a pretty cool configurator too.

I tend to prefer rare, somewhat unheard-of cars:

http://www.koenigsegg.com/imageserver.php?format=0x370zoom&img=models_ccxr_3.jpg

Always had a thing for Koenigseggs.

As for a classic, I would kill to get one of these:

http://www.scorpiocars.net/images/Mercedes-Benz/1955%20Mercedes-Benz%20300SLR%20Coupe_4.jpg

Some of these 300SLRs have been sold for more than a Bugatti Veyron

And for a car I could realistically get:

Yes, that sums it up!

Ever since I saw that car I want to have it – what a well-designed compact car. Years ago I couldn't have imagined I'd ever like a VW... but the design has changed for the better. Great assortment to choose from, like

Quoting Sabena332 (Reply 8):
the new Touareg

or its smaller "sister" Tiguan that I'd lean towards.
It will be a couple of years until I'll be able to afford a car of my own, and most likely I won't be able to spend too much money on it. Anyway, if my parents decide to buy a new one, I'll advise them to take VW into consideration... these designs and the associated quality with the brand are reason enough not to ignore them.

Blue Ferraris are just cool.

R26.R I'd get mine minus the stickers though.

2) How about a green hearse--this green 1978 Ford LTD conversion?

3) Also, there is a lovely new Rolls-Royce that I would not mind having, in green inside and out:

The new 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost, available in green (exterior and interior):

They test-drove that car on the runway at the airport I work at. Runway is only some 1200m, so they had to slow down when they reached 350km/h. Still, 0-200km/h in 10 sec is pretty impressive. Great engine sound too. Only 9 of this model in Norway, so I was quite lucky to get to see it in action really.

A 300 SLC can't do 350, the probably got it up to 250ish then had to jump on the brakes, 1200 metres isn't long enough for a top speed run with enough room to brake. I think it was 5th Gear, they couldn't hit top speed on Bruntingthorpes 3000m runway in the Bugatti Veyron.

IMO, that’s the cool thing with this car. A big (over 5 metres long) car which takes 5.4 seconds to 100 km/h and is an Audi with the famous Quattro-system.... and has a manual tranny, which nobody would guess. A nice sounding V8, too.

5.4 secs with manual, 6.8 secs with automatic. Helloooo!  Tiptronic or no tiptronic, either new automatics or DSG as two-pedalled cars.

Okay I get your point.

My reasons:

· Looks well
· Is big, and has got a lot of space
· Audi ... Quattro
· Manual tranny = fun
· Is quick, no sports car however, but quick enough

And what’s not real about this car as to being a limousine? Too hard suspension?

Too hard suspension, probably yes.

Only as smooth gearshifts as the driver wants to make, so it is easy to mess up the limousine feel to the driving experience

Perhaps the fact that this is not a limousine but a full sized sedan?

Same thing.

Quoting AirPacific747 (Reply 40):
Too hard suspension, probably yes.

Only as smooth gearshifts as the driver wants to make, so it is easy to mess up the limousine feel to the driving experience

Haha!

For a car its age, it looks OK. I prefer the 90s BMW 7series though, or the S-class

The 90’s 7er looks just fine, fortunately one can get the 750 with a manual transmission so I think it’s just fine too.    But the S8 looks cooler. Quoting AirPacific747 (Reply 40):
Rear wheel drive is more fun IMO

Blah, Quattro is more fun than FWD.

A 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX.

Agreed, although a white ~90 Legacy RS would look nice in my driveway

Or a white Subaru XT

I already have mines.

Your Town Car is quite nice. I saw somebody driving a Mark IV coupe the other evening.... now talk about a big car. It certainly had presence.

Quoting Superfly (Reply 18):
SWEET!!!!
The 1967-19672 Mercedes 280SE convertible is one of very few high-end German cars I like. The 280SE convertible is my favorite among the German cars.

The big Benzes from that era are most certainly collectible and the cabriolets are the most desirable. Though their prices don't reach the heights that the SLs hit. That said with the big Benzes I prefer the following generation, specifically the big 450 SEL 6.9. So add that one to my list.

My mother's 40th Birthday Present was a 1964 230SL. It's cream colored, cream leather interior, teak wood dash, and chocolate brown hard and soft tops.

She still has it today - it's a beautiful car and so much fun to drive. (she says its mine when she's gone)

My father bought it from a guy who was going to restore it, but found out after he brought it over from France that it had been in an accident. A couple of the lines don't match perfectly. But, the biggest reason he didn't restore it was because someone put the 280 engine in it.

I'll see if I can find some pictures.

I'd have to say that my dream car would be some form of kit car, or something I built myself. This car would be similar to the following;

Radical SR8

Osella PA20

Osella PA21/S

Norma M20

Ferrari 312PB, or

Porsche 908/3. Something about the ultra low look of these cars really appeals to me, not to mention they would go like hot s*** off a shovel   !
