East Coast USA Heat Wave

Mon Jul 05, 2010 11:34 am

The Eastern USA, from the Carolinas to New England, back into Ohio since Sunday has entered what is expected to have the worst heat wave the region has seen in many years. Tempatures in many areas, including along the shore/coast, are reaching over 90 F (33 C) and expected to reach to 100 F (38 C) or more, beaking heat records until the weekend. In many areas, high humidity may cause heat index tempatures of 110 F (43 C). While we have much better weather forcasting and ways to prevent major health and death problems from heat waves, the intensity and duration of this heat wave may cause serious problems.

There is no doubt it will affect air travel due to the, causing some flights to have to reduce MTOW and other operational adjusments. One thing I am very concerned with is major electrical service disruptions due to what could be unpresidented demand for electricity to run air conditioners. That incudes fearing a repeat of the August 2003 electrical grid crash (based it is beleived in Ohio) from a heat wave then the region then with many areas of NY City and some other areas facing no power for days.

If you live in an urban area, even in some suburbs, make sure especially that your elderly friends and relatives care are safe, their a/c is working and being used, if necessary are with someone with working a/c, minimise electricty use as much as possible, prepare for a blackout (stock up on food that doesn't need refrigeration, water, batteries for flashlights and radios), put of exerting work outside or in non-air conditioned areas and most of all - keep your 'cool'.

We've had temperatures as high as this, and in some parts of Germany even higher ones, over the last few days. The next heatwave is said to be already underway. The majority of us gets along without air conditioning. Make sure you drink enough water, stay out of the afternoon sun, and do a siesta – that should help to prevent health problems. I enjoy the summer sun, it's well-needed after this year's hard winter.

Not just East Coast USA, it's here in Ontario as well. Humidex yesterday was 36C (~97F), supposed to be 40+ rest of the week. There's also a smog advisory for Southern Ontario, just to make it perfect. We may see some pop-up thunderstorms later in the day every day this week.

We've actually had a bit of a break from the heat here in the Atlanta area. We went close to three weeks (June 11-29) of 90 degree plus days. Since then, we've been at or below the seasonal average. Now if only we'd get some rain.......

We have had several days of 34 C (93 F) here, and more to come, with high humidity. It's quite warm, non really my kind of weather - this year I have finally had an air conditioner installed. I should have done it sooner! Finally I can get some sleep at night.

My bedroom is now at a constant temperature of 22 C (71 F). And no, I don't care if it's un-healthy to have such a big temperature gap between inside and outside - I want to stay fresh

We have temperature in the 35-38° C. range in Sacramento, CA, but then, our humidity is 1/4 that what people experience on the East Coast. As such, I can actually go outside and not feel like a run-down battery even after 30 minutes outside.

I am a transplant from Minnesota, who currently lives in the Houston area I can attest to that statement. I also spent 1 summer in Phoenix in the early 90s and while it was unbearable, and frankly it can not touch Houston's heat and humidity combination.

I so hope we don't have a repeat of that...I was in the City when that happened...had to throw out all the food. Although I did get a lot of time to catch up on my reading.

Climate change is not about temperatures rising and summers getting hotter. It's about having more weather extremes - heat waves without breaks in the summer, droughts becoming more intense, hurricanes are stronger, winters becoming bitterly cold, etc etc. All of this will happen with greater frequency.

All I can say about the heat is thank god for Air Conditioning. I'm not trying to start a global warming debate but a few hot days isn't a result of global warming. Now warm temperatures over a decade is another thing.

This wasn't caused by an overload, but rather a power line grounding out (must of been a hell of an arc) because of a tree too close to the wires(they tend to sag when there is a heavy demand placed on them.) This then caused a domino effect and out the lights went,

Do you have our levels of humidity though, thats where the AC is seriously needed. If its in the 30's and dry then usually is manageable (unfortunately here 30+ weather always comes with humidity).

And us in Toronto has virtually none. I think the last snowfall for us was in February and last November there was no snowfalls recorded in Southern Ontario which is unprecedented.

Thanks for taking the brunt of it this year

As for the cause of those snowfalls if you are going to get a lot of precipitation in the winter its gonna fall as snow, some seasons are dry and some are wet. Global warming can't be blamed for having a single snowy winter or a dry and mild one.

Where Global Warming becomes an issue is if these events become far more intense and frequent, increased energy (aka heat) man made or not will have the net effect of more intense weather as the planet has to do something with it.

We can use some of Seattle's rain here in Northeast Philly. All the lawns in my neighborhood, even the ones that are taken care of are turning brown.

As for this heat, I can't wait for winter. Oh wait.....for the first month and a half of winter, I'll be in Israel, where they wouldn't know what to do with some of the snowfalls we get here.

Anyways, this heat is too intense for me.

Yup, last year was quite hot for Seattle, it hit around 105-107 here for 3-4 days, and it was in high 90s for quite a few days. Last winter was pretty mild though, and there wasnt even a single snowfall near my home(compared to winter of 2008 when we were snowed in). Well, it has been weird weather since 2008 here.

103!!

You wanna come out here to Chester County? We're sitting at a nice and cool 102.

I work at an assisted living community, and around lunchtime I went to all the residents' rooms and checked their air conditioners and adjusted them when needed. Would you believe that one resident complained that it was too cold?!

It's about as hot as the inside of a blast furnace out there! 71-75 would suit me just fine!

Canada has been metric (well, partially metric) since the 1970's. I've got used to the volume units, and I find the length units downright convenient, especially for carpentry. But temperature units?

When it gets hot, 33C or 38C (as our opening poster translated) just don't sound very impressive.

"High '90's" or "Over 100" , or even "20 below zero" , are Fahrenheit phrases that still have real meaning for me.

I am realizing that my A/C definitely doesn't have enough BTUs to handle this heat wave for my size apartment. The poor thing was working its butt off from the time the timer turned it on until I shut it off this morning. Guess I'm going to have to get a bigger unit during the end-of-season sales at the end of this summer. In the interim, I'll just close off certain rooms to limit the amount of space it has to cool off...poor thing.

What is wierd is how cool it has been in Iraq this year. It normally gets in the 120s in May, and June-July 130s and Aug-Sept 140s, and this year it was still getting down in the 70s at night in June and we have only been in the 130s a few times. Every morning this month has been cool, and it is only getting up in the 110s. The weather has been awesome, and I love the dry heat.
Being from MS, I am used to 100F with 100% humidity, I will take a dry 130 any day of the week. The funny thing now, is when I go home in 3 weeks to MS with the temp and the humidity, it does not feel hot to me, but I sweat like a pig, which sucks. Nothing like walking from your house to your car, and your underwear gets soaked from sweating.

There are some parts of Hawaii where 86 would be considered a record high. High temperatures there usually range from about 77 to 82 or 83 year-round. That sounds quite ideal.

Heh, I'm going to Aruba in late October, and that the equivalent of putting Arizona on its own little island. It will be hot and dry there...

Even though temperatures in northern Europe can peak in the 90's, it usually doesn't stay that hot for very long. And when your average summer temperature is in the mid seventies, and the rest of the year is cold as hell, AC isn't really necessary.

Dunno how people in southern Europe survive without it, though.

Most of us in Seattle don't have air conditioning either. It doesn't often get hot enough for us to need it, and when it does, it doesn't last very long - we had a heat wave start yesterday, it'll peak today, and we'll cool down tomorrow as onshore flow begins. Also it does tend to be cool at night - yesterday at SeaTac the high was 90 and it got down to 64 at night. That's actually a pretty warm night for us.

That's our usual weather pattern. Last summer we had a crazy heat wave where it got to our highest temp ever - 103 at SEA. We really struggled with the prolonged extreme heat. I had never been so glad to have a/c in my life.
But that was when I ruled the world

Dude, I was in Chicago last week and it was only 88deg/f. Hey, no big deal right? In California, we laugh at 90deg + temps. Let me tell you that I was dying! The humidity which increases the "heat index" was killer!!! When it's humid, there's no way to cool off except with air conditioning because A/C de-humidifies the air.

Note the 35.5°C (95.9°F) temperature in the display.
I can handle 35.5deg/C but 95.9 deg/f, no way!
BTW...did your GF include factory A/C when purchasing her Golf? Or does she have the 65-2 system?

Meanwhile, it's been borderline cool here in dallas for the past week or so--in the high 80s, and lots of unseasonal rain (it's only about 1/3 through July, and we've already gotten more rain than the average rainfall during July)

Here is a pic I just made in my girly's Golf on the way back home from work:

I've found car thermometers to be somewhat unreliable. Usually any day of 90 degrees or so can give readings as high as 105 in the car.
Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?

Well, when I passed by the Central Station, the thermometre showed a temperature of 31°C in the shade. My guess is that temperatures are right now hovering between 35°C and 40°C here in HAM, with thunderstorms starting next week.

Now it's real fun in my room. I'm pretty much melting right now, even with open windows, because right now, temperature in my room is 31°C/88°F.

last week I was forced to buy a standalone aircon pack. The reason was that the days before I was on nightshift and during daytime I had 40°C in my bedroom (which is located in an insulated, converted attic beneath a black slate shingle roof). I simply couldn´t sleep and sucked at work.

Of course, an A/C is standard in all Golf VI models, she even has the premium "Climatronic" model and not the standard "Climatic" model. I have to say that her A/C is better than that thing in my Audi because it is cooling down the car much faster.

What's that?

I also looked at the thermometer in our living room when I arrived at home on Friday afternoon, it also showed 35.5°C.

Welcome to the club! We have reached 30°C in our living room. I have to drink my beer pretty quick because it is getting warm and undrinkable when it stays here longer than 30 minutes.

I was looking for A/Cs earlier today and I found a model for 375 EUR. Now we have to ask my girlfriend's father (who is an electrician) if he can install it here. When we get a "Yes" from him, I will order this thing immediately for our sleeping room!
