Movie 'Airplane' Released 30 Years Ago

Sun Jul 04, 2010 2:20 pm

What is probably the favorite humourus movie of Airliners.net members celebrates it's release 30 years ago this weekend. Here is a link to a slide show of some it's most famous, infimous and funny lines we all love to laugh at.

I love that movie. I have owned it for 24 years and I see a new gag everytime I watch it.

"It's coming right for us!!" *Jumps out window.*

Only one of countless brilliant moments. Shame they don't make films like that anymore. Hot Shots and Naked Gun are other good examples of that style of comedy.

You just walked right into that!

I won't go into any quotes, because I'm sure most of us know (most of it!) by heart, but really, it was a superb movie and bias aside (being an aircraft enthuasiast), its comedy has not been bettered in those thirty years. A superb achievement!

I have a shirt that I wear all the time that says "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley"

One day I was wearing it and I walked into the lounge of my floor in my dorm and they had just started watching Airplane. I took it as a sign to stop working and watch it again

I havent flown in years. Those were single engine fighters this is a four engine jet, its an entirely different kind of flying. The mood in the place was downright ugly, you could count on a fight breaking out just about every night. You didn't walk in there unless you knew how to use your fists. I didn't walk in there looking for love that night, but fate was on my side. I would consider my career complete if someday I could fly with Ted Stricker.

It was funny when I was 7 years old when it came out but I just don't find it funny anymore.

I still find it as funny as I did when I saw it on the big screen in 1980, that said, I usually only watch it once a year.

I suggest watching 'Zero Hour' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051221/ (which Airplane is based upon) and watching Airplane after wards, makes it all the funnier.

It think it's the same with most movies. You shouldn't watch it too often, no matter how much you like it, as you will get tired of it in the end. Haven't seen Airplane for a few years now myself, so maybe it's due on the screen soon at my place.

I have a massive DVD collection (nearing a 1000), however Airplane is one I will pull down once a year, because it still works on so many levels.

Ah, right, and I edited that last post. I just remembered yet another funny line from Leslie Nielson.
Do not bring stranger girt into your room. The stranger girt is dangerous, it will hurt your life.

"Johnny, what can you make of this?" "Oh, this? Well, I can make a hat, or a brooch, or a pterodactyl!"

"Larry, where's the forklift?" "Forklift? It's over there by the baggage loader!" *cut to a shot of one of the gates, and seconds later, a 747 crashes through the window*

Watched it again a couple of days ago. Still funny, and still has little details I had not noticed before. Plus tons of great quotes and scenes of course. (Trying to think of one that hasn't been used here already...)

*Plane on final for emergency landing*
Leslie Nielsen pops his head in the cockpit: "I just want to wish you both good luck, we're all counting on you."
*Plane skids along the runway with sparks and smoke everywhere*
Leslie Nielsen pops his head in the cockpit: "I just want to wish you both good luck, we're all counting on you."
*Plane come to a halt on the runway*
Leslie Nielsen pops his head in the cockpit: "I just want to wish you both good luck, we're all counting on you."

That was one of the best scenes of just about any movie!

Cockpit scene -

Striker: When he hears about this, the s*#t's really going to hit fan.
Scene cuts to the airport office showing an old-style oscillating fan on a desk: SPLAT!

----------------------------------
Craymer driving to the airport (in what appears to be an early-vintage Mustang convertible) with the background scenes (obviously from a sped-up movie screen). In an early scene, a cyclist flips over the car and lands on the ground and the cyclists yells to Craymer, "A*#hole!"

Aircraft cabin, woman's thought: That's funny, he(I forget the character name) never vomits at home

I also love it when that doctor at Mayo has that heart hopping on his desk while he's on the phone.
Doctor: Yes, the heart is right here and it's ready to be transplanted.

Airport Announcement: ...arriving now at Gate 1 SCREEEEEECH!... Gate 2 SCREEEEEECH!... Gate 3 SCREEEEEECH!... Gate 4 SCREEEEEECH!..............Gate 25 SCREEEEEECH!... Gate 26 on so forth.

------------------------------------
Final scene, the guy's still waiting in Striker's parked cab. Passenger is none other than Howard Jarvis, author of California's 1978 Proposition 13.
