Do The Israelis Not Trust The Secret Service?

Wed Jul 07, 2010 8:00 am

After reading an article in another threat on 4 guns belonging to Netyanyahu's security detail being lost/stolen, it led me to wonder: isn't the Secret Service detailed to protect foreign dignitaries when they're visiting here? Is the Secret Service not the best in the world when it comes to that kind of security? If Netanyahu is going to be recieving Secret Service protection, why the need for extra members of his own security? Do they not think we're good enough?
Yes, I'd like to see airbus go under so Boeing can have their customers!

I don't honestly know, but I'd say national pride comes into it. Also, if anything were to happen to that dignitary, it would be a little embarrassing to have the blame placed at the foot of the Secret Service. Better to shove the blame elsewhere in such situations.

No, they've failed 4 times. The Secret Service is probably the best in the world, in the USA.

Actually they have failed once. The Secret Service didn't oversee the Presidents protection until after William McKinley was assassinated. JFK was the only president that was killed. Of course there was the Ronald Reagan shooting, as well as an attempt on Gerry Ford, and IIRC there was a grenade thrown on the stage where George W. Bush was speaking in Tbilisi Georgia
Nice Trip Report!!! Great Pics, thanks for posting!!!! B747Forever

Ask yourself this question: when POTUS travels, does he rely on the host nation's security forces or does he use the USSS? Heads of state will usually bring some of their own folks along. I don't think it has anything to do with trust, at least not when allies visit the US.

I also think that it is not the USSS that protects visiting heads of state or dignataries, but the Diplomatic Security Service (or something like that).

I would think that any foreign dignitary would want their own security in the 'inner sanctum'. The last thing they'd want is a Secret Service agent, or any other security force of a foreign nation, eves dropping.

Indeed. Many years ago when Bush I was visiting Canada, he & then PM Mulroney went to a ball game at the SkyDome. You may recall the event as thousands of people were yelling "Tuna, tuna!" at Mulroney over a scandal involving the sale of tainted tuna fish. Anyhoo, night before I was in a bar in TO and ran into the RCMP security guard for Mulroney, who were not on duty that night. Turns out one was the younger brother of a guy I worked for in the RCMP as an undergrad many moons earlier. So we yacked for a few minutes.

USSS guys were at the table, too, but I can't recall any of them uttering a peep. Just sucked back some good beer.

Why should the Israelis trust the Secret Service?

Like everything in the current U.S. administration, absolutely everything is politicized, no doubt including the Secret Service... and given this adminstration's demonstrated attitude toward Israel and Netanyahu's "audacity" to defend his nation against its proven mortal enemies, it would be foolish on their part to place their trust entirely in the Secret Service for their security while on U.S. soil.
