F1 2010: British Grand Prix

Mon Jul 05, 2010 5:46 pm

On to the 2010 Formula 1 Santander British Grand Prix
FRI 09 JUL - SUN 11 JUL

Nothing beats the atmosphere at Silverstone when a British driver takes to the circuit. In 2010 both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will be aiming to impress the loyal British fans at their home race and hoping to mount the steps of the Silverstone podium.

This Grand Prix promises to be really interesting!

HAMILTON: IF JENSON WANTS TO WIN SILVERSTONE, HE'LL HAVE TO BEAT ME!
As he reveals his aim to 'demolish the field' at Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton warns McLaren team-mate Jenson Button that if he wants to win the British GP, 'he has to do a better job than me'.

http://www.silverstone.co.uk/news/la...-Silverstone-hell-have-to-beat-me/

So... will Red Bull be able to take McLaren on their home grounds?
Will it be a McLaren 1-2?
How will the Saubers perform this time around? Will this coming race earn them more points?
How about Schumi... and Nico?... Ferrari? Renault? Lotus? HRT? Virgin Racing... and all the others...

Who will be the winner?

Football has taken over the news with the World Cup but let's not forget our Formula 1 drivers with their fabulous machines on wheels! Another exciting Grand Prix to look forward to!

I hope for fighting on the track, this time. I wonder if the new track is better or worse than before.

Thanks for opening the thread, Madame C!

The novelty this year concerns the layout, which has been modified between Abbey and Luffield Corner:

I'm not really sure why it's been modify and what are the advantages. They have insterted a very slow corner (called The Loop) and I hate slow corners

Why did they have to fiddle with another great track? I like Silverstone the way it was.

Me too! I understand that some circuits need to modify their layout for security reasons (like in Le Mans or in Spa), but here I don't get it.

I believe the layout change was forced by MotoGP. I think the original intention was to run the race on the original track leaving the new arena layout for MotoGP. But someone, probably Bernie and BRDC came to the conclusion that the new Arena layout would be better for the F1 show.

The FIM did the same in Le Mans, when they modified the turn of the Virage de la Chapelle as it was not ideal for the bikes. So, instead of a straight line with a sharp turn on the right, they built a curve. And it's still difficult for me, 8 years after, to accept it

So it's not something that can be converted back to suit cars?

Nope, they have removed the old layout.

What annoys me the most is that you're not close to the track anymore. As usual, they are putting spectators farther and farther...

Good for him, there wasn't really any other sensible option. If they continue the work and cooperation the results can be fruitful.

End of practice 2 A lot of cars going off track and on the grass, spins, cross winds, mechanical problems not counting on the speed and the Gs on the drivers bodies. The Red Bulls and Ferraris performed well in this session.
Wondering if the upgrades on the McLarens are really going to be working.
This is practice, there is still one more tomorrow and then Qualifyings so let's see what tomorrow brings. The teams will be working on the cars for the rest of the day and during the night as well.

He was just the worse. However, the HRT car is so slow, he's only like to take either A) his team mate or a Vrigin car, or B) the leader when being lapped.

Interesting qualifying, Seb beat Webber with what was apparently a newer and quicker front wing, though he was still just fractions ahead. These two guys are absolutely dead even on raw pace, it's a couple hundredths here or there and they're probably the most evenly matched pairing on the grid. I just hope Webber has better luck in the race tomorrow and nails his start..

Not great for the McLaren boys, although Hamilton is only a whisker behind Alonso. The much lauded 'update package' looks like it needs a lot more work. I think Hamilton can get some solid points from 4th, but Button is going to have a very hard job to pick up more than one or two points from 14th on the grid.

By some accounts that wing is worth about 1/10 sec, add that to Vettel's time and subtract from Webber's and the front row would be different.

Luck is not what Webber needs, fair and equitable treatment from his team is what is really required. A commenter on another site made mention of the "Austrian Mafia at RB", It certainly is starting to look like that is where the strings are being pulled. More and more Horner is looking like just the puppet for Marko et al!

Seb beat Webber with what was apparently a newer and quicker front wing, though he was still just fractions ahead.

It's turning in to a bit of a row. Apparently RBR removed the new spec wing from Webbers car after Vettel broke his. This was, apparently, because of Vettels championship position. Yet RBR deny favouritism.
I think that using the championship as a reason, especially when there is only 12 points between the drivers, is very thin. I can understand if one driver was languishing down in the bottom end of the championship that you would show favouritism, even the drivers would understand that, but when they're so close, you can't maintain a policy of equal treatment and do things like that.

The more I think about it, the more annoyed I am. Webber's comment in the press conference was perhaps very telling... "The team got the result they wanted". I guess I don't have a personal problem with Vettel other than generally disliking him with his finger waving antics and childish ways, but I'm starting to really dislike the brain trust at RBR and I'm hoping more and more that Mark finds a way to win the title this season to prove to them how foolish they've been acting. Anyway, he's signed a contract for another year and the car is his best and perhaps only chance to win races and challenge for the WDC, so I hope they can find a better way to integrate the drivers fairly without an Alonso/Hamilton or Prost/Senna sort of falling out.

Allright folks, 5 minutes to race time... on the new-looking Silverstone track!

Two Red Bulls, a Ferrari, Hammy and his McLaren and Nico with his Mercedes, not forgetting the rest of the grid.
Just being a F1 driver is a feat! They are all great drivers!!!

I am really looking forward to this race while I have an upcoming thunderstorm in the background.

It's go for a round-the-track!!!!

Vettel had a puncture and went off... It's chaos....

Did I just see Alonso go off track to overtake Kubica?...If we don't hear something about that later...

FIA will be back.

The F1 feed happens to say...

"Lap 18/52 a question mark hangs over Alonso's pass on Kubica - did the Spaniard gain an advantage by running off-track, or did he have no choice, given that Kubica appeared to give him no room?"

My answer is.... I don't think it matters....25 second penalty or a drive through...ask Lewis Hamilton

Vettel struggling, I am sure the team will highlight some McLaren inflicted damage but it looks to me that Seb has a serious case of the sulks.
His attempt to intimidate his team mate at the start backfired so he has spat the dummy!!

Racing incident....If Red Bull play the blame game, they'll just be whining as bad as Nando.

I'll happily admit i had a smile of smug satisfaction, from seeing how Seb has gone so far

Alonso should have let Kubica get his place back and then attack him again ... I haven't seen the "under investigation" announcement yet?

ooops, there it is, and Alonso got the drive through. Correct penalty given, but I'm sure you FIA scandal lovers are dissapointed since there is no debate now  Wink

now, with the penalty given ... was Alonso forced out by Kubica?

as long as he gives his place back for AT LEAST 1 corner

Things just went from bad to worse for Alonso..he hasn't taken his Drive through yet....he's going to be at the back of the snake.

I know, but Alonso was much faster, and he could have been attacking him again in no time.
SC on the track .... watch out Hamilton, you have to stay BEHIND the SC, not overtake him Big grin
